Going up Hogsback and approaching the Pearly Gates in 5/94. Mt Hood is an "easy" climb and coupled with the fact is is so close to Poartland Oregon, it attracts a lot of wannabes. Once you pass the Pearly Gates, you are almost at the summit. The was only the one crevasse you see that had to be negotaited at that time.

USA, do you rope up at the hogsback? I'd be tempted to go up unroped from there next time, with only the one crevasse and all. If you were roped up and slid, you cold drag your partners and other rope teams down, when its crowded.

I did Hood solo. Even if I had been with someone, it would have been a wee bit embarrassing to be roped up there. Maybe the many people who climb Hood as their first-ever climbing experience would want to rope up.

Seems like they all do rope up there, and we did too. But I thought at the time that it was probably more dangerous to be roped up than not. I heard that a recent accident was caused when a guy slipped and pulled several other rope teams off and they all went sliding. I think the ice gulley I was in on Shasta, unroped, was steeper than this part of Hood.

Hey USA, again, great shot! You do very well with a camera.

The view from the summit of Hood looking west towards the haze of Portland. 5/94 Hard to believe that it has been 10 years already.

Mt Hood
The view from Timberline Lodge. The only mountain I ever climbed that was a straight beeline from start to summit.

Nice photos. When were they taken? I'm surprised you got them without anybody else in the pictures.

Relatively few people because it was a weekday in late May '94, after the ski season.
