Hello everyone!

I have heard a lot about this Cytomax energy drink, and that it is very good for backpacking & hiking

Well, I decided to order the 24 packet, just received it today.
Wondering if anyone uses this while hiking or backpacking & if they feel that it does help them?

Also when do you start drinking it and how often?
On the back of the package it says to drink 15 to 30 minutes into your exercise..yet the man I talked to on the phone tells me to drink it 45 minutes before I even start my exercise? Don't quite understand that.. why the difference.

I have no idea what the differance is.

The only thingI know is that it makes fer a great mixer with gin!

I had delivered 10 packets of the rasberry tea.

I've have the others as well. Very nice, no sweet after taste. Only problem is that you have to shake the stuff up a little, as it settles on the bottom.

IMHO, GREAT recovery drink (mix)!

I used to use Cytomax for my cycling and mountain biking. With some people, myself included, it can be difficult to digest, giving you a bloated feeling.

As it does digest, it will give you more sustained energy and replacement of electolights for sustained performance.

I use replacement drinks into activity starting at around the 30 minute mark. For something where my heart rate was down (hiking) I'd use it at around the 45 minute mark.

Be sure to drink lots of water in between bottles of Cyto/Hammer etc as it will aid in digesting it.

Another trick is to buy Hammergel, squeeze a bunch of it into a water bottle and use that as your replacement.

If I am going to buy one of those products, though, I have the best luck for both performance and digestion with Revenge products.

Good luck!

What works best for me on long sustained work outs (150 - 200 mile rides) is honey, peanut butter and fig newtons. Mix 'em up how you like but they provide carbs, protein, sugars, salt and potassium (no crampy). I'll also take along some tums for the calcium and chew them along the way.

I usually add some salt to my water at a fill up, as well, to replace more of what I am purging.

Maybe some Hammergel for in between stop boosts (can "eat" it on the bike).

Hammergel is at www.hammernutrition.com and can be found at good bike shops.

You can mix orange and vanilla, chocolate, raspberry and espresso, or whatever and make your own flavor combo. Good stuff and easily digestable.

Is that the EAS stuff?
Yeah, I have that. It has ruined my Nalgenes. It is so hard to clean out of glasses as well. What a pain in the butt.

I have never used it for hiking/bp-ing though. Only before my workouts at the gym.

Got gunk? Is your Nalgene funky inside? I have found that cat piss makes a great Nalgene detergent. Pass it on.

Thanks Buck
When I get home today I will try to encourage my cat to pee into my Nalgene instead of her litter box. Wish me luck!

I know! I'll use old Gatorade bottles and toss em. Then I don't have to worry about it.

Alarmist here
Why do you have to keep Cytomax away from Children?

Cytomax contains Amino Acids, yes? Amino Acids that are produced by your body, not the essentials?

If I remember my biochemistry, the body may stop producing an Amino Acid if an artificial supply is consumed long enough. I'm not sure that's reversible or how long one has to consume the artificial supply.

I'm pretty sure there were problems with an over the counter "all natural" sleep inducer that included an Amino Acid at a decent dose.

Everythings fuzzy, though. Might look into this later, unless someone has some facts?

Goodnight.

My 2 cents
Amino Acids are the building blocks of proteins. The way the "AA's are linked together determines the type of protein it becomes. enzymes, immunity cells, and even snot are made of AA's. Every high pro food you eat is made of Amino Acids. Munch all you want, you'll make more!

pixie - I've used those Clorox bleach sheets to get rid of the stank and stain.

Fill nalgene up 3/4 of the way, put two sheets in. Shake and goto bed. In the morning, shake and rinse.

When I need to clean my fliter, I pump that water out, through my fliter, into an empty nalgene. Ten I will clear the nalgene with clean water.

Try it next time.

I drink Cytomax all the time. It got me thru my first marathon without training and I've used it ever since. Its better if you drink it right away. If it sits overnight its not as good. Don't know why.

Love the Hammer Gel too! Banana is my favorite!

When I snowboard I usually take Cytomax, HammerGel and Snickers. Usually don't stop for lunch, and that gets me thru the day.

Pure, clear water
Nothing else needed! If I do use something, its usually a pinch of Kool-aid or some similar additive that I'll use in water thats been sanitized with iodine. I usually take along a small bottle of multi-vitamins and take one each day.

I've found a balanced diet with a few extra carbs works out great. . . and getting your butt off the couch and out the door for regular workouts.

BTW, if you're using freeze dried meals, ever notice how much salt they contain? I believe its about a weeks worth per meal.

You've got a good point. However, there is a difference between the 9 essential amino acids found in natural sources that your body doesn't produce vs. the other 11. The main reason you need protein is for the 9 you lack, not for the others. I'm still pretty sure taking mega doses of AAs produced by your body can cause problems.

I am paranoid about over the counters - too much crap coming out b/c of FDA loopholes.

I use a drink called "Ultima".
www.ultimareplenisher.com/

I have used this on many hot trail runs and hikes. It is very easy on the stomach, has all the electrolytes, minerals that you need and no sugar. It has an ok taste, being naturally sweetened.

It is not readily available, but can be obtained through the web site. Definitely worth trying.

From dietition.com
OK - I'm getting my biochemicals confused. this topic, is not easy to research. But this site has some interesting stuff.

I know Cytomax isn't focused on AA's and I am but its "promotion" of alanine & glutamin sticks in my throat. You don't need them so I wonder about the rest of it. Is it pseudoscience?

"There is no research to support any benefit to taking amino acid supplements for persons who exercise. Amino acids are either essential (8 can't be made by the body and must come from a source outside the body) or non-essential (12 that can be made within the body from essential amino acids). If you take an amino acid supplement, make sure it is contains only essential amino acids (isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine) or you are wasting your money. Amino acids eaten in crystalline form will be absorbed directly into the blood stream. Your body can only use so much protein and any excess is used for energy or stored as fat. Your body uses protein to build and repair lean tissue (muscles and organs)."

Dietition.com

Now if I could only find a primary source for this info then I could sleep. :)

I used to drink Cytomax, but I just can't stomach it anymore - yuck!. I usually carry the new Gu Hydration Drink, but if I can't find that I use Gatorade - they both taste good and seem to help out on the trail.

Water with E-caps (also by Hammer nutrition) Gu for shorter workouts under 3 hours. I take solid foods from bananas to meat and cheese bagels for longer workouts.

Endurox recovery drink after a hard or long workout.

As for hiking, I take my normal snacks that include some protein and carbs, water and the e-caps so that I don't have to drink a bunch of sugar.

cytomax
I've used it alot and noticed that I don't get cramps or dizziness when doing heavy labor. I take it hiking in it's powder form in a xtra-long big-gulp type of fat straw. since i bought the 1.5 lb(orange flaver) can, and it is almost gone now, I can truthfully say I like it alot. The only think I don't like about it and other electrolyte powders, is that it clumps after being opened after about a month. I drink a 16 oz serving before leaving TH or working. And another when I take a break, about 2 hours later. In between I drink water, either from a sippy tube camel, or 6 oz cup. A 1.5 lb can lasted me about a year, so my $17 investment from the local health food store was pretty well-spent IMHO. (i live in AZ where the daytime temps i work in can be 105 degrees. anything over that and I am not going out there)

You are right! Taking mega doses of anything is not good for you.

A healthy Person only needs between .8-1.2g Pro/Kg body weight. Most of what you (meaning all of us) read about supplements, are just geared to sell you something. The supplement industry is a billion dollar are year gig. Whole natural foods is the way to go.
