I know someone that, when desperate, after washing Down throws it in the dryer on delicate with tennis balls to "keep the fluff". Anyone ever hear of this?

alot of people suggest the tennisballs, but i've also heard it's not the best way.

excerpt from this article:

IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DONT TRY TO USE OBJECTS TO SHORTCUT THE WORK; THE SHOE OR TENNIS BALL MAY TEAR OR DAMAGE THE DOWN GARMENT /SLEEPING BAG.

bearmagnet, as posted a few posts before your question, I said I use tennis balls and the dryer, lol. Read man, read!

I've washed my down bags countless times and had no problems. I'm careful about it though, check on them throughout the cycles and untangle them gently if necessary.

I could see a shoe tearing a bag but a tennis ball? I'd guess the bag was made of some really delicate stuff if a small felt ball can rip it.

Uhhhhhhh...I think I read that but I forgot my Ritalin today.

My bag got torn baffles with tennis balls in a dryer.

A question, it's great you have a front loader at a relative's, but is it big enough? Those bags absorb a ton of water and the down expands. I think I did both my bags one at a time in a big laudromat front loader. Course, I dunno, would less space be better, maybe prevent the bags be moved around much more?

I can see it both ways. LOL! Dang, I hate that! :-)

i don't really know one way or the other. i just wanted to pass on the info.

i don't think they're saying the bag would rip from the tennisball, but in a less-than-top-quality or older bag it might damage the baffles.

you can wash the bag and the smell should go away - use the special detergent they sell at the pet store that removes pet odors.

Tara listen to Wingding. Having 3 dogs myself I have run into similar issues...not with my sleeping bag though. I wouldn't think twice about washing my down bag, I don't care what the manufacture states. I always tumble dry my sleeping bag when I come home from camping and have washed it on several ocassions. When we have pet accidents at home we use some stuff that we get from the local vacume cleaner shop. They also sell similar stuff at the pet store, natures miracle or something like that.

Well, Tarabull?

What have you done to your bags so far? Inquiring minds want to know?

I'll have a full report tomorrow. For now, the bags have been airing out in the yard. Been busy, but, tomorrow, I should have time to sit in front of a washing machine for a while.

I dunno. I washed them at my parent's house (front-loader) and mom hung them to dry for me... I haven't been back to check. I'll be there this afternoon, tho.

I washed a down bag in my
top loading washing machine on the delicate cycle and then hung it out to dry and then tossed it around after drying and it was like new.

Top loaders have high risk of tearing interior baffles that keep the down from shifting.

Help, I changed my cat's litter box and put it outside to dry but forgot to fill it back up and put it back. My cat peed on my tent that was out in the garage to dry from my last trip.

Can the tips given her be used on tents?

Tarabull, were you able to get the smell out?

I had a similar thing happen, but it wasn't Mr. Hyde. I had left my old tent out to air out and some cat from the neighborhood got it. I started a thread for some help with that at the time, but can't find it now. What worked was spraying this stuff on it that I don't remember what it was called. Something like Nature's Recipe or something. Someone will know what it is.

bit and nigal, beleave me i'd LOOOVE to do that but 1. my wife won't let me and 2. that won't help my tent.

bowlder, it's probably nature's miricle...i have used that before but didn't know if i could use it on a tent...i guess it would be alright cause it's all natural, but then again so is cat pee, but if you used it on a tent alright then i guess i'll give it a whirl

(opens thread)

Cat lover: Humm dee dum, well that's what you get for not putting kitty's litter box back! Ha ha! Wait, what's this? A bag? Hm. A brick? A scared angry kittycat? WHAT? A...a lake? WHO WOULD DARE SUGGEST DROWNING A PWECIOUS KITTYCAT? BITPUSHER! YOU BASTARD!

Go to PetSmart or equivalent. Ask for the stuff that gets pee out of carpets, etc. It has some type of enzymes that break down the urine. It comes as a spray and as a wettable powder if I remember right. I think that will help.

Ditto what Tara said. I've used vinegar on things (not tents, but other things) and it seems to work well. Just be sure to rinse well...

Bit, that is (snicker) not funny (chuckle) at ALL (snort) to those of us (guffaw) who like cats...
