I did some small hikes in January (dry season) - one called the "Hanging Bridges" in an old-growth rainforest near Arenal Volcano and another at Santa Elena Preserve cloud forest near Monteverde. Very beautiful!

There are lots of places to day hike in Costa Rica, but old-growth forest is somewhat patchy unless you go to the Corcovado Peninsula. That is the place to do some serious backpacking, as the entire area is covered in continuous virgin lowland rainforest. Be well prepared/informed if you do this because there are more dangers in the tropics.

I had the pleasure of being in Costa Rica for a month about 4 years ago. What a wonderful country.

I did alot of day hiking there - Irazu, Arenal, Volcan Barva, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, La Cruz. The only overnighter was to climb Cerro Chiripo, the highpoint of Costa Rica at 13,000' (or so). That was a wonderful hike.

Let me know if you want me to elaborate on anything.

Peace.

We are thinking about a family vacation to CR and I heard it was beautiful. I'll revisit this thread once we set up a date. Thanks.

One of my daughters, while at Johns Hopkins, did an internship there one summer. Then she stayed there for the fall term in 1999. If you get down to some specifics, I can let her look at them for you.

I have only hiked across the border from Panama. I lived in Panama for six years. Panama has a Volcan, too. It is just across the border from Costa Rica. Remember that it can get cold as you go up any of the mountains and can even snow near the tops.

Chinmusic, anyone heard of/from him? I'm considering a Costa Rica trip and thought I'd bump this up.
