Who's still in for the ADK Buttkicker?

“Artex won't be making it, but he passed the trip over to myself, but this is only for this year.

Who is still going on this trip?”

“I'm a maybe right now”

“Is this a private trip, I forget!”

“I'm sort of in. I'll probably do something similiar to what I did a few weeks ago. Sleep at the TH Ftiday night and be on the trail at first light.

My itinerary might be different though since I did some of those peaks a few weeks ago. I'm kinda leaning towards Colden, Tabletop and Phelps.”

“i'm thinking about going up thurs. night to TH for an early jump on friday am.

what's everyone elses plan?”

“I'll have to work on Friday so I plan on heading straight to Upper Works from work. Hopefully I'll only have to hike a few miles in the dark.”

“I'm hoping to stop at EMS tonight to find out if they rent bear canisters and how much it costs.”

maybe i could stop by your house on the way up thurs. nite and carry it in?

if not, you might walk in friday evening to find me fending off a pack of bears with a stick.”

“Sacco, I'll be picking up a canister Thursday after work.”

who'll protect me if zac starts feeling a little... frisky?

stoopid and fritz? you guys still in? what's your plans?”

“I rented a bear canister at he Mountain shop in Keene Valley a couple of years ago.

They werre closed when I dropped it off, but I hid it around back and then called them and told them where to find it.

I pack with a a small mountainsmith pack and I was a real #&%!$ getting that thing into it.


I had to strap all my other gear outside my pack. I looked like a garage sale walking down the path.

They make nylon bags for the bear canisters that have webbing on them so you can lash it tothe outside of your pack. I thought about getting one of those ($20 or so) and then just continuing to rent the canisters. Hasn't been an issue because I haven't been back in the ADK for a couple of years.”

“The guy at EMS laughed at me when I told him I was putting it in a golite pack.”

“I laugh at Zac cuz I can. I don't need a golite reason.

I will most likely be there but I don't have a game plan yet. I'll talk about with Zac when I see him this weekend. (after I stop laughing at him)”

I would seriously consider options for the cansiter. Get an extra large CHEAP stuff sack and some nylon webbing. Does your Go-lite hae any exterior lashing points . . .daisy chain or loops??

Securing the cansiter outside the pack could be a pain with webbing that ins't tied direclty to the sack . .maybe cust holes in a it and thread the webbing through???



Just remember DON'T LEAVE THE CANSITER IN THE SACK AT CAMP. THE BEAR CAN'T GET PURCHASE ON THE CANISTER TO CARRY IT OFF, HE CAN JUST KICK IT AROUND. IF YOU LEAVE IT IN NYLON WITH STRAPS . ..HE'LL PICK IT UP AND YOU'LL NEVER SEE IT AGAIN.”

zac, does your cam take pics at night?”

“It has a night function on it. I'll also have it at the ready for my hike in when I go past the cables between Flowed lands and Lake Colden. I think this is the one that the bears were climbing trees and clothslining food bags last year.

Lee thanks for the suggestion. I have a nylon bag with straps on it that might work.”

“It looks like right now we have Pennsy, Sacco, Stoopid, and myself going on this trip. Is there anyone else? Please speak up now.”

“zac, looks like i'm going up early friday with stoopid - 'round about 7ish or so.

what would be a good time for me to stop by in the morn. ?”

I'm normally out the door to get to work at 6:50 every morning. If you stop sometime between 6:30 and then I can give you the canister.”

“giddy yup.

wait are you gonna come to the door in just a towel ?”

“I'll take the towel off before I open the door.”

Are you guys going to meet me at the Flowed lands on Friday night? My best guess is I'll be getting to the trailhead between 6:30 & 7. I figure it will take me about an hour and a half to get to the pond.”

“will wait for ya at flowed lands between 7*45-8*45 then.

i'll take a cheese danish, a spanish omlette, and some home fries.

also, i'll take my coffee strong. and black. like my women.”

“Oh I plan to have my camera at the ready to catch some bear acrobatics as they try and raid the bear bag cables.”

“if stoopid and i get in pretty early on fri chances are extremely good on a lean-to, eh?”

“That's the plan. I want to try for one of the ones just the other side of Colden Dam. That should put us at a good spot to start the climb up Mount Colden on Saturday.”

“Hey Zac - I'm gonna bugger out of here early today, and probably get to the trailhead between 5 and 6 tonight. Maybe I'll wait for you. If not, I'll leave the time on the register and see you and the others at Flowed Lands or at camp.”
