Chair SuggestionsView MessagesDon't feel bad Pixie “I'm 32 - bad back, bad feet, bad ankles. You'd think I wouldn't be out on the trail. But, the right equipment and some Alleve and I'm good to go. Oh, and I'm almost 1/2 gray on my head, too. Call me Old Fogey.” 1:13:06 PM 8/24/04 techntrek “Golly. I DON'T feel bad. You are a mess buddy! Glad you are taking care of yourself and still getting out there. : )” 1:26:14 PM 8/24/04 “Me too!” 1:38:25 PM 8/24/04 “For me the Slinglight is it. After several weeks into my John Muir Trail trip. It was still feeling really good at the end of the day. I use it on weekend trips even now.” 1:41:48 PM 8/24/04 “Laqtis: A BIG thank you to you! Can't wait to do a trip with you. WoundedKnee: Thanks for the offer. I will try yours out the next time we bp together. Well, maybe we'll see each other sooner at the next party. ;) BTW, I still have that article on Wilco for you. It's been in my gear bin since spring. Pixie: Thanks for the link. And to the rest of you: Thanks. (I am sooooo looking forward to Christmas this year. I have never before had any "requests" when I was asked for suggestions. I only hope that my family actually pays attention to what I say...sling-light, sling-light, sling-light)” 3:18:12 PM 8/24/04 Go without a chair? “I'd have to go without a sleeping pad, then! http://www.pacoutdoor.com/index.cfm?action=product&productID=23&groupID=9&familyID=1 Sometimes, I even take the kitchen table: http://www.rei.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?productId=8961405&storeId=8000&catalogId=40000008000&langId=-1&color=&img=/largeimages/668820.jpg&view=large Comfort is important.” 3:19:25 PM 8/24/04 “You ultralight people are freaking me out!!! It's called backpacking, you're supposed to carry #&%!$!!! Unless you've got a bad back or hanging off the side of El Cap, grow some glutes and stuff that sack! (j/k, of course!) I've got the Crazy Creek Power Lounger and I might trade it for the regular Crazy Creek chair but I like the fact that I have a chair and a sleeping pad... and this way, you can have friends over for the night!!! You can use the Lounger/Chair for a second sleeping pad too! For once, Scorchy is right and you guys are all wrong!!! nyah!” 3:32:07 PM 8/24/04 “So when your friends come over, are you gonna make them sit in a chair all night? They don't even get to crawl into your tent with you? Do you carry an extra bag for them, too?” 3:37:23 PM 8/24/04 “Look, if you can't carve a new chair everytime you need one then you should just forget it.” 6:01:19 PM 8/24/04 “I ordered a slinglight. Opened the box in my office and said to myself. No way this is going to hold me. I set up the chair on my flat carpet and started to ease into it. I underestimated how low the chair was to the ground and lost my balance. Splat. Broke the chair before I ever sat in it. Called the company and got a list of reasons why it was my fault. I held the hard line and was told I would get a refund. We will see.” 10:49:32 PM 1/12/05 “Might need to look at other chairs huh?” 10:52:26 PM 1/12/05 “I have been using a pad or a dove stool. I could bend the sling light with one hand. It might work if you weigh 100 pounds, but not 200.” 10:56:58 PM 1/12/05 “Keep in mind I was on a flat carpeted floor. On uneven terrain this chair has no hope.” 10:58:53 PM 1/12/05 bbw “Sue the company for tons of money, that way you can quit and backpack all you want! Hope you didn't get hurt.” 11:03:04 PM 1/12/05 “best camp chair goin is the thermarest thingy. puts you on the ground, but your insulated and it takes the pressure off your back.” 11:04:27 PM 1/12/05 whats a slinglight chair... “post a link. for backpacking I use a my 3/4 thermarest LE with the chair kit. acts as tent pad and chair. for canoeing I use my full 27" wide and 3" thick thermarset guide as my lazyboy recliner while paddlin. then use it as raft while playin in the water, then as tent pad to sleep on. and I also bring an aluminum chair in a bag thingy's to sit in around the fire. SnowNymph has a really cool chair that she straps to the outside of her pack, but that thing is like $100.00! but it is nice.” 11:04:36 PM 1/12/05 “The only two chairs I EVER hear anyone talk about is the thermarest, and the CrazyCreek.. and the relative merits of each. I don't ever hear any others (Slinglight for example) ever mentioned. SonicJill in her CrazyCreek --> http://www.anycities.com/user/towndawg/vaganza.htm (Scroll down.. halfway.. right side of webpage.) last edited: 1/13/05 6:49:16 AM” 6:47:37 AM 1/13/05 “Stick I think that is the Sliglite that Nymph has. REI has one that is simular to it that is even lighter I think.” 8:32:26 AM 1/13/05 “I've had the Sling Light for several years now, and used a friends several times in the 80's. Never seen one break. I'm 185 and my chair is rock-solid - they claim it holds something like 250. Most comfortable camp chair I have used. Weighs the same as the Therm-a-rest chair conversion system, but no worries about getting a hole OR having to disassemble the thing to go to sleep. I do not recommend the headrest attachment, I found I never used it so don't take it on the trail anymore. http://www.slinglight.com/” 8:32:52 AM 1/13/05 “First really negative review of the slinglight I've read. Thanks for posting, bbw. Food for thought. The company not wanting to stand behind it's product is a more serious problem. last edited: 1/13/05 8:38:44 AM” 8:35:59 AM 1/13/05 “The weight is sweet.. I won't argue there.. but 99.95?.. hehe.. I'll stick to the aforementioned.” 8:46:39 AM 1/13/05 “Ruby: I was using the thermarest kit at Morgan-Monroe. I like it so far.” 8:49:59 AM 1/13/05 “The T-Rest chairs are great if ya have the wider pads. I had one for the UL and hated it. It gave no back support and hurt worse than sitting on the ground.” 8:52:26 AM 1/13/05 “I just sit on the ground” 9:02:05 AM 1/13/05 “I have a Thermarest sport seat and I try to find a tree to put my back against.” 9:05:06 AM 1/13/05 “Just a thought, but could the sheer mass of your now public hemi's have altered your center of gravity to the extent that you were actually thrown into the chair with an untoward velocity? It's not the chairs fault?” 9:16:02 AM 1/13/05 “Good point, Nimble. More Food for Thought. ;-)” 9:16:59 AM 1/13/05 “I have the Slinglight. After a lot of use the material ripped. I bought a second one. That one ripped after a few years of use (remember, I go every weekend when I'm not snowboarding so that's a lot of use). I contacted the company and they replaced and tuned up both chairs for $25 each. The first chair was from the early 80s. Once you get used to sitting in the slinglite you don't have to think about it. I love mine!” 3:08:12 PM 1/13/05 It has to be your fault see: “ ”3:13:35 PM 1/13/05 “What chair at REI? I just tried to find it and don't see anything below 3 lbs. Excluding Therm-a-rest type chairs. If you find it let me know.” 7:35:54 AM 1/14/05 “this is the chair i use and i absolutely love it. u can fold it in half for easy storage in the backpack and it's sooo comfy. for only 12.99 you can't go wrong! http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?memberId=12500226&productId=3525398 last edited: 1/14/05 7:43:58 AM” 7:43:36 AM 1/14/05 “Techntrek, I don't see it on their website either, maybe they don't carry it anymore? It looks just like a slinglight except it's collapsable. I tried one out at a scratch-n-dent sale a couple of weeks ago. I didn't think it would hold me and I don't weigh anywhere near 200 lbs. It did and was quite comfy...until I let go of the place where the piece was missing. It wasn't fixable so I passed on it. I think I'd rather stick with my stadium seat anyway. More versatile.” 8:27:44 AM 1/14/05 “Drat. Because my only complaint with my slinglight is that you can't fold it. Now that I've gone lightweight its almost bigger than my pack (Golite Team). A hinge on either side would work wonders. I've thought about modifying mine but I really don't want to screw it up.” 8:32:01 AM 1/14/05 “I couldn't find it either. I had seen it in a catalog this year. Maybe they didn't sell well enough.” 8:50:44 AM 1/14/05 “This one actually disassembled and stuffed into a small stuff sack. It was kind of a pain to put together. I even had to follow the instructions. I never have to follow instructions, lol. But I guess with repetition it would become habit.” 9:27:17 AM 1/14/05 “Was it a stool? I found a 1-pound stool at REI a couple of years ago that folded up into a pouch. Was only about 8 inches long and about 2 inches thick when folded. Think it cost me about $16. They don't have it anymore. It didn't give back support and was too high off the ground for cooking or eating so that's when I got the chair.” 9:41:29 AM 1/14/05 “No, it was definitely not a stool. Once assembled it looked identical to a slinglight.” 9:42:43 AM 1/14/05 “I know the chair you mean. Shoot, I can't remember what it's called. I dig around.” 12:20:46 PM 1/14/05 Found it! “trailsling REI doesn't carry this model, but they carry other chairs by GCI and will order it. (I've inquired before.) It weighs more than the Sling Light, but folds down to the size of a Nalgene bottle.” 12:44:23 PM 1/14/05 Aha! “That's it. They used to have it listed on their website. They also had it in the spring catalog last year, maybe they will again this spring?” 12:48:40 PM 1/14/05 “Thanks for the info. Now I need to decide if the extra 14 oz. is worth the foldable form-factor.” 1:10:17 PM 1/14/05 “skullcap, where do you see it on their website? Exactly techntrek. I've been deliberating over these two chairs for a long, long time.” 1:26:38 PM 1/14/05 “It's not on their website anymore. I last saw it on there several months ago, I'm not sure when they took it off.” 1:36:55 PM 1/14/05 “I know it's been brought up before, but the Slinglight is actually $79. It's $99 if you want the headrest, which I've always heard is unnecessary. I would like to see a picture of the Slinglight folded up and attached to someone's pack. Snow Nymph? Help a sista out?” 1:43:23 PM 1/14/05 “You are right, Ruby. I wish I hadn't purchased the headrest. I have a shot of it on my pack, but its at home.” 2:02:32 PM 1/14/05 “You could lash that to the outside of your pack Ruby, can't you? Just sit on the ground with me.” 2:05:38 PM 1/14/05
