Hilleberg Tents
I just came back from a 6 dayer solo, and I vowed that I would not carry that tent again. So, I plan to purchase a lighter tent before my next trip in a couple of weeks. I have been considering single wall tents, but over the past 6 months have been eyeing the Hilleberg Unna Tent. Anyone around here with experience with this type of tent...or the Hilleberg materials used for their tents. They are double walled tents, which I am leaning towards rather than a single walled.

Your input is appreciated.

Don't have experience with the Unna. But, I've been using my Hilleburg Atko for about a year and a half. In all but summer weather, it's awsome. I'm not a big person but there's plenty of room in it for my big dog and me. Careful pitching is important to reduce condensation. You don't have any mesh so you don't get the same ventilation as you do with a tent that utilizes mesh. It weighs 3lbs and is great for winter camping too. Bonus, it takes very little room in my pack. I really like the tent.

I have a Nallo, but I never see much input about the Unna and I don't think it sells as well as the Akto or Nallo. Hilleberg materials and workmanship are excellent, but like anything good they cost more. The Unna doesn't look like it has good ventilation and so it may not be the best choice for warm weather use. Actually, I think Hillebergs are better as colder, foul weather tents. They do allow you to return the tent if you don't like it, just don't get it dirty in case you want to return it.

I have the Akto as well. It sucks as a summer tent, but is a real nice "other 3" season tent. As with all tents, condensation does develop, but if I remember the set up of the Unna, it's more of a dome type tent, so it might not be as much of an issue.

My Akto is oneof the older (wow! has it been that long?) one with the older Kerlon 1000 fabric. It's real light weight, but not as light weight as the new stuff they have, Kerlon 1500? At rate, I only take the outter part of the tent and use tyvek on the ground. This gets the tent weight down to 1.5 lbs, with stakes, which I replaced the factory ones with the MSR ground hogs.

The best thing about Hilleberg tents is that they are put together by hand. The craftmanship is superior. Also, you'll find that Hilleberg customer service is outstanding.

Overall, great compny and fantasic tents. If I had a couple of bucks, I'd be thinking about getting a Nallo to add to the collection.

I forgot to mention that if you camp in mild conditions where you aren't likely to use a rainfly much, Hilleberg may not be your best choice. The reason is the rain fly is the main part of the tent. You can set up the inner without the fly, but it requires the use of pole pockets. However if then you want to use the fly, the tent won't be pitched right if you just toss the fly over the inner. That's my main reason for saying that these tents seem to be more for foul weather and for cold conditions where you will always want to use the fly.

thanks a bunches
people. I was able to spend sometime reading your thoughs and checking out the spcs. why is it that the manufacturues give a 3.11 wieght, when in reality, the weight is higher than that. PISSES ME OFF!

Regardless, I am going for this tent. I called the store in Boulder that seels this brand and it is the same price as all other web sites I chekc. But, hubby can get me 15% off of the price, so I am going for it. I jsut have to choose between red or green. Red is in stock, or I will have to wait to order the greeen...I got a trip planned in a few weeks. I don't know if I have the patience, PLUS...red is my FAVORITE color.

WOW...coyotes in the neighborhood in Nothern Boulder are yelping right at this very moment.

Since most of my bping is in Colorado, all of my mesh tents still have condensation depending upon the area. I DO NOT LIKE MESH. I don't want mesh. Our winter tent does not have mesh...and ventalization is by opening a crack in the door. So, I can survive that.

Well, in a nutshell, thanks a bunch.

Yah. These tents are pretty damn nice for anything but summer camping.
