Best pants?
Anyone have any suggestions for the best pants to hike in. I'm looking for something to wick the moisture out and keep the heat in.

You can spend a lot of money on pants, but I bought a cheap pair of convertibles at T.J. Maxx and they have served me well. In the fall, I wear just those pants with gaiters. If it gets warm on a hike, I unzip them and push the bottoms down into my gaiters, so I can easily pull them back up again if I need to. In winter, I wear a pair of wicking tights under the pants, and I'm plenty warm. In the summer, I usually wear shorts and my gaiters.

I wouldn't worry too much about buying high-performance pants. Just get a pair of comfortable, non-cotton convertible pants Carry a pair of rainpants with you if you want that extra protection.

I think the best pants to hike in are your own. I've tried hiking in others' but the are usually too small and ride up.

Thank you, I'll be here all week.

I wore these for a year straight and they were excellent.

Get a convertable pant and go from there. The real issue, if you are a man, is what type of wrapping you have for your bits and pieces. Now this is important.

My only pants, hot or cold, is the Rail Riders EcoMesh zip pants. Link here. Anything below 50 I keep them zipped up, when it warms up mid-day (or in the summer) I unzip them and still get full sun and insect protection - unlike generic zip-off type pants. Also all nylon so it drys in 15 minutes.

I have the short-sleeve EcoMesh shirt for summer and the EcoMesh zip long-sleeve shirt for cooler weather.

i agree with ww.

most important thing about pants - how they fit in the giggleberry area. nothing kills a hike like chafing, or riding too high or too low.

I usually hike in river shorts. They have a liner, so that takes care of undies. It has to be under about 40* during the day for me to wear pants.

I haven't too much luck in hiking in other's pants either. Twigs and berry protections is definitely a plus for me

www.eofficio.com

Nylon pants with or with out zip on legs/ With or without sewn in brief; Extra thin material for summer wear; Heavy material for cool weather.

Be sure to get nylon.
You can get them on sale at
Sierra Traders for around $35.

I wear the thin ones in the woods all summer long. Very durable.

I wear shorts most of the time. If you hiking why not start off in shorts. You are going to get hot during the day so why bother with zip off pants. Save those for around the fire at night.
