I'm new
I got orders to Norfolk a few months back and all ive heard pretty much are horror stories about the base and area. Prior navy i was big into fly fishing, i was wondering if any one knew of any prime spots to go to cause i know theres gotta be some somewhere. or if there was anyplace relatively close to go backpacking.

should be lots of saltwater fishin to be done. lots of creeks and backwater type areas off the bay.

as far as bpin' goes, its about 4 o4 5 hours to the mtns in the western part of the state, the George Washington National Forest.

check your base activities center
many will have fishing trips, equipment for rental. And, some bases have rod and gun shops.
Also, check with the local bait shops, or tackle shops.

Good luck, yes, once a fisherman always one.

batman luke...ahve Scorchie meet you in Front Royal, Va. for a long weekend. You can float the South Fork of the Shenandoah and also hike part of the AT, which is right there. Awesome 3 or 4 day trip. The South Fork offers some of the best Smallie fishin' in the east!

It's been YEARS since I lived in VA, but I used to love fishing for LM Bass at Lake Anna. Not really that bad a drive for you, 84 to Richmond, then north on 95. I still have a number of "sweet spots" indelibly etched in my memory, lemme know if you ever go there & I'll send you something that may be helpful.

I used to BP in Shenandoah & fly-fish a little there, but it was also long ago & from what I read the trails I used to hit are now over-run with that awful parasite...people. Stick to fishing.

BTW, salt-water surf-casting can be a blast. Very different from the elegance of fly-fishing, but still fun.

Little Creek
batman...I spent some time across town at Little Creek (the amphib base) and can tell you that the town in general just sucks A** if you feel like getting outside. Virginia Beach is okay, but you got to go a long way to get away from the concrete jungle around Norfolk.

Not that I'm the sort to attend these kind of establishments....but what's up with the strip clubs in Norfilk not allowing stripping? You can see more at the beach than in the gentlemen's clubs around there...

You can also check out Roanoke Rapids & John Kerr reservoirs... maybe even closer to Norfolk than Lake Anna. Larger lakes, used to be good LM Bass fishing.

OK you two, get a room, or a private chat room for Pete's sake. Luke, we'll have to get together for a flyfishing trip sometime. I checked out the Mt. Rogers area last time I was there but didn't have time for any fishing. Maybe we could plan a Smokies or Shanandoah trip sometime with hiking/fishing combined.
