Anyone find the Lost Coast?

“Looking to do a couple of days at the Lost Coast. Does anyone have any experience or tips on the area?”

“Do you mean "couple" as in two days specifically? If so you'll be limited to an in and out hike. You can start from Shelter Cove and head north up Black Sands Beach to, oh, Shipman Creek, which is a really cool place (you'll pass lots of creeks on the way that you could camp at if you'd like, like Horse Mountain Creek, Gitchell Creek, Buck Creek). But Shipman has a nice long beach and I especially love it there.

Or you could hike south from the Mattole River down to Cooskie Creek or Randall Creek. Both options are fantastic. It's more open rolling hills around the Mattole River and you can explore the abandoned lighthouse at Punta Gorda, or hike under the more steep, forested mountains around Shelter Cove. Both these are beach routes and you can camp on the beach, which is really sweet! Bear canisters are required.

You could also hike in the Sinkyone Wilderness section, south of Shelter Cove, which is more of a ridge route than a beach route.

If they've opened up the ridge routes in the King Range, you can hike down Buck's Creek and then hit the beach and hike north to Shipman, and hike back up the ridge, or any number of other steep ridge route options. A previous fire closed much of this off and I haven't checked the status the last couple months.

You'll love it... nuttin' like hiking along a wild beach with the salty breeze in your face, watching the sunset from your campfire in a secluded cove (check fire restrictions first, they ban fires if the conditions are dry), and sleeping on the soft sand under a carpet of stars so brilliant they reach the horizon of the ocean.

“Haven't decided on how many days. Doing a bit of a walkabout up the coast (from socal) for 17 days and want to get some backpacking in as well as mountain biking. Final destination is BC and then return.

Visiting Ma in Bellingham and Seattle, Olympia and such are on the "very loose" agenda! Don't know if it will be a weekend or week day...just simply plodding along without a calendar.

“The Cascades are incredible. Sarbar is leaving tomorrow to do the loop around Mt Rainier. I'm actually taking this weekend off from bp-ing. I have city friends that haven't seen much of me this summer! ; )”
