My daughter spent last week at her dad's to go to driving class. Mini vacation for me. I was expecting her home Friday until I got the call. Mom, I've decided to stay for the weekend since I have to come back on Monday for dad's wedding.

Hip Hip Hoorah! What would you do?

Of course

Quickly I grabbed my backpack, tent and gear for a quick get away the following morning. Shoulda left right away but I needed sleep.

Here comes the foiled again part. I awoke, smiling and ready to take care of a few minor things around the house before loading the dog in the car and heading north. There was a message blinking on the phone. "Mom, I miss you can I come home this morning?" Now what do you do, "Of course you can sweetie. I miss you too" We had a nice day and enjoyed the weekend, but........I won't have a chance to get out for a trip til Sept.

You should learn to "just say no" when the message light is flashing.

What would your daughter have done if you hadn't answered the message she left? Would she have simply stayed with her dad?

It's nice you had a good time with her this weekend, you softy.

I would have asked, "Where's my invitation to the wedding?"

Yes, there's a soft side.

I started this thread for relating things that spoil your backpacking plans. What's your best story?

I got an hour away from home last fall and realized I had left my wallet at home (which I would have needed to buy gas to get home). We went the next weekend....

My best foiled-trip story is going on right now. For a little over 3 weeks now, I've put backpacking on hold to be with a very nice girl. She makes it worth it. As a friend said last weekend, its good timing that I met her during the summer, which is off-peak backpacking for me. :-)

My best near-foiled story is from a few years ago. I got out of the car in the Rockies for a break and set my camera and wallet on the car. I forgot and drove off. Thankfully, my wallet was still on the roof of the car when I realized what I did. :)

Dang T Mac, I left home with my GPS unit on top of the car just a couple of months ago. Luckily, I stopped for gas down the street before I hit the Turnpike!

Geobeet: Isn't that a horrible feeling? Neither my trail partner nor I noticed the wallet on the car. I spent a good 20 minutes searching the highway, dodging traffic and praying I'd find it. Stuck on the top the whole time. Whoohoo!

The only horrible feeling was getting out of the car, pumping gas, going to get back in the car and noticing it sitting on the roof. I had no recollection of putting it up there, so I never would have missed it until too late.

I like the foil better. Let's see...what could we do with that?

A friend of mine bought a shiny new kayak and went for his first paddle. Luckily he stopped before exiting the park. He had driven 2 miles with the thing unstrapped!

Aw heck, you can make just about anything out of aluminum foil.

Maybe not a kayak.... but who knows?

Back in May, I was getting out of town and pulled into a drivethru for some grub (it was supper time). Car overheated in the drivethru line.

I had the kids loaded up and had worked really hard to get their packs "comfortable". They were actually excited about the trip. But the car trouble screwed us.

Thats the most recent one for me. We still havn't tried to repeat that trip - maybe this fall.
