Soon I was plowing through an inch of water flowing down the street. Rain jacket and leg warmers were welcome. My ventilated cycling shoes drained very nicely. Bad part was the sections of bike path where the goatheads had recently been mowed. The fly all over the path and wait like a mine field for unsuspecting cyclist to come along. The new Bontrager wheels are great, but the tires will have to go. Gators go back on. Jury is still out on Slime Lites. The are light, but didn't quite seal half a dozen goathead punctures in each. I'll see how they do with the Gators. They got me home but tires were still leaking. 31 miles/2 hours, not counting 43 minutes lost to goathead attacks. ![]() last edited: 10/15/05 9:01:41 PM” 8:59:44 PM 10/15/05 “Last weekend I road 25 miles of the Greenbrier River Trail in WV. My first bike trip in six years. Currently my website is lost/down/disappeared...so until my host gets back to me I can't post any pics. I just bought a new domain tonight and will build a new outdoor site to post my pics and adventures. Great trail though...perfect for a hybrid bike (which I don't have).” 10:39:03 PM 10/15/05 “I have a hybrid bike that sits it the garage - it's much slower than a road bike and it's really not built to be used on dirt. Raining in Southern California today. I didn't get out of bed until 11 am, so I missed the 8:30 am spinning class.” 1:44:35 PM 10/16/05 “After Saturday's slogfest, Sun AM was a perfect ride. 49-55F, dry except a few puddles. I hit the road at 5:30, so had no traffic for most of the ride and ovoided the bike paths with goatheads. First trees changing in the bosque, more and more waterfowl around. My last "Peak" workout. I taper this week and ride on Sun, head to Austin on Friday. Bike is in the shop for a final checkover.” 6:54:15 AM 10/17/05 “Good luck in Austin Pathman!” 10:43:04 AM 10/17/05 Pathman “Thanks for the updates. Best of luck with your ride this weekend. You certainly have put the time and effort into it.” 1:00:21 PM 10/17/05 “I have a lot of great miles this season. Probably closing in on 2000 since May.” 6:49:18 AM 10/18/05 path “UGH!!!!! I am just shy of 2000. Literally just off. I had 1776 when I finished my century three weekends ago. Since then I have put on less than 100 . ..probably only 40 or so. I want to break 2000 before it comes inside of rhe season . ..but . .. .but . .. .psychologically I have moved on. getting up in the dark and riding it the dark (sun rises at 7;10 . ...just as I would be FINISHING a ride). Anyhoo . . ..I gotta try to squeeze out another 160 miles somehow. . . ..even if I have to pay the kids to spin the tire for me!!!!” 8:41:20 AM 10/18/05 rode thi smorning “beautiful morning. At 5:45 the moon was high in the sky, just past full. About 42 degrees. rode the usual 21. This puts me at 1904 for the season. . . I'll have to stay with it long enough to get 2000.” 9:25:38 AM 10/19/05 “How about a long weekend ride lee to get you close to your goal? Is the end of the season for you when the snow comes? My bike is on the trainer again. I can't keep track of my miles while it's on the trainer because the front wheel doesn't spin. Last night I tried one of those spinerval videos - it was a good work out.” 10:49:13 AM 10/19/05 “what a day yesterday. I told a buddy of mine that I would go watch him do the last mtn bike race of the season, somehow he talked me into competing in the beginner class. After watching him take a first overall for the sport class I was up. It was amazingly fun and fast. Loads of hills and tight singletrack. It went much better then I expected and will do it next season. I even managed to take 3rd place, talk about surprise!” 4:30:46 AM 10/24/05 Ride for the Roses Century: 5:53 total time “· Monstrous cross and tail winds, short periods of head wind. Cottonwoods getting near full yellow, winter wheat and hay planted. Fresh bread coming out of the hornos (outdoor adobe ovens) as we backtracked to a climb to high Placitas. The two I was riding with got a couple of hundred yards ahead at that point, they waited a little and I blasted downhill. Skinny short dudes. They didn't mind a 6'1" 195# windscreen at all on the flats or downhills. 1:50 32 miles. Not sure about the vertical, maybe 1500' from the bridge to the highpoint.” 8:00:42 PM 10/30/05 “Sounds like a nice ride Pathman. My ride today - 20 miles starting out at my house. The first 8 miles are uphill - about 1,400 feet gain. Then it's down mostly with a couple short uphills - total gain about 1,700 or 1,800 feet. It's a nice loop, but I think I'm going to try working on this ride: A 17 mile loop that gains 2,400 feet over the first seven miles and I can have apple pie when I reach the top. From there I loop back mostly downhill to the starting point. Getting up that 2,400 feet is going to be tough.” 10:29:51 PM 10/30/05 Hey look! 7:11:12 PM 11/06/05 whats that.. “got to do with you... good story though.” 6:41:20 PM 11/09/05 Vann Schaffner=Pathman “I am the person in the story. last edited: 11/09/05 6:44:23 PM” 6:43:49 PM 11/09/05 ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh... “very cool. But Kate Nelson is much cuter...why couldn't you be her?” 6:46:14 PM 11/09/05 “She'll be riding the Tour de Tucson, Leukemia and Lymphoma, Team in Training. You could meet here there.” 6:49:15 PM 11/09/05 really??? “and when is that?” 6:53:33 PM 11/09/05 “11/19 and I should not pretend that I could arrange it. I should say that it would be possible for you to meet her. ;-D These big rides offer plenty of opportunities though! El Tour” 6:59:36 PM 11/09/05 heck... “she works for NPR!!!. I'm in love.” 7:02:48 PM 11/09/05 that would be too cool... “but not in the cards. I'm looking to come to Sante Fe in February over Presidents Day weekend. I'm thinking of bring either the pack or the Litespeed. What would be your advice?” 7:05:00 PM 11/09/05 “pretty chilly in Santa Fe then. I will XC skiing in Feb. Winter/snow camping conditions in the Sangre de Christos or most of the NM mountains at that time.” 7:07:36 PM 11/09/05 7:10:47 PM 11/09/05 thanks... “I'll play it by ear and be prepared for whatever. I may bring the bike and pick up snowshoes and base camp somewhere and just bring a truckload of fire wood. I'll see. I'll give ya a shout if you'd like, maybe you can come play for a weekend or a day.” 12:43:35 AM 11/12/05 “Definitely! check out Hyde Memorial Park if you want to car base camp. Drive in, low/no use in winter. Close to Santa Fe ski area (Windsor Trail head for snow shoeing into Pecos Wilderness), good bicycle ride from Santa Fe to Tesuque, and beyond probably, near Santa Fe.” 9:34:01 AM 11/12/05 fabulous... “thank you!” 8:50:15 PM 11/13/05 Bicycle Mania “ABQ is going for broke, I think I went to an annoucement last night at a local bike/running/ski/swimming/fitness store. Ned Overland and former NM Gov Gary Johnson (triathlete, climbed Everest..) Red and Green Enchiladas, New Mexican beer and wine, bicyle giveaway contest, sale prices and a band. They were celebrating big time. Not only expanding their store but... Veloport City owned, to be operated by local NFP, with backing by Wachovia Sec. and others, Threshold Sports rumored to be in big time. Covered BMX race track, only the second in the country. Covered Velodrome. Training facilities Pro Cycling Tour Road Race ala Philly or San Fran Grand Prix in mid Sept 2006 World BMX Championships 2006 Belgian developmental team to train in ABQ. Chihauhau Velodrome and Mexican National Team commit to partnership with ABQ to promote cycling. $22 M annual to ABQ economy. Specialized to donate bikes for youth cycling program. Bad news for me was how much I spent on winter cycling/cross country ski gear. On sale though. ;-D last edited: 12/09/05 6:54:11 PM” 6:53:01 PM 12/09/05 Pthman.. “I'm right with you on the winter cycling spending spree...and now I can't even ride now cause of a hyperextended knee. BUT>>>I got what I need and will be back when I'm back...” 12:06:41 PM 12/10/05 “There is always "one more thing" to buy. Had a pretty nice 77 mile ride Saturday. Here is a VR of the high-point of my route, Mt. Soledad, above La Jolla: http://geography.berkeley.edu/personalpages/l_bennett/BennettVR/HTML/West/SanDiego/SoledadM.html When the ocean is on the left side in the VR, and you're looking north, that's the direction I live. I circled around this particular mountain and came up from the south. The major freeway is Interstate 5, and the body of water down south is Mission Bay, where Sea World is.” 12:46:21 AM 12/13/05 hey justin “nice shot.” 12:57:45 AM 12/15/05 “Yo Stikmon, I didn't actually create that VR. Just did a search and found it on someone's site. You're right though, it's cool. Rode 95 miles today. Came about as close as you can get to experiencing the perfect ride....if it wasn't for the one flat tire I got, Cool and cloudy here this weekend in San Diego, but that's the kind of riding weather I like. The legs felt strong all day so I just kept hammering. Getting back into the hills and canyons, and it feels great...” 1:02:33 AM 12/18/05 “How do you keep your ears from freezing off your body when peddling in the cold? My ear canals get extremely sore.” 11:11:16 AM 12/20/05 “I wear a skullcap or a balaclava under my helmet” 7:24:24 AM 12/21/05 “I'm riding indoors on the bike trainer. If it would just get over 15 degrees! Funny how everything get's uncomfortable faster on the bike inside. Maybe it's because you don't have any scenery. TV doesn't count.” 8:33:57 AM 12/21/05 “It’s just like the treadmill. You’d think that getting to watch tv at the same time would actually make it fun but it still sucks. Let me know if ya need a Desitin Cabana Boy for those uncomfortable pains D. LOL!” 8:40:42 AM 12/21/05 “Holy Cow, just got back from a one hour spin session at my buddies and it was AWESOME! I need a bike trainer for sure. We did some intervals (speed, resistance and standing), burned 975 "rode" 22 miles. I had a puddle of sweat under me when I finished. Great time!!!!” 7:18:13 PM 1/19/06 “Trainers can be a good workout because you don't get a rest like you would on a bike going downhill. They can be boring though. If you get a trainer protect it from sweat. Sweating all over it can rust it.” 7:32:00 PM 1/19/06 “richb, I can see how they'd get boring, kinda like a treadmill. But when the tour de Lance is on I could ride with him LOL.” 5:08:33 AM 1/20/06 “If you really want to make it interesting get a set of rollers instead of a trainer :) Just make sure you have plenty of room...just in case you happen to ride off of them.....not that I've ever done that or anything!! lol” 5:51:57 AM 1/20/06 “I have rollers and I found the safest way to ride on them is between a doorway so you can catch yourself if you do start to roll off. Rollers don't stress the bike frame out and help develop a smooth pedal stroke.” 6:52:04 AM 1/20/06 Jump to Page << prev
