I just came from the eye doctor, and it got me thinking. How many of you ultralighters choose specific frames to save weight? And yes, choosing contacts over glasses just to save weight means you are an addict.

I got these contacts called NIGHT AND DAY. they totally kick some major a55 i never have to take them out except for once every 2-3 months to put in a new pair.

I have had the pair i have on right now in for like 5 months but i have taken them out a few times i think i should switch them out soon!!!

Why would you take contacts and not glasses also?

I take both, I like to see after I take my contacts out.

I use light frames mainly because I don't like the way heavy frames feel day to day.

I have the FDA approved extendo-wear contacts. I bring a couple extras just in case.

Therefore/ergo/sum, no need for glasses.

Does this mean Matt can't see well right now? Just curious.

I do glasses. Heard too many complaints from folks with contacts while hiking--dirt/dust/etc. gets under the lens. Easier to deal with glasses.

I see better with glasses (vs contacts), and I've worn them so damn long that I'm just used to them.

I solved my foot problem by wearing trailrunners on my left foot and hiking boots on the left. To correct the ensuing balance problem I wear a monocle on my left eye and a contact in the right.

I'll eventually do laser - mostly for day-to-day benefits, but not having glasses on the trail will be a nice bonus. I wouldn't try contacts on the trail, too many things can go wrong in "normal" environments, let alone out there.

The laser thing scares the hell out of me. About 95% of my job involves the use of my eyes. I don't want to risk damaging them just so I don't have to wear glasses.

I've worn them since the 80's and have never lost one! And like I said, something happens on the trail, plop another one in.

What do you do if you break a lens of your glasses?

I prefer to cut my eye glasses weight in half. IN HALF! I wear a monocle. It’s lighter and way more sexy.

Roam
I had that same problem last year at Mt.Rogers. Fogging lenses, blowing rain, sleet and even some snow. I just took mine off and fumbled around half blind. That and getting mildly hypothermic almost ruined my day. I am thinking about the laser surgery, but with 2 kids in college, I just can't spend the money on myself right now.

I never equated the weight of glasses to backpacking, but in my last eye exam and inevitably purchase of new glasses I chose featherweights with smaller lenses. The difference in weight is dramatic, even though it is undoubtedly ounces or even fractions of an ounce. But I still don't see it as having a connection to hiking. The weight savings accrues every day.

They do have titanium frames now! Also on the issue of fogging, the lense cleaner called CAT CRAP really works. I just bought a new "tub" of it cause my dog ate my last one. I told the store clerk that my dog ate my cat crap!

My buddy Larry can't hike with glasses on because they always fog up or get sweaty. So he just takes them off. It's a lot of fun watching him though. Kinda like hiking with Mr. Mcgoo.

They make these little wipes that are treated to keep glasses from fogging up but I haven't told him about them cause it's too much fun watching him trip over ever stick and stump.

Rain-X
Treat your glasses with Rain-X and rain/fog, etc. won't be a problem. Sold in auto parts stores/ailses.

The product cat crap really does work. Only thing is, you need to apply it every day for the best results. It is a hideous green color, DK what it tastes like, you'll have to ask my dog. That mutt will eat anything!

I had laser correction done on my eyes about 10 years back. No problem at all.

I was wondering the same thing. What's the problem with contacts? Wash and sanitize your hands, bring an extra pair just in case, no problems. I also always bring a pair of glasses for after I take out my contacts.

I don't like wearing glasses when it rains or is foggy because the lenses have to be wiped all the time. And I find it nearly impossible to see while night hiking if I'm wearing glasses. Something about the glasses combined with my headlamp creates a glare or something.

Some day I hope to have the surgery. Maybe after I win the lottery.

My initial comments were more a jab at the ultralighters. I think aero and Wounded Knee have the right idea.

BTW, I did order some of the extremely light titanium frames, but not for backpacking reasons. I'm afraid they may be busted on trip.

I wear glasses to read when I cook on the trail. I have some of the titanium frames but I take my heavy duty frames that have been super glued back together.

One of the reasons I want to get laser surgery is so I don't have to fool with contacts. It's a plus not having to carry contacts, case, solution, and glasses on a trip.

I tried to get contacts once, but I never got over the "putting something in my eye" thing. I'm also cheap as hell and couldn't stand paying more for solution.

But really, I just like old school technology. My computer has a Pentium 1 with dial-in. I just got rid of cable and installed a cool amplified antenna on my TV. Old TVs are free nowadays. I've got a record player, too.
