Arkansas Backpacking

“everyone knows that there is NO good backpacking in Arkansas...especially in the summer months...wait till late October, then there will be good backpacking in Arkansas...until then...float ON!”

“True it can be hot and there are bugs in Arkansas, but if you think there are no good backing in Arkansas in the summer you dont know chit!”

“I went on a BP trip along the Buffalo River last September and only ended up with 30 or 40 chigger bites. They felt Sooooooooo good to scratch!”

“Hell, I don't even want to mow my yard when it's this time of year much less strap on a backpack.”

“I just got back from canoeing the Buffalo River. That's the way to backcountry Arkansas this time of year. The river is getting low, but there's lots of good swimming and gravel bar camping. Bugs weren't bad but I did pick up a tick hiking along the top of one of the bluffs. The rivers will be really low next month.

I've backpacked near Ponca in March. There are good trails so you can avoid some ticks. This week I paddled through a place on the Buffalo called Woolum that had trails going through it. There were some great swimming holes, bluffs and gravel bars there. One trail lead to a cool knife-edge ridge. It would be worth visiting.”
