you guys are hard core...

Lee, that was wrong...so very, very wrong! Did you ever see that South Park episode with the gyroscopic bike?

so wrong ...
So wrong . ..it was right??

No . . .i am South park virgin.

I have been to Fire Island. A friend's sister ahad a summer share out there with her boyfriend.

Had a blast. And you know .. ..i don't remember there being that many gay folks out there. Not that it would have mattered at all . . .I just figured it would be like Provincetown . .. and it was a lot more low key.

RE: biking. Did my usual loop with the gang this morning plus a couple of mile add-on. Total was about 22.5.

good old PTown - except some of the bars have two womens restrooms and no mens restroom and others have two mens restrooms and no womens restrooms.

16.75 miles just completed. 5 laps around the park, each lap ending with a kick butt hill.

I feel a bit tired and sweaty - but good. Really good.

I didn't just fall down just once with the new pedals. I fell down everytime I got on the bike. Now my arm is all cut up and I have an ice pack on my hand. I couldn't unclip when I stopped. I went back to the bike store to get the old toe clips put back on and they talked me out of it. They said that I should have let them put me on a trainer to practice and make sure the tension was right. Now I'm going back to the store with my bike in the morning to give it a try on the trainer. Learning how to use these pedals is pretty painful. I think I probably should have bought women specific shoes too - the ones I bought seem a bit wide. If I can get the hang of the pedals I'll buy the womens shoes.

I can do it!

They put my bike on a trainer at the bike store and they loosened the pedals. I practiced in the store for a while on the trainer and then took it outside and I could do it. I'm still nervous after all the falling down, but it'll get better.

go wingding!

I still unclip when I see a high liklihood of needing to stop very suddenly, like cross traffic, group ride slowing excessively.

Following the CTS plan posted for the Ride for the Roses certainly focuses on climbing!

Lots of climbing intervals just below lactate threshold and accelerating on climbs. My legs are aching a little tonight. Getting up early tomorrow for a 4 hour ride. Only missed one workout this week, feeling pretty strong.

Ride for the Roses is 11 weeks from tomorrow.

Did it. 4 hours at a good pace. My cyclometer got out of alignment, so don't know for sure till I run it out on topo, but at least 40 miles. Sunrise, nobody else out when you hit the road at 0530.

That's a pretty tough looking 45 miles Pathman.

I made it 10 miles tonight after work with my new pedals and didn't fall down once. I find that I'm always unclipping my right foot no matter which way I'm going.

I envy you Pathman. Living on the Gulf Coast, there is no great difference in elevation. The highest point around here is only around 350 ft. I would love to try some serious climbing. I did a total of around 175 miles last week, with nothing comparable to your chart in elevation.

I feel for you steppenwolf. I lived in Valparaiso for four years as a kid in the mid 60's. I survived by roaming the creeks, forests and swamps, but much prefer the northland or mountains and desert. Val-P was a great place to bike as a kid though! We were all over that little burg.

Even the hiking sucks around here. You have to drive about 4 hours for some cool terrain. Also, the humidity is a killer most of the year.

Getting my bike loaded up for the weekend. Riding up to Central Park where I'll then go by car out to NJ. Hoping to ride around Princeton this weekend. But dang, I've got to get a weekend bag (small backpack stuffed full), water, a purse, and bike gear all strapped up for the ride to the park. I wish I had a basket. :(

My ride comes out to 50 miles when I topo it. My cyclometer has this habit of wigging out for a few miles, doubles my speed. !?! Nearly always happens around the Astronomy bldg. 50miles puts me near 17mph solo, which is more my speed. Still, my training looks to be on track to meet my ride goal.

Highlights of todays ride.

Predawn dark, NO traffic. The traffic lights in town were meaningless.

Cruise UNM campus at dawn. Head down towards the valley with with Los Lobos "Down to the River" booming from my ipod. [all Los Lobos morning, very good for intervals and cruising through Martineztown neighborhood.]

Cruise into Old Town Plaza just in time for early mass, make two spins and head on to the Rio Grande

Reach the river trail and several hot air balloons are up directly overhead, lit by the sun coming up over the Sandias.

Roadrunner. I see one about 2/3 of my rides. The early morning crowd hits the Rio Grande bosque trail around 7-7:30.

Another pass through UNM. The runners, walkers and cyclists are out by now, back through Uptown, along Arroyo del Oso golf course, the Albuquerque Academy and home.

Nice spin!

Pathman, you got me inspired to ride today. I ahve been commuting but no pleasure rides. Did a 14.5 mile ride to the inlaws for dinner. 87 and sunny with strong headwinds. Lots of fun and I even passed a skinny tire dude with my trail bike. Lots of fine tuning to do still since the frame swap out, but all in all a better fit and ride.

This past winter and spring I would try to get 3 weekly rides. Minimum 1hr with one ride lasting 2-3 at about 75% of my max Heart Rate.

Answer to B, yes.

Pathman/Birch - Do you do any indoor riding to supplement your training? If so, I have a follow up or two.
Sarge

I hate the indoors.
Pathman

8/28/05

Me too.

Ok, in the interest of efficiency, I'll ask anyways.

I had ACL reconstruction about 2.5 months ago. My ACL is going to get worse before it gets better (has to tie into the circulatory system first).

In the meantime, I'm on a recumbant bike training. I can't ride outside because my knee wouldn't support if I had to step down quickly.

My current schedule coicidentally looks exactly like birch's. My pace is 23 (virtual) MPH or higher. My resistance varies (depending on what the therapist allows), but hovers around 8th out of 12th gear.

I don't know how that translates to outside riding.

You're at that resistence the whole time. No down hills. It's always sort of an uphill ride, but not immensely steep.

I'm trying to figure out how that would translate to real-world biking.

Any ideas???

(giving myself an ice massage on the knee as typing this ...)

Ah, so you were listing equivalents above. Very interesting. That is more along the lines I was expecting, but wasn't sure. 75 minutes outdoors = 1 hour indoors, minus the birdies and trees.

"Now you know ... the rest of the story."

Thanks a lot Pathman for the legwork and information. Much appreciated!

I thought I would check into the bike thread and see if anyone is routinely commuting via bicycle these days. I have been keeping up with it for the past 3 months, usually getting to and from work with pedal power 3 or 4 days a week. It's really quite enjoyable.

Now that I have this down pretty well, I'm trying to figure out how to extend it through the winter months. Cold weather backpacking and the clothing/gear needed for that should lend itself well to cycling in fidgid temps. I just need to find me the right bike to do the commute reasonably efficiently when there is snow, slush, and ice on the ground.
hubcap

Hubcap, commuting in wionter is an idea I have toyed with a few times. My problem isnt the snow, rather the salt ripping my components apart. I may try this year though and just clean it often. The commute ride has been nice. I like the morn better, cooler and zero cars, the way home isnt to bad but is more like a commute than ride. I plan on extending my AM rides to get some extra miles in. How far is your ride?

I did a map on mt TOPO! program and have a nice SAFE (hopefully) route to and from school planned. I will try tomorrow if the weather permits. About 14-15 there (from work) and maybe 11 or so home.

More fine tuning on the bike today, my saddle will be setup for tomorrow. The cyclometer is back and and my durned cadence counter doesnt work right....

Consider a beater bike for short commutes. It might not be as efficient as a good bike, but the wear and tear won't hurt so much and even if it gets stolen the sting won't be as bad. I used my old Panasonic road bike for that purpose and it worked out pretty good.

RichB, I have thought about getting an old 10 speed for that reason, but since the roads I ride were imported from beirut in the late 80's I need my trail bike. Maybe a clunker trail bike?
birch

Lots of old clunkers around. Check the used bike section of the paper or other publication. I'd bet you'd get a great deal on a used bike.
