I lost my Swiss Army Knife that I had had for 20 years or so when we went to Mexico 2 years ago. I figured I had just left it in a drawer or something. So BowlderGal got me a new one for my birthday. Well, I dropped her off at the airport a little while ago, and she just called - airport security just found it in the carry-on suitcase she took along! But it's theirs now. Oh well....

BoulderMan, I had a similar experience a few years ago. My baby Swiss Army knife went missing for over a year, then turned up in the pocket of an overnight bag. Luckily, I was the one who found it.

Sorry about yours mon.

Couldn't they put it to the side and let you retrieve it? If not, that's stupid!

1995 or so
In Fairbanks, my wife forgot about the bear protection ammo she had in her purse when she went to pick up visiting friends at the airport. 12 gauge, 00 and slugs. "Mam, do you have any ammo in your purse?"

Nah, they find way too much stuff, and it would make the security process take even longer. The one I have now is a better knife, and the old one was given to me by an old girlfriend, so has no sentimental value, so it's OK.

I saw on tv one time that airport security sales off the stuff they confiscate on E-bay but I can't figure out how to search for it on their site. Maybe if you figure it out you can buy it back cut rate.

I had to give up pepper spray once crossing into Canada. I could have mailed it home, or picked it up on my way back. Since I wasn't returning that way, I let them dispose of it.

I lost a Leatherman Micra one time at security in an airport. Ot was tucked deep down in a hidden side pocket of a laptop bag. I'd forgotten to take it out of carry-on and place it into checked luggage. They gave me the option of mailing it back to myself and going through the 45 minute security line again. I told them no thanks, let them confiscate it and I was on my way.

I lost a Buck knife that I'd carried for as long or longer, keep hoping it turns up some how like that. It does have sentimental value.

Don't feel bad........
I know people that COULD carry a (work related)firearm on the plane & they confiscated their nailclipper.

A few years back, a guy that I worked for took a flight. Now this guy for whatever reason had a permit and carried a pistol, concealed. He carried it everyday, everywhere he went. Now, he got to the airport and right before going down to the gate area he remembered he forgot to lock up the gun in his car. He discretely hid the weapon in a big planter in the front terminal area, assuming it would be gone when he returned, but he would avoid major league hassle (this was pre 9/11/01). When he got back, he figured, oh well, might as well check. Dam thing was still there, holster and all.

So what do they do with all the confiscated stuff? I bet one could pick up a good knife at a good price if they have a sale.

Leave it to the French!
Coming back from France, a security guard took a liking to a cheap, plastic compass/thermometer thingy I had hanging off my carry on. "Where did you get this, I've been looking for one for my grandson?" It cost all of a dollar, I took it off the bag and gave it to him, I never saw anyone soo taken by a cheap plastic compass!

Before I left on my trip this weekend, I was searching the house high and low for my pack cover. Couldn't figure out where it had gotten to, so since the weather report was for clear skies this weekend, I decided not to worry about it.

Unpacking my stuff at the site this weekend, I found it was at the bottom of my pack.

I went with Jon this weekend to a gun and knife show. While looking at some knives, Jon suggested that I should carry a good knife with me when backpacking and that he wanted to buy one for me. So this is what I chose:

Benchmade Mini-Griptilian
Same great Griptilian features with a Modified Drop-Point blade and dual thumb-stud openers. Griptilian performance is keenly unleashed with a simple thumb rotation, either right or left handed, you choose. And with two sizes available let your animal instincts kick-in, and decide which one is right for you. Grrr!

Since it's a good knife that cost more than $5, I'm sure it will be the next piece of gear that I lose.

No, I was being sarcastic. It was $55, but I notice on the website that they retail for $85.

I have a Winchester knife I bought at Wally World for $10. Very sharp and holds an edge nicely.

I also have an Air Force survival knife I bought second hand in the early 70s for $25. It's on its third sheath. Indestructable!

Skullcap lost her Benchmade knife at camp Saturday morning. That's why she and Phil took so long to leave. I wonder if she found her knife? I would never take an expensive knife into the back country with me. Something in the $10-15 range I can beat to heck is what I prefer. I used the heck out of my Gerber Mini Paraframe this weekend.

I told Jon I needed the serrated edge so that I could saw my arm off when a boulder fell on it. He didn't seem so amused by that comment though. ;)
