Alan Keyes: Your Next Congressman?View MessagesAnd this is not hyprocritical? “Why is it that the Republicans feel the ned to run an out of state person against Barack Obama? Is this part of the "Yes, We have a lot of work to do" part of the Bushs speech to the Urban League here in Detroit; run a outta state lackey just cause he's black? Give me a break. Keyes himself in the past has poo-poo'd this type move, now he runs? Are ALL Republicans this shallow? Do they feel that by putting up Keyes, it's going to change the way blacks view them? Here's a local story from www.wdiv.com: Keyes Agrees To Run For U.S. Senate Maryland Resident To Seek Illinois Seat UPDATED: 4:52 PM EDT August 8, 2004 ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Former presidential candidate Alan Keyes has formally announced his run as Illinois Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. Keyes made his announcement Sunday afternoon in Arlington Heights. He'll replace former Republican nominee Jack Ryan, who quit the race in late June amid embarrassing sex club allegations in his divorce records. Keyes will face Democratic rising star Barack Obama, and his entry sets up the first U.S. Senate election with two black candidates representing the major parties. State Republican leaders asked Keyes -- a political commentator who has never lived in Illinois -- to be the party's nominee last week after nearly six weeks of searching for a candidate. In the past, Keyes has been critical of candidates parachuting into a state they don't live in to run for office. Keyes has until Election Day to establish residency in Illinois, according to federal law. I guess there should be one law that should be changed. How do the people of this state feel aboutu an outta state person coming to represent them? PS - Please save the Hillary crap. She at least moved into the area that she was running for. Keyes doesn't even have a home in the state, for crying out loud.” 8:24:04 PM 8/08/04 “Hey Q! The Democratic Party in Michigan is so confused that it didn't run a legitimate candidate in the 7th Congressional District. One candidate lived in Oakland County. Another moved to Battle Creek from New York. The winner was the only candidate who actually was a legitimate resident, but she's not very good. I'm just appalled that someone from Metro Detroit had the gall to come out here and run. "We'll teach those country people how to run things, eh?" But from what I've read, Keyes is actually quite representative of the faction that controls the Republican Party in Illinois. One funny thing from Tuesday's election, though. The dividing line between Michigan's 7th and 8th Districts separates Athens Township from the village of Athens in Calhoun County. Unfortunately, the people who run the elections in the area did not realize this. They sent voter cards with "7th" on them to both the village and Township after redistricting two years ago. They all voted in the 7th and their votes counted. Congressman Fred Upton was campaigning in the area last week and realized that hundreds of voters didn't realize they actually lived in the 8th District that he represents. So, two days before the election, the local officials and all the voters had to scramble and change districts. Who needs Florida?” 8:39:38 PM 8/08/04 “And if they lose they'll start a recall.” 9:24:34 PM 8/08/04 “Interesting, RL. I encountered something similar to the FUBAR you listed whiel doing work for the Washtenaw Dems a few weeks ago. From what I gathered, the washties caught over ridden on a cavassing opp, because someone in the district (Ann Arbor) did let them know that they had a massive "get teh vote out" canvassing situation going on, which drained all of the Washties *resources*. Trouble is, sometimes in this day and age of electoral votes, the out lining areas get left out because of the lack of popluation consentration. I know reading my stuff right now, to you as an english teacher has got ya pulling yer hair out, but bare with me! It's my feeling that the people should be represented by people of the area, not outsiders. A scramble to run someone against someone from another party jst might be politics, but I jst don't agree wit it, no matter what level we're talking about. The good from all of this, is that I see a very good and tasty opportunity for someone with half a brain to get involved, and really be able to make a difference, if not for the party, maybe for *another party*. What I mean is that I'm seriously concidering getting involved in something political. I'd like to get to know the in's and outs and see just how these machines work from the inside. I hope, and remember - this all a *pie in the sky* thing - to be able to use this info to better the party I join, or be able to be there when the third party comes about. Long shot I know, but what the hell else am I doing? LOL! PS - gppd to see ya gioving some great info out here. It's a real break from the same old stuff. I'm in the 12th district. Keep us informed on how things are *swingin'* out there!” 9:38:23 PM 8/08/04 “Thank you! Thank you! No one, not even the great ICE TEA can butcher this like I can. It's late, and I'm on the tail end of a World Civ paper on the rise of the Roman Empire. That's my story and I'm keeping to it. Did someone say "Carthaginians:......!” 9:41:32 PM 8/08/04 “Don't they have some sort of residency requirements in Illinois?” 10:33:39 PM 8/08/04 “At least Keyes is intelligent. I disagree with his stances on the issues, but the guy has an actual brain, unlike GWB who has NO INTELLIGENCE WHATSOEVER. If people vote for Keyes, based on his leadership, and platform, I can respect that. If people vote for GWB based on his leadership and record, I have no respect for that voter.” 10:39:29 PM 8/08/04 Tilt “The question has been addressed on local and national news. The UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION only requires that the person have residency in the State by election day. So all of us TTers could run in each other's State, as long as we had a residence in the state that we were running. (Sorry for the confolution--a day with the inlaws in the sun and only iced tea to drink.” 11:40:21 PM 8/08/04 “I think you might have to live in the state longer to be able to Vote.” 11:49:04 PM 8/08/04 “Remember all the crap that the right threw at Hillary when she ran for the Senate in NY....I guess it's OK when it suits their purpose.....or it's just another example of the hypocrisy of the Right wing?” 11:50:48 PM 8/08/04 “I'm still trying to figure out how someone living in Washington DC can move NORTH to New York and be referred to as a 'carpetbagger', LOL” 11:54:43 PM 8/08/04 “The example of Hilary Clinton moving to New York and running for the senate is a big reason why I say, "Go for it, Allen". There is no way he will beat Obama anyway. It's actually good for there to be at least two candidates for each position.” 3:08:43 AM 8/09/04 “I agree with Dunadan. Obama is a self admitted crack head who has taken some extreme liberal positions in the Illinois Senate. An out-of-state Keyes is far better than an in-state Obama, and I am voting for Keyes.” 5:06:14 AM 8/09/04 Flip Flopper ““I deeply resent the destruction of federalism represented by Hillary Clinton's willingness to go into a state she doesn't even live in and pretend to represent people there, so I certainly wouldn't imitate it.” -- Alan Keyes, March 17, 2000 on Fox News” 7:07:15 AM 8/09/04 “... and prosecutor, that's self admitted former crack head. Mighty funny criticism coming from someone who worships a former coke head who's been evasive and deceptive about his "youthful indiscretions". I guess your hang up is his honesty about his past errors?” 7:10:37 AM 8/09/04 “Flipper, faster than lightning” 7:13:37 AM 8/09/04 “If people vote for GWB based on his leadership and record, I have no respect for that voter Gee, I guess I better vote for whoever Buddha Bear says to, because I can't live without his respect. In other words, don't be such an asshat. You don't have intellectual or moral authority to toss around, so spare us your faux righteous indignation.” 10:00:33 AM 8/09/04 “I wonder why "carpetbagger" has won the race against "scalawag" for the title of insult du jour? Personally, I like "scalawag" better. But, in terms of Alan Keyes, I think the correct word is "dope" or maybe "stooge."” 10:00:40 AM 8/09/04 “None of the Illinois Republicans wanted to tangle with Obama, so they invited a black guy from another state to come in and run. Carpetbagger or tool?” 10:03:14 AM 8/09/04 “Mike Ditka may be a meathead, but he had enough sense to say no. I think Keyes is just a publicity hound. Win or lose, he gets his name in the media. reformed lurker, I think "lackey" is also fitting.” 10:06:23 AM 8/09/04 “Keyes also has a history of paying himself from his campaign funds. One of the big holdups on his acceptance was whether the Republicans would fund him. So, what he's probably thinking is this: "Will there be enough in there to pay me?" Anyone who believes this is a serious candidacy should get a tape of Sunday's "Meet the Press." Dennis Hastert's eyes rolled and he laughed a nervous laugh when asked about Keyes. I think there was room for a legitimate candidate who would say "I know I can't win, but here's the Republican case." As the conservatives say, competition creates value.” 10:20:14 AM 8/09/04 “Think of Pat Buchanan, who hasn't worked a day in decades. He is the eternal candidate who makes a nice living with his mouth. Hmmmmm, kinda like a ho'.” 10:23:07 AM 8/09/04 “Wear your grudge like a crown of negativity. Calculate what we will or will not tolerate. Desperate to control all and everything. Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen. Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down. Justify denials and grip it to the lonesome end. Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down. Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell. Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled agaiiiiin.” 10:33:52 AM 8/09/04 “You're quite a poet, Nigal.” 10:36:31 AM 8/09/04 “The Hilary machine got the rules changed so that she could do it in New York. The Republicans howled but it did them no good. So I guess they decide since it was already legal in Illinois, they might as well do it too. Seems like carpet bagging to me but Since I can't vote in either New York or Illinois, I guess I'll just sit back an watch. What I really wonder though is How can any of you supporters of Ms. Clinton complain about this one?” 11:03:57 AM 8/09/04 “Me too.....just sit back and watch......and laugh.” 11:15:28 AM 8/09/04 NoProb “It is not only legal in Illinois, but in every part of the USA. The US Constitution says. as I stated above. the candidate only has to have established residence in said state by ELECTION DAY. So chili, matt, snow, et.al. could all run for senate in your state, as long as they had established residence by election day. In some states, that only requires a letter postmarked and delivered to claimed address. Utility bills are really influencial. If Keyes does not establish residence 30 days before the election, he just can't vote in Illinois.” 11:23:53 AM 8/09/04 “As I said, it's ok with me. I don't have a dog in this hunt. But it seems that if someone feels that Hilary running in New York is ok, there shouldn't be a complaint about Keyes in Illinois.” 11:32:02 AM 8/09/04 “Complaint?? No Comment? Yes The Repubs can run a striped ape for all I care.” 11:35:24 AM 8/09/04 “Why would Barack Obama complain about running against Keyes? I'd think he'd get down on his knees and say, "Thank you Jesus!"” 11:37:15 AM 8/09/04 “Hey really Geo, Obama has ideas and Keyes has a bunch of old tired '80s rhetoric.” 11:38:55 AM 8/09/04 “The fact that Hilary Clinton is the Senator from New York is a joke, too. In fact, she should have run in Illinois. I think she grew up there. Cubs fan. But I'm from the state with the Canadian governor, so what do I know?” 7:35:52 PM 8/09/04 “Seeing as though the states run the election, it would be up to them to change the rules that cover this. I also remember Dick Chaney having to do something to set up residency as well before he ran for VP. I would have to respectfully disagrees with ChicagoMark on his point that the Constitution sets teh residency rules. I believe that would infringe on states rights, as the Federal government cannot tell a state what to so in this instance. I could be wrong, and I am many times a day, but remember just because it's on the tube, doesn't always make it true. Let me see what I can dig up.” 7:52:36 PM 8/09/04 “Still looking, I see teh same AP wire story in a lot of pubications. But I found this as well: "....Keyes told Republican leaders he would turn to his national base of supporters, as well as to national party leaders, for financial help. Keyes still owes $524,169 from his two presidential bids, according to federal elections records. He also owes $7,481 in unpaid state income taxes in his home state of Maryland, according to court records....." Interesting - this is from the Las Vegas Sun - http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/bw-elect/2004/aug/08/080801331.html” 8:02:03 PM 8/09/04 “Can a candidate use the proceeds from a current campaign to pay off debts in a prior campaign? Another question: Is there some type of legal entity that a candidate can create so that he/she is not personally liable for the campaign debts?” 8:12:57 PM 8/09/04 “Well, I stand corrected. It would appear that Article 1 section 3 states that he just has to be a resident by election day, or so sayth the Illinois election division. That needs to be changed. :)” 8:14:16 PM 8/09/04 “I wouldn't think on both of your questions. The requirements for running for office pertain to an individual. I don't think a PAC or another entity could qualify under these types of rules. I would think that the party would help him with some of those debts, maybe this is the payoff? However, he's run so many times and racked up such a huge debts I can't believe they're going to let him run again.” 8:18:42 PM 8/09/04 “Who said Hillary was a carpet bagger? I believe the correct term used was carpet muncher.” 9:06:21 PM 8/09/04 “This will be Alan Keyes speech. "I have been blacker longer than Barak Obama, and I don't have a funny name. Vote for me." Thankyou, thankyou.” 9:52:03 PM 8/09/04 “Don't be an idiot. If there is one thing you can say about Alan Keyes is he is a great orator.” 10:20:04 PM 8/09/04 “Sorry Deodorant. I meant to put that in the sarcasm font.” 10:23:30 PM 8/09/04 “Every time I hear or see Alan Keyes, I get a vague notion of Jon Lovitz as a black man.” 11:05:32 PM 8/09/04 “Oh, and Jon Lovitz is a great orator.” 11:10:30 PM 8/09/04 “Allen Keys is a great man and has basically thrown down the gauntlet as far as his skeletons. He is above reproach. I would have voted for him in a heartbeat were he nominated. Let's hope Illinois gets the great opportunity to have him as a representative of their state. The fact he's carpetbagging to do it of little import because Hillary made that acceptable.” 7:48:59 AM 8/10/04 “Hillary mde carpet munching acceptable? I was munching carpet before I even heard of her. Alan Keyes is a great man? He's nothin' but a mouth.” 8:16:54 AM 8/10/04 “It's when a man's actions match what comes out of his mouth that shows a man's true nature Tom. He walks his talk. I have been on his media watch list for some time now so I know a bit about his views and character.” 8:19:48 AM 8/10/04 “ACTING! GENIUS! THANK-YOU!!” 8:34:29 AM 8/10/04 “I guess the fact that he denouced exactly what he's doing is what makes him a great man. What a joke. If he was a great dood, he'd be in office right now, instead of cleaning one. Typical "He's great if he's a Republican" lock step move.” 10:22:12 AM 8/10/04 “Keyes?? Action?? Has he done any legislative or executive work? Does he advocate for the ruling class like most other Republicans? Maybe Keyes oversees a large philanthropic trust that helps poor children with health and education.” 10:29:06 AM 8/10/04 “You think y'all got problems??????? The Great Senator, Hatch, from the Great State of Utah, wants (wanted?) to give the citizens of DC the Right to Carry Firearms. I'm just happy to live in an occupied territory where any elected idiot from Timbuktu can pass legislation effecting me. Thank you. Rant switch "off".” 10:37:28 AM 8/10/04
