Campers Murdered
Not what my wife needed to hear as I go solo for my first time.

When I go solo, I always get off trail once I'm ready to call it a night.

The odds of that happening on the trail are a lot less than that happening while you're sleeping in you bed at home.

That's why everyone should carry a gun on the trail!

Memo to self: Carry gun on the trail and if you meet Mutt, strike preemptively. It's just good geopolitics.

Sorry, but my double-secret-preemptive-strike would neutralize your threat before you could act, geobeet. Now *that's* smart geopolitics!

Well I am off to the manistee river trail this weekend. Leaving firearms at home. My wife feels better, now that she knows it is a trail I had been on before with one of my kids.

This is so horrible. They were whitewater raft guides on the same stretch of American River where I guided for a couple summers, and they were on a beach in Sonoma County, which I frequent. They worked with kids and had devoted their life to this ministry. They were engaged and were soon to head back home for their wedding. They were active wilderness adventurers and this is so tragic and freaky. My heart goes out to their families.

Wow! This IS scary.
"This is a very disturbing case. It appears to be a terrible crime and absent of any motive. It’s a cause of great concern to us. The victims, from all indications, from all sources that we have, were very up-standing citizens, very honorable people who had an absolute absence of enemies,” says Lt. Dave Edmonds of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department.

Yikes!
That is awful to hear-- Such a tragedy for 2 families.... I hope they find the person who killed them!

Very sad
Besides no motive, they were probably sleeping when attacked. It makes no sense.

So so sad.
I hope my mom doesn't hear about this, she will freak everytime I go backpacking. She is such a worry wart. And I'm 33! I'm not a baby anymore.

Mutt you make a joke out of two people shot in the head while sleeping? You have no place here.

Safe and Sound
Well I made it back without incident. This was the nicest weekend I have had on the MRT. No rain for once. Cool breeze during the day, nice and cool at night. No pictures right now, I shot slide film on this trip.
I noticed there was a sign at the bridge asking hikers to park a mile west of the bridge. That was new to me. Also I lot more signs about camping at designated spots. I ignored both this trip.
