When you spray the basement of a restaurant for cockroaches what happens?

They move.

Like the meaningful leverage we have in Africa? After all, you were just talking about how effective we are there.

Well, I guess bearmagnet just proved the entire war on terror is hopeless.

Africa's a continent. Sudan is a nation. We have more influence in some parts of Africa than others.

Sheesh, phaedrus, you're really reaching.

Perhaps not hopeless, but the manner in which we're conducting it is counter-intuitive to everyone except those who believe terrorists only strike when they believe a target is "weak".

Hopeless? I didn't say that. I'm talking about certain methods.

Maybe we should ask Israel how effective a "war" on terrorism is?

Or Reagan for the War on Drugs?

War on Poverty?

War on Cancer?

Love these "wars"

The middle east is a region. Iraq is a nation... blah blah blah.

There are distinct parallels in the rationale and situation between Iraq and Sudan, as Ped pointed out.

Nigal: I ain't demanding or even suggesting that the US should invade Sudan. It might make sense to threaten to aid the Southern rebels (who are predominantly christians and pagans) if Sudan doesn't change. An international force could protect the South the way the US protected the Kurds in Iraq.

Mutt: No need to make accusations here. First of all, I didn't say Sudan was the center of Al-Qeda activity in Africa. Are you doubting that Sudan has been far more Al-Qeda friendly than Iraq has been?
When one of the biggest pieces of "evidence" for the Iraq Al-Qeda link is the fact that Saddam sent an emissary to visit Bin-Laden in Sudan, it would take some very closed eyes not to notice that the #&%!$ was in Sudan!

Here are the facts:
* After the Suadi's cracked down on Bin-laden and otheres, the leader of Sudan (Hasan Al-Turabi) invited Bin Laden to come to Sudan.
* Bin-Laden spent years in Sudan, and gathered his guerillas/terrorists in Sudan.
* Abdel Raman who was a key player in the first World Trade Center attack got his Visa to go to the US in Sudan. Sudan harbored him despite or because of his terrorist connections in Egypt.
* Sudanese based Egyptian terrorists attempted to assasinate Mubarak in 1995.
* Bin Laden spent years in Sudan (1991 - 1996, I think).
* After several reported attempts to assasinate Bin Laden in Sudan (by the Egyptians?), UN sanctions against Sudan.
* While Turabi was ousted in a coup in 2002, the government remains Al-Qeda friendly.

"It might make sense to threaten to aid the Southern rebels (who are predominantly christians and pagans) if Sudan doesn't change."

This is far and away the worst suggestion I've ever heard. First, never bluff. Second: This type of thing has always come back on us. Supplying an enemy’s enemy and run shlt from behind the curtain almost always turns out bad. We do that now then 10 years from now when the xtians and the pagans turn sour Violin will be posting pictures of Rumsfeld meeting with them and saying how evil we were for doing this. LOL!

Besides, turning one religion against another can never have a good outcome.
