Chair SuggestionsView MessagesRecommendations, please : ) “I am tired of sitting on the ground or a log or getting my Thermarest dirty. I would like to hear what your suggestions would be on a camp chair or chair kit. Light is good. I have an old Thermarest already to work with a kit. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll be getting a newer, lighter pad as well. Yes, I have searched old threads, too. Some of them are getting old, so I thought I would start a new thread. What do y'all think?” 7:16:27 PM 8/23/04 Settle for nothing less than the best... “Behold: ”7:20:23 PM 8/23/04 bit! You are silly “My vote is for the slinglight. I too am in the market for a chair. But the $99 price tag has me waiting a little. I've sat in my bro's chair kit, but it doesn't get ya off the ground when it's really dusty.” 7:22:08 PM 8/23/04 Pixie loves me... “She bought me one of those light weight gardening/weeding kneeling pads! Light and comfy! :)” 7:22:11 PM 8/23/04 And pixie... “He can't ever remember how to put it together! :p” 7:22:42 PM 8/23/04 “I like the therma rest chair kit. I doesn't get you off the ground, but it keeps your buns dry. keeps your pad clean too.” 7:26:40 PM 8/23/04 “I second the TAR chair kit...keeps you off the ground and dry, protects your pad, and has a back you can lean in.” 7:30:15 PM 8/23/04 The hell with backpacking “Man i am buying that nice chair the bit posted and not leaving my house ever again!!!” 7:31:10 PM 8/23/04 “I was thinking of one of the chair kits, but when I looked at them at Campmor, they have at least 4 versions. How do I know which one I want? Uh, Bit, how much does that one weigh? And can I strap it to the outside of my pack? I'd love one of those slinglites, too. I'll put it on my Christmas list.” 7:31:43 PM 8/23/04 “Ruby - This is the one I would get. I have an older model of that same lite kit. Only 10 ounces. If you win the lotto, get the slinglite.” 7:37:51 PM 8/23/04 “Get the 10 ounce version as SS suggests. The heavier one isn't worth the money or weight.” 7:41:27 PM 8/23/04 “I had a Trest chair and couldn't use it because it didn't give enough support in the back. But I have a freekishly long torso. For just a few ounces more I carry a 16 oz. hammock. It makes a great chair and you can stretch out and swing in the breez and sleep in it. I can always find a couple trees near the fire ring.” 7:44:40 PM 8/23/04 “nigal? freakish? NOOO!!!” 7:56:29 PM 8/23/04 “i don't like the therma rest chair kits... for one, when you're breaking or doing lunch while still on the trail, it's a complete hassle to set it up. I use this 22 oz is worth it to me to be able to be comfortable. it's one of my 2 luxury items (the other is a blow up pillow!) and i don't ever regret buying it. i fold mine in half and stick it either in my pack or attached to the outside.” 8:04:00 PM 8/23/04 “and it's cheap!” 8:04:10 PM 8/23/04 “Scorch makes a valid point, but thats twice the weight of my chair kit (not incl the pad)” 8:07:14 PM 8/23/04 “when you're breaking or doing lunch while still on the trail, it's a complete hassle to set it up. ScorchFire 08:04:00 PM 08/23/04 unless your going to sit there for hours why would you even break out any chair to sit on. Geesh if you can't sit on the ground to eat lunch or take a break stay home..I mean that in the nicest way :)” 8:08:59 PM 8/23/04 “lmao! easy Ewker! lol.” 8:09:51 PM 8/23/04 “Thanks for the help so far, guys. Roam, what model do you have? Don't some of the TRest kits allow you to not have to take it apart or something like that?” 8:14:25 PM 8/23/04 “damn, ewker. sorry i don't like to sit on the muddy ground when i'm hiking in the rain!!” 8:15:22 PM 8/23/04 “This is similiar to what I carry: camp chair I have a different brand and it sure didn't cost as much. I have to have legs though or I might as well be leaning against a tree.” 8:26:17 PM 8/23/04 “Depending on who you are hiking with, you can try to pick the biggest man there and sit on his lap. That would be very comfortable, and you wouldn't have to carry him to the campsite, lol:)” 8:28:25 PM 8/23/04 “see Scorchy, lipstick hiker knows how it is done ;)” 8:33:43 PM 8/23/04 “i like my chair better.. it's less perverted : P” 8:35:14 PM 8/23/04 “Ruby - I have a therm a rest chair *kit* that I will give to ya. email me for details.” 9:50:07 PM 8/23/04 “Holy Crap. I didn't check the seconds, but without looking I'll bet money it was fast!.. Good image, bitpusher! (sorry.. just now saw it.)” 9:59:22 PM 8/23/04 “bout 2.5 mins.. hehe... not your BEST time.. ;)” 9:59:47 PM 8/23/04 “Laqtis, thanks. You have email. And BTW, I have finally met some of "you Michigan people" on the N. Manitou trip last weekend. Good times.” 10:03:12 PM 8/23/04 “Hey, I'm handicapped, I'm at home on dialup...” 10:10:52 PM 8/23/04 “The slinglite rocks if you can afford it. I use a Thermarest ultimate chair kit. It is the ultimate in comfort. You leave the cover on all the time and put in the stays to make a comfy chair. It takes a few minutes to set up, but you don't have to stuff it into anything.” 10:14:59 PM 8/23/04 “Phil, that's what I was thinking of. What's the weight? Is it more than the other suggested model? If so, is it worth the extra weight in your opinion? And I'm just curious, does anyone know how much does that slinglite weighs?” 10:20:11 PM 8/23/04 “I have the Therm-a-Rest® Lite 20 Easy Chair kit. (the one SS linked to) I like it. I really like this one: Therm-A -Rest® Ultimate Chair Kit 20, but it's a bit heavier. Oh...Link” 10:21:53 PM 8/23/04 “Since we're on the subject (sort of) and since mom has asked me what might be on my Christmas wish list... What are your sleeping pad recommendations? I currently have an old full-size TRest. I'm not sure of its weight, but I'd like to get something lighter.” 10:22:41 PM 8/23/04 “
href="http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?memberId=12500226&productId=39058945">This is the one I have but you are tall, so that wouldn't work. I do use a small href="http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?memberId=12500226&productId=10621715">thermarest pad too, both of them together work fine for me. Hmm, kinda like a fullsize now, huh? but I can leave the short pillow like pad at home if I feel I don't need it. I use my backpack as a pillow. works great for me. ” 10:30:55 PM 8/23/04 “Thanks. I do want a full-size pad. I'm tall, and I like the insulation under my feet as they get cold at night. Don't care about a pillow. I sleep on my tummy.” 10:37:57 PM 8/23/04 “Don't carry a chair. Just wait till someone gets up and take theirs. Works for me.” 10:40:24 PM 8/23/04 “Ruby, I went with the thin lighter thermarest and ended up going back to the standard one. I felt every pebble under me. wd, almost everytime I get up, someone is sitting in my Sling-lite! That is my one luxury for these trips!” 10:44:04 PM 8/23/04 “WD, that's what I have done in the past. But I don't want people PO'd at me. :) I might need them to help stave off the bears later. Or more likely, to share their booze. ;)” 10:56:50 PM 8/23/04 “If they are already tanked up then that makes it even easier. Ya grab the chair and go to the other side of the fire. They get confused and either go to bed or they steal somebody elses chair.” 11:02:51 PM 8/23/04 “Note to self: Carry chair everywhere I go when Walkindude is around.” 11:04:07 PM 8/23/04 “on wear it around like dhutch did in Florida” 11:30:18 PM 8/23/04 “I've taken to the bearikade cannister as a seat. I'm usually carrying it anyway, may as well put it to double duty. My pack has a removable pad that I use to provide a bit of cushion. Steve” 11:52:51 PM 8/23/04 “I used to carry one of those Crazy Creek chairs but they are bulky and hard to get to quickly. I got one of those inflatable butt pads click on linkwhich I keep in the lid of my pack so I can pull it out for breaks in cold or wet weather. I thought I would miss having a backrest but I don't.” 7:18:12 AM 8/24/04 “I evaluated the pad kits but they weight just as much as my SlingLight (about a pound each), don't get you off the ground, and you might puncture your pad - which could become a survival issue in the cold. I like being able to unclip my chair in 10 secs for lunch, etc. BTW, it isn't $99 if you don't get the headrest attachment. It is only $79. And don't get the headrest, either. I found I rarely used it in camp so I leave mine home now. http://www.slinglight.com/” 8:07:58 AM 8/24/04 8:54:54 AM 8/24/04 “"unless your going to sit there for hours why would you even break out any chair to sit on. Geesh if you can't sit on the ground to eat lunch or take a break stay home..I mean that in the nicest way :)" That's what I was thinking. LOL! Before I got the P-2 pack I'd just throw my pack down and sit on that.” 9:01:35 AM 8/24/04 “Hey Ruby, you can try mine out if you want to see if you like it. It's the sleeve that you put your thermarest in and it turns into a chair.” 9:09:00 AM 8/24/04 “Ewker/Nigal - bad lower back is the reason for me. That drove getting my pack weight down dramatically and dictates that for anything longer than a 10 minute break I need to use the chair. Haven't been able to sit for long stretches w/o back support for many years.” 10:04:57 AM 8/24/04 I'm with techntrek “I know I'm only 33, but sometimes out on the trail I feel very old and stiff. After carrying a pack around, I would really like to rest my back by reclining in some way. And Di is thankful for her little pad, but I use an identical one and my boney butt feels pretty sore anyhow.” 1:08:38 PM 8/24/04 Ruby “Another option is the GCI sling chair: http://geartrends.com/cgi-bin/geartrends/xdpy/pd/01035/ It's a little heavier (by about a 1/2 pound) than the slinglight, but it folds down to a smaller size.” 1:11:42 PM 8/24/04
