I may be really naive, but never owning a mateable sleeping bag, I don't know the answer to this....

If I were to get a regular length mateable bag, would it still be able to mate with a long length one?

If the bags don’t mate the relationship is doomed.

I'm doing a family thing that weekend, but just recently I was looking at the OLP map and thinking about an overnighter there in the fall.

I’ve never tried to put two bags together, but if the connection starts at the bottom of the bags I would think that it would work.

if the bags have hoods, then someone is gonna be sleeping with one over their face.
other than that, just make sure the zips are the same 'tooth' size.
why dontchya get matching bags to go with the matching packs and jackets?

If you're starting from scratch, get two long bags. Trust me on this one.

scorch - Big Agnes bags allow you to do that according to their site.

Scorchy...it depends. Some makers put the same length zipper in their regular and long bags so that they remain mateable. Also, if one of you buys a left zip bag, and the other buys a right zip bag, then the hood-in-the-face problem is also solved.

I haven't really noticed that it matters the size of the bag. The zippers are centered on both bags. As mentioned above just make sure one is left hand zip and the other right. However, the wife and I have always had the same brand/make bag (different size) not that I think this really matters, just makes it easier because you know the teeth on the zippers are the same size.

Gestation period ?
After the bags mate, how long do you have to wait until you get the cute little baby bags ?

It all depends upon the manufacterer. Take a look at this long and regular length Moonstone Bags mated:

Am I the only one who sees this thread title and mistakes it for saying, "Meatable Bags"? Even after I know what it says I still keep chuckling when I skim passed it.

OK, maybe it is just me...please pray for me....

David Cross. He said, "My pants are tight!". Everytime my wife and I see him on TV we both say at the same time, "Green quarter!". LOL! Yeah, we're both losers.

luke and i have used our mateable bags about 3 times now and there seems to be one problem we keep having: our thermarests don't stay together and i always winding up sleeping between them in that crack and lemme tell ya, it gets cold on the tent floor!

any suggestions? is there any time of contraption to keep the thermarests together that is sold? i'm thinking of rigging them together somehow, but i figured it'd be a lot easier to buy something that's sold for that purpose.

go to wal mart and get some one inch wide velcro at the craft section - that and a hot glue gun should solve the problem.

Yea, Lindsey and I have the "couple's kit" for the thermarest and they work well. The only problem with the mateable bags is we seem to 1. kick each other a lot more and 2. She gets colder because of more space and I get hotter because of two people. We tend to mate the bags only at certain times then. But for you scorch, the couples kit will work great (they also can be used for a great sling shot)

“go to wal mart and get some one inch wide velcro at the craft section - that and a hot glue gun should solve the problem.”

that might work because he's got the wide thermarest and i got the smaller one so the couples kit might not stretch across both?

What's your idea Roam? Run a strip of velcro down the edges of the pads, hooks on one of them and loops on the other?

You could probably make a custom couple kit with some 1" webbing, a couple of ladderlocks, and a couple of triglides too.

I'll vouch for the thermarest pad coupler thingy that Bit posted. Kamper & I had the same problem until we got one.
