Low 50's, moderate breeze and sunny. Two, hour long rides in one week. I've think I'm coming out of the winter blahs. 16mph average on both.

I should have been XC skiing for the past two months, but nooo.....

Winter is worthless without snow.

Here's hoping for Boise or Spokane! Good for both!

dhutch, it must take a good video or music to do the trainer. I never could stand it.

Yeah, I have some Charmicheal training tapes or I watch Eco Challenges and Primal Quests or one of my races on dvd. Still close to unbearable but it's worth it when the weather changes.

Hope for something with the best of both worlds eh?!

Friday night...
1 hour on the trainer. Jammed to Natalie Merchant. I'd rather have been outside, but at 8:00pm, too late to go out. I'll ride inside again today, while watching the olympics.

Can't wait to ride daily in the openness.

Tour de Palm Springs
Rode this century with my brother, who is down visiting, in 5:55. Super slow start due to the enormous amount of riders, but still managed a decent time. They changed the course a bit this year, and it took us over some seriously bad pavement. So rough in fact that my brother's handle bars loosened up a little.

A guy went down in the group we were riding with – he hit a baseball-sized rock that blew his tire out, and then he went down, sliding quite aways. Terrible to see, but I think he just got some road rash.

The ride is getting a little sketchy with so many people, and the numerous stretches of rough road add to the danger when you're riding in a pack trying to avoid pot-holes.

Under 6 is impressive (heck, any century time is impressive LOL) I hope thr guy who went down is okay. Road rash is awful stuff.

Amgen Tour of California
I drove to Redondo Beach Sunday morning to watch the final stage of this brand new 8 stage tour. It was fun to see so many of the top cyclists in the world in person. These guys haul! They rode the 76 mile course in 2h 50m.

Did Hincapie wind up winning the stage? I was watching one of the stages on ESPN the other day. Pretty grueling hill climb.

I can't wait for it to get warm out here. I'm going stir crazy putting in all my time on the trainer.

No, Hincapie didn't win the stage. T-Mobile’s Olaf Pollack won the stage, thus costing Hincapie the points jersey.

spring? South Dakota? hahahaha. A SD spring consists of temps hitting the 50's throught April then a blizzard in May. Maybe by June it will be warm.

Sorry bro! Guess I forgot. All the sunshine is affecting my memory! If you happened to catch any of the coverage on ESPN of the bike race, you could see the kind of weather we had all last week. Must've been like heaven for the Euro bike racers to come over here.

yea, no kidding. We actually hit 70 two days ago and it was pure heaven. Now it's back to the 30's and 40's with a chance of snow over the weekend.

I'll be riding in the Tour of Borrego this Saturday. It's a metric century out in the local desert. Today the temps were mid 70's out there. If the winds stay down it should be mild and plenty of sunshine.

29* funnish? yea okay

I've put about 5 hours on the traininer this month so far. Last weekend it was actually 40* and sunny and I could go outside to ride. Did right around 25 miles before calling it a day. Now we're socked in with snow again, so it looks like I'll be stuck on the trainer even longer.

yeah . . .funnish . ...as in: Just barely light enough so I didn't need the headlight . .cold enough so my fingers got thoroughly chilled working the presta valves, only one rider showing up, a strong headwind . ..he just tucked in behind me . ..i was getting buffeted about going . .oh about 14 mph on the flats or so .. .when he finally came around he realized what the hold up was . .. I think the thumbholes in my poly pro shirt cut the circulation off to my thumbs when my arms are outstretched b/c my thumbs got pretty numb . . .beautiful sunrise as we crested a hill heading east at about 6:00am . .then we went back downhill and the sun set . .

A ride that in the warmth of the height of the season takes about 1:15 or so took 1:30 or so . . .

that kind of funnish.

the ride is supposed to go out again tomorrow . . ..it is supposed to be colder, but without the wind.

I don't know why..
I waited this long to get a mountain bike...OMG, I had so much fun on it today...picked it up yesteday at REI in St Louis, and was on it this afternoon around my favorite walk around the small lake outside of town. It was a blast! I had Khatru on his extender leash, held in my hand and he ran next to me for the 2 laps that we did. almost an hour. sweet. I rode through my first mud puddle. Now THAT was fun.

I'm gonna really enjoy this bike. and then I came home washed the MB (Named: Orchrist) and got on the Lightspeed (Named: Anduril) and rode 8 miles.

This was a really fun day.

very different. I only have platform peddles so its regular peddling, and not clip in or cage style. I'll make a desision on peddles later on.

My lake ride is...
2.27 miles. Last night, I rode my road bike 9 miles, 38 minutes. got home and loaded the Marin mtn bike up, grabbed Khatru and off we went for our first week day lake trail ride. We did the loop in 17 minutes. I rode, Khatru ran. Our average was 8.7 mph and at one point we were both doing 10.5mph for a long stretch. this will really help get him in shape for canoe season, when he again, will run and swim 19 mile weekends.

Plus, its gonna get me in great shape too. Between the bike riding(s) and yoga, I hardley miss backpacking...NOT. I can't wait to hit trail again next season in the fall. I'll be in much better shape for the time off.

sounds like a good ride. stikmon.I just got my bike form the shop anfd have yet to ride it. Its an amazingly well cobbled mess of parts, a Giant NRS full suspension frame (used) mavic 117 tubeless rims (used 2x) new headset, bottom bracket, my old Pilot front fork, new shimano xt front derailleur, new avid bb7 disc brakes, old levers. Cobbled indeed. Gonna ride monday for sure, I wish sooner.

birch...
I've got the same rims. Rox Shock Judy forks, hard tail rear. She (aren't all bikes a she?) is a slick ride. Deore rear and Alivio front derailers, both Shimano.

I just wish I had another human to ride with. Its tough being the only bike rider in a town of 10K + people. I sort of stick out. If I wore camo spandex, I'd be the most popular person in Kennett.

Have great fun on your re-worked steed.

I started cycling with a local club in August. Every Saturday they lead group rides of varying distances, and they call them "no drop" rides, which means they wait for you if you fall behind. This past Saturday (before I got sick) I did about a 30-35 miler, climbing from sea level up to around 1500'. Coming back down was a little harrowing, since I haven't ridden hills in a while, so I was the one they had to stop for (I can hold my own on the ups and flats). But it's a fun group with nice people, and great exercise.

OK, I downloaded the GPS data into TOPO! and have the real route info. The total distance was about 32 miles. The main climb was about 1400 feet over 7 miles. We eventually climbed another 200 feet to a little over 1600. Whew!

Ouch! I got hit by a car today! A kid pulled into me going for a parking spot. I went over the hood and landed on my shoulder. I'll go see if there's serious damage tomorrow. I don't think there is but it hurts like hell.

I've often thought riding on the road with cars was stupid and way more dangerous than anything else I do...

The front wheel is bent out of shape. It's a beater and I was going to replace the wheels anyway.

Right now I'm trying to self-medicate enough to sleep. I really don't think there's any serious tendon or bone damage since there aren't any mobility issues. But I hit the pavement harder than a 48 yr old dude should. While I'm really happy things held up so well, it's really painful.

I'm glad you're OK man. So are you getting that new wheel on their dime now? I Last month's Bicycle magazine had a good article on insurance and who covers what and when.

glad you are ok. you should go to a doctor and get checked out, especially if you are in a lot of pain. the kids insurance will cover it. they should also fix your bike.

I got a case number and all that and the kid is insured. I'll be pounding on the doc's door when they open this morning. At the scene I was looked over by paramedics and waved off an ambulance. I strongly considered going to the ER but thought it would be a waste of a Sunday evening just to get an over-priced x-ray.

Thanks for listening to me whine...

dang man, hope your ok. I had to hit the brakes Thursday am on my way to work as a guy turned into a driveway right in front of me. Dude passes me and then immediately turns in front of me! Totally killed my momentum on a slight uphill grade.

When i was a kid (about 8 or so???) the same thing happened as a little old lady turned in front of me while I was flying downhill on my way home from swim lessons. I hit her rear quarter panel and bounced over the handlebars, off her trunk and slid to the pavement. Being 8 of course I just bounced up and since it was in the 70's the bike was indestuctable.

Be careful out there Toejam, hopefully just bruses not major damage.

I took my family for a ride at LSU's campus a few months ago and was scared to death. It is crazy that you can't safely ride a bike on a COLLEGE CAMPUS without the fear of getting run over. I will only ride bike paths with the family from now on. The road, any road is not safe now.
