my first backpacking trip
I just completed my first backpacking trip ever to south dakota in the Black Hills, it was awesome and i cant wait to go again. I went with my youth group from church and we backpacked for 6 days and climbed Harney peak, just wondering if anyone else has hiked this trail and what they thought of it.

Not yet, but glad to see you posting here. Was this outside the town of Trolltown? I am thinking about trying that one later this year.

Congratulations on your first trip! It took me a few years to try to do anything more than a weekend. 6 days is cool!

My first time was in my GF's parents bed. I think she was making a statement.

Congratulations. I have been to Harney Peak. The Black Hills are awsome, I love backpacking at Wind Cave as well. And it's all centered around my favorite bar in the world, the Old Style Saloon No. 10 in Deadwood. Man I love the hills!

Honestly, you didn't think anyone on this board (short of the occasional troll) would not like backpacking?

Anywhoo, congrats on your trip, welcome aboard, and...um...please check your sanity at the door...

The Black Hills Rocks! It's my favorite place to hike. I've been up to Harney Peak 4 times.
I'm planning to go out there again next Fall.

I was up to Harney Peak in 2000. Great hike from Sylvan Lake.

So where were you hiking that you got six days in? The Black Hills trails aren't that long... were you doing Centennial Trail and offshoots from it?

I've done an overnight trip at Wind Cave. Love that area! And the French Creek Natural Area at Custer State Park is still on the list.

Would like to do more in the Badlands, too. And get off and perhaps find some hiking trails on the reservation or BLM land. I guess there's a new trail, something around 9 miles, I think, near Wall.

Am debating a trip out there, yet again, over Labor Day. hmmmmm...

So where'd ya go? and CONGRATS!! Are you from the Midwest?

Congratulations! Your first backpacking trip and it was with young people! You are truly brave, so you have passed our trolltesting invention, PhantomSoul's question notwithstanding. He would love to backpack with a passel of kids for 6 days too, I'm sure.

Anyway, welcome and don't expect too much from us, 'kay? We are all somewhat short of a royal flush. A few don't flush at all. Especially watch that Pennsy fellow.

Okay so the troll remark was by Wounded Knee, not PhantomSoul. It was one of those guys that I just met, at least I had that much right. Back to making my coffee!

Well, answering a few questions, i'm a 15 year old boy from IL and because I went on this backpacking trip with my youth group and there were a bunch of out of shape people and girls with us, we didnt hike much. We started off at Sylvan lake and hiked to horsethief lake and a few other places along the trail. Our last day we hiked a mile up Harney peak and then back to Sylvan Lake; we really did more camping along the trails than backpacking, but it was still fun.

No, No, No, You Missed the Point!
Sarcasm never comes out the right way on the boards, does it? I wasn't talking about anybody specifically being a troll...

Ugh, just forget it. As you were...
