I'm in the market for a new sleeping bag, and I remember somewhere that I saw a bag that can be stuffed into a nalgene bottle? I am assuming this is a summer bag, but does anyone know of a +20 bag that can do the same? Besides weight, I was hoping to greatly reduce the volume of my sleeping bag in my pack.

Check out Western Mountaineering's bags. They are expensive, but they're well made, light, and small.

marmot hydrogen (30) and helium (15) are close to that size wise

That would depend on the size of your Nalgene Matt.

Just don't mix it up with your pee bottle.

My Western Mountaineering 20* Apache comes close...

Inside a Nalgene?
Wouldn't it get wet that way?

The stuff sack that came with my Hydrogen is definitely bigger than a standard Nalgene.

I could probably pack it that small, but I'd be a little worried about cutting into the life of the loft.

Hmmm... since my Kelty Ultralight +25 degree bag's stuff sack got gnawed to ruins when it was lost for a bit in Nebraska... well, I don't have a stuff sack anymore.

It did get down to around a 2-liter bottle of pop. You've given me an idea to try. mooooooohahahaha... Although, as Hubcap said, I might be concerned about permanent damage to the down's loft.

Maybe a quilt like the Nunatak Arc Ghost or Arc Alpinist?

It might have been the Exped Butterfly Ultralite Sleeping Bag. Packs into a 10x8x3 pocket. Perhaps in a hard nalgene bottle it can be smaller. comfort rating: 37 degrees. Extreme rating: 28 degrees. Exped may have other models.

matt..I currently use a WM Highlite 40* bag in 5'6" length. Although it stuffs quite small, I'd be very leary trying to stuff it into a Nalgene bottle. I would believe it would be even tougher to stuff a 20* bag. Like others have said, I would question the damage to the loft after stuffing the bag into a Nalgene bottle.

I probably won't actually use a nalgene, but I am just hoping for a bag that stuffs really small. I have this dream of possible using my 2500 in pack for quick trips.

My Western Mountaineering Megalite packs down to about the size of a football. 30 degrees; 1lb. 8oz. My favorite bag!

I don't think Moonstone bags get enough play here.

They ave some real good ones and might serve your purpose.

my western mountaineering bag is great and all, and I am glad I got it, but it isnt' that small.
I have the versalite (15F).

the bag I've returned to REI because of the down problem was a mountainsmith vison (15 F) and VERY small, but not small enough to fit into a nalgene. Maybe into 2 nalgenes. :)

Matt, I have a Mountansmith Wisp 30* bag that gets to Nalgene size, without a compression sack. I think they retail for about 249$

Are any of these light bags more than 25" wide at the shoulder?

I don't know about the width, but the shoulder girth of the some of the lightest bags listed here are:

Moonstone Lucid - 59"
WM Highlite - 59"
Mountainsmith Wisp - 60"
WM Megalite - 64"
Marmot Hydrogen - 64"

Those diminsions are all for the regular length bags.

LtHiker, have you stuffed the Wisp into a 1L nalgene? Any noticable problems?

OPIE, I said it would come close, based on the size of stuff sack it came with. But I've never tried it and it's never even been stuffed again into the sack that it came in. I keep it in a larger sack when it's on the trail and it's never been in there for more than 8 hours or so, so yep, it still has plenty of loft :)

Never really saw a reason to try to stuff it into a nalgene bottle.

It would be pretty much water proof if ya did. I'd like to get me one of those down quilts if they weren't so darn much.

Yea, it would be pretty bomb proof in the nalgene. Kind of defeats the purpose of an ultralight sleeping bag though - sticking it in a heavy 'ol nalgene.

What about Eugene? Will he fit in a nalgene? I know he fits in a bear canister.

It's hard to imagine any sleeping bag stuffing smaller than the WM Highlite which is 16 oz and stuffs to 6" X 12"

Not without permanent damage to his body or the Nalgene ;)

Can't understand why my sleeping bag smells like Jack Daniels! I thought I emptied that Nalgene Bottle. Guess I should have rinsed it.

Big Agnes
I have a Big Agnes 20 degree and she packs down very small. In their advertising they talk about there inflatable pads that could fit in a Nalgene. You should look into this system as pad slips into sleeve on the bag. I really like mine. I am, and remain, The Dodder.
