Jump to Page |  1 | 2   | 3   |  next >> I've done it now. “I've registered as a member of the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Peloton Project. Now I get to ask all of you to consider making a donation in support of the Lance Armstrong Foundation. I've committed to a Century Ride on the weekend of Oct 15-17, and have till then to train and get ready. If you want to make an online donation go here Dr. Vann Schaffner, Peloton Project Member For a check donation (must be in by 8/27!): Make checks payable to LAF or Lance Armstrong Foundation. Donors should mail their check, with the sponsor ticket enclosed (preferably NOT stapled), directly to the Lock Box address provided on the ticket. The donor must include your name in the memo portion of his/her check. You can download the sponsor ticket from the website. Please fill in my name Vann Schaffner and member number 200155293 on the sponsor ticket. What's it all about? As a member of the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s Peloton Project, I am raising funds and awareness for the Foundation and their mission of enhancing the quality of life for those living with, through, and beyond cancer. Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist, Lance Armstrong, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) seeks to promote the optimal physical, psychological, and social recovery and care of cancer survivors. In the United States alone it is estimated that there are more than 9 million cancer survivors, and it is estimated half of those diagnosed this year will live their normal life span. In 2003 it is anticipated that more than 1.2 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed. More than one out of every three Americans will eventually have cancer - that’s one in every two men and one in every three women. The odds of cancer affecting you or a loved one are not that improbable. The LAF is working to identify and improve cancer survivor services and facilitate the delivery of those services—and a large dose of hope—to the patients, their families, and other loved ones touched by the disease. The money you donate to the Peloton Project will help the LAF continue to aid those affected by cancer through programs, advocacy, research and survivorship support. Fulfilling the many needs of cancer survivors is a tall order, but an organization that bears the name of the man who came back from cancer to win five consecutive Tour de France victories can aim for nothing less. Your donation will have far reaching affects for those living with cancer and the future of cancer survivorship. Now, I am asking you to join me as I help the Lance Armstrong Foundation in their efforts to improve the lives of cancer survivors. If you have any questions, please contact me at vann@schaffnerfamily.com or the Lance Armstrong Foundation at (512) 236-8820, or visit the LAF website at www.laf.org, to find out more about the Foundation and the great cause your donation supports. On behalf of all those whose lives are affected by cancer, I thank you for your support – with your donation we can make a positive impact on the lives of all cancer survivors. Thanks!!! Vann was from my Great Grandfathers nickname. His last name was Van Meter, got called Van, my Mom changed it to Vann. PS Thanks lyrca!” 2:38:48 PM 7/29/04 “i know it, i was just busting on you b/c you said people always mistake that for part of your last name. moo haa haa!” 2:42:23 PM 7/29/04 “Hey, it could happen, my grandfather's actual first name was "Doctor"...” 2:52:30 PM 7/29/04 “Gesundheit.” 4:42:27 PM 7/29/04 “Doctor Bitpusher? That is strange!” 5:08:08 PM 7/29/04 9:58:32 PM 7/29/04 “Will people ignore me if I keep bouncing this up? "Today, there are nearly ten million people living with cancer. Decades of investment in research are paying off - more and more people are winning the battle against cancer. It's time to deal with the issues they face. The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) sponsors national advocacy initiatives to help the voice of the cancer community be heard in Washington. By educating lawmakers and the public, LAF helps raise awareness about the health policy issues facing people living with cancer and their loved ones." ” 7:09:24 AM 7/30/04 7:10:51 AM 7/30/04 bump “Make the checks to: Herr Doktor VannSchaffner” 11:42:57 AM 7/30/04 “Thanks Chuck!!!” 11:48:41 AM 7/30/04 “I just sent emails to everybody on my list. some TT'ers are on it, so forgive the duplication.” 12:02:16 AM 8/01/04 3:28:15 PM 8/01/04 “Emails that I sent out aren't working well. :( It looks like virus software picks up on too many addresses. Several TT'ers should be proud of their protection! Peloton Project.” 6:47:48 AM 8/02/04 “It appears I've been labeled a spammer. Email addresses that I know are good, are rejecting me. :(” 7:14:09 AM 8/02/04 “The Ride for the Roses has been cancelled, I'm still going to work on the Peloton Project. Dear Peloton Members: The 2004 Run for the Roses, originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 16, during Ride for the Roses Weekend, has unfortunately been cancelled due to road closure problems and difficulties obtaining permits. In place of this event, we will host a cancer awareness and bicycle safety event for families and children at Auditorium Shores, right across from the PowerBar Health & Sports Expo! This event will be free of charge and open to all Peloton members, as well as the Austin community. We will send more details about the event as they are finalized. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this schedule change may cause, but we look forward to offering a new, family-oriented event during Ride Weekend. If you have any questions regarding this schedule change, please contact Peloton@laf.org. Will wait and see if I still want to go to Austin. Maybe they can use a pathologist at the fair.” 2:21:46 PM 8/02/04 “In my best Rosanne Rosannadana voice-Nevermind. It It seems it is the RUN not the RIDE that is cancelled. Maybe.” 3:21:17 PM 8/02/04 “pathiepooh, I got your email and I will read it tonight I promise. I was like who the heck is this clown. took me a min to put it together.” 4:03:13 PM 8/02/04 11:48:02 PM 8/02/04 11:50:45 PM 8/02/04 1:57:56 PM 8/03/04 “Should I be offended? My donations to date include only people that I met online, and only one F2F. Many good friends and collegues haven't donated a penny. I keep messing with my website. If you haven't looked i a while, let me know what you thinkPeloton Project I am presenting at Cancer Conference today. Seems like I could make nice Peloton Project slide to slip in.” 7:23:54 AM 8/04/04 “The conference worked pretty good. Hard for a bunch of people who take care of cancer patients not to be interested. Tomorrow there is a free noon concert on the plaza. hmm.....” 6:49:42 AM 8/05/04 “Today's bad news. about 6 new cases of cancer about as many with a history of cancer 10 or 15 with precancerous lesions. http://www.schaffnerfamily.com/vannspelotonproject.htm">The Lance Armstrong Foundation believes that in your battle with cancer, knowledge is power and attitude is everything. From the moment of diagnosis, we provide the practical information and tools you need to live strong.” 8:55:33 PM 8/05/04 8:56:29 PM 8/05/04 8:57:27 PM 8/05/04 “So today I passed out about a 100 flyers during the free lunch concert on the HSC plaza. Holy Moly, I think the most beautiful women on the planet were out there and the Big Band music had them in a good mood. Then on the way home I got about 30 sec on the local 50,000 watt am radio station to make a plug. Time will tell if either did any good. My Peloton Page” 9:59:37 PM 8/06/04 “A long time very good friend and colleague put me over the amount needed to be eligible to be one of the 100 Peloton Project members riding in the Tour of Hope Finale, Recreation Ride Sat, October 9. I registered so I wouldn't lose the spot, now I have to talk my way into getting the weekend off call. I have already asked for the weekend before and the weekend after. I'll also need 10/8 off to travel or travel late at night. If I can swing this, and my coach doesn't nix doing the ride only one week before the Ride for the Roses, it's press release time. :D My Peloton Project Page” 3:24:23 PM 8/08/04 “From reading Chris Carmicheal's book, the DC ride would be fine for me as long as I take it easy, not too serious, even though only a week prior to the Century. My Peloton Project Page, Added a Web Log Link!” 1:24:22 PM 8/09/04 “I've never realized before what a great PR scheme a benefit event is! The number of donations I get is dwarfed by the value of the flyers and PR work I am doing for the LAF. My Peloton Page” 9:37:27 AM 8/10/04 “a DC ride, cool! if you do that, you know there'll be a TT contingent to cheer you on. :-)” 10:14:19 AM 8/10/04 “My bike will match perfectly for the Tour of Hope. Their bikes are yellow and the accents are blue. My bike is a similar blue, I need to re wrap my handlebars, I'll make em yellow. ;-)” 12:08:42 PM 8/10/04 “Just got a cool email from one of my flyers: Hello Van, I don't know if you'll remember me but we met this weekend at the park on constitution between Girard and Carlisle. I thought I'd send you a note to let you know that I find what you're doing to be a very honorable thing. I was born and raised in Kenya (East Africa) and came here in 1995 as a naive 19 year old girl. I have lost several family members who were all very close and dear to me to cancer and when they were ailing I felt very helpless. I have often wondered what I can do to make a difference or a contribution in some way to finding a cure. Hopefully with people doing the work that you're doing people will not feel as lost and helpless as my family did. I will be making a CC contribution online it wont be much but I hope it makes a difference in finding a breakthrough for this scourge that has affected millions. If you need assistance in other areas such as passing flyers or anything else please let me know. My PCS is listed below and I can meet you to help in whatever way I can. Otherwise I wish you the very best of luck and may you be blessed in this endeavor. Please keep in touch and let me know how things are going.” 1:09:43 PM 8/10/04 “Thanks SG!” 8:30:28 AM 8/11/04 “You're welcome, Pathman!” 8:53:04 AM 8/11/04 “Looks like the DC ride may be a real possibility. My division chief is on vacation, but I think she'll approve it if at all possible. Training is going well according the Carmicheal Training System. I worry about having enough speed, but the online coach believes my goal of 100miles/5-6 hours is realistic. I also need some practice riding in a large group. All donations so far have come from friend and colleagues. I haven't checked, but online friend probably rival the others in number of donations. May have recruited another to the Peloton Project yesterday, from the nature of her questions. My Peloton Project Page” 8:45:37 AM 8/14/04 “Signed up for this, too. A Conversation with Lance - Hosted by Ann Curry presented by Wells Fargo 8:00pm - 9:30pm The Lance Armstrong Foundation invites Peloton Project members and the general public to "A Conversation with Lance - Hosted by Ann Curry", an educational event focused on cancer survivorship. The event which is sponsored by Wells Fargo, will take place on Saturday, October 16, from 8:00-9:30 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center with doors opening at 7:00 p.m. The first annual Junior Spirit of Survivorship Carpe Diem Award will also be presented during the event to a young person living with cancer who has demonstrated a resilient attitude toward his or her cancer diagnosis and inspired others to live strong. Lance Armstrong Foundation” 8:52:06 AM 8/14/04 $5 short of $1,000 in donations 2:08:44 PM 8/19/04 “Good job Vann, I just might have to head over that way and cheer you on.” 2:33:26 PM 8/19/04 Over the $1000 limit! “Fellow warriers in the cancer war put me over. 50 Level Accomplished 100 Level Accomplished 500 Level Accomplished 1000 Level Accomplished White Jersey Team $1,485.00 Green Jersey Team $3,985.00 Polka Dot Jersey Team $8,985.00 Yellow Jersey Team $18,985.00 White Jersey gets me a Jersey.
