“I have a child that is having their wisdom teeth taken out.

I am going to purchase some liquids and soft foods, but I never have had a tooth pulled so I am not sure what is best. Here is my list:

V-8
Tomato soup
Pudding
Freeze Pops (real question about these)
Romain Noodles”

you get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled at once - 2 were impacted (they had to use some sorta bone saw)- then come talk to me.”

Women have evolved physiologically to have a Lower Threshold for pain.

What this actually means is women stop feeling pain earlier than men.

This enables women to survive child birth.”

Really, you can eat almost anything. Just try to avoid tough or chewy meat or any food that requires lots of jaw action to chew.”

“Ruby speaks the truth - its not as bad as people make it out to be. All 4 of mine were impacted and I had stitches in my gums afterwards. Very little swelling and just a nice soreness.

But its not nearly as bad as people make it out to be.”

“Having my wisdom teeth out was the best surgery I ever had. I took those 6 little red pills and was out for the count. The only thing I remember during the surgery was some shot on the roof of my mouth and then all I did was go "oh", and fall back into la-la land. Afterwards, I slept and slept and the next day, I had very little pain and that night, I ate a cheeseburger from Burger Chef. Remember Burger Chef?”

ditto. and chicken broth with overcooked noodles to make them softer (the real small noodles, i can't remember the name of them right now). i got a 7-11 slurpee a few times too.. but u can't use a straw cause u can't suck (or smoke) until it's healed or you'll get dry socket.”

“That's right. I forgot about the sucking. Can't use a straw or smoke.

Whatever pain pills are prescribed, take them in anticipation of the pain. Don't wait until the pain happens. And be prepared to just let your child sleep for a couple days.

But as everyone says, it really isn't so bad. Nothing even close to childbirth. But having said that...when I had my wisdom teeth pulled, I took full advantage of the pain pills prescribed. When I went through labor both times, I took nary a pain pill or an epidural or a shot of anything.”

“What is a dry socket?

I may already have one of those.”

“I think it's when the blood clot that has formed in the space where the wisdom tooth had been gets dislodged and is removed, usually through the sucking motion. The empty space or socket is then "dry." That leaves you more vulnerable to infection and is painful because the protective clot is gone.

I've also heard of folks eating baby food for a week (pureed stuff). Lots of choices available like veggies, meats, etc.”

“I'm keeping my wisdom teeth just in case I need them when I'm old. But when a friend of mine had hers out she swore by the baby food deserts. She claimed they were the closest thing to heaven for the first three days afterward.”

“Good for you for sticking up for yourself, Sacco. I used to work in a delivery room in Japan back in the early '60's. There was a very wide swing in how individual women handled labor pain...just as there is with both genders and all pain. I really doubt that anyone who backpacks is much of a weenie.”

“I'm having three of mine out tommorow, I'm wondering about the anasthesia, the oral surgeon told me that I will be under, sorta. Apparently I'll be semi-conscious during the procedure, but I won't remember a thing afterwards. Anyone have any experience with this?”

i asked, and my dentist said no and just gave me locals.

“Bison, I was put under for mine. I would not want just a local. It was the best. My experiences with general anesthesia are good. It's like a good nap to me. Some people get nauseous as they wake up which is why they tell you to not eat or drink anything beforehand.”

Can't smoke for several days?

My daughter was a h.s. freshman when she had her wisdom teeth extracted by a very good oral surgeon. Pre-medication, Nitrous, the works. I was so envious, lol. She had no problems until the ride home. We lived in Virginia at the time, out in the country. My truck broke down about 3 miles from home and there we were, dad, broken down truck and a semi alert, drooling teeny bopper. I jumped in front of the first vehicle and fortunately it stopped and we were delivered safely home. Next day I traded in my old truck for something theoretically more reliable. Ahh, the golden memories.”

snake eyes would usually be winning, but then let storm shadow go. they had some sorta ninja code of honor thing going on.

with all the 80's fans around here i'm surprised no one has mentioned this stuff to ya before, snake eyes was one of the most popular characters on the show i think”

“When I had my wisdom teeth removed the surgeon stuck a needle in the IV, and said to count back from 100 and to tell him when I began to feel numb....being no dummy, I DID NOT tell him when the numbness set in...when I got to FFOUR FFOUR (44) he said..."You've had enough", laughed, and went to work...later he asked what I thought of the procedure, and I said it was interesting, to which he laughed and said "how would YOU know, you SNORED through half of it!"

That was my first experience with heavy drugs, and the pills for later? Little tiny yeller ones... he said to take them when I began to feel pain...yeah right...BEFORE I begin ya mean...so then, I would have helped some fool do a frontal lobotomy with a spoon I was so gone...

Do I have a low tolerance for pain?...YOU BET...I AM A WEENY...wanna make somthin of it?!!...LOL”

having a low tolerance of pain just means that you're more in tuned to what your body is saying.

“I had lousy dental insurance and a lousier oral surgeon when I got mine done. All four were impacted, I was awake and not nearly numb enough during the procedure. I personally think it was worse than birth. Birth is natural, having someone breaking apart your teeth while they're in your mouth and you are awake is not!
I was sent off afterwards and drove myself to Detroit (wrong way) before I realized I was going the wrong direction. I spent the next two days curled up on my bed in pain, got dry socket in all four holes and then spent the next week in agony. I got the shakes when I stopped taking my tylenol 3s.
It's all in your personal experience. Mine was awful, horendous and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.”

day 2 i went out with my bros down a 24 pack and went bowling finished bowling smoked some ganja and then went and saw cosmic haze!!!

Viq+ beer+ganja= feelin just fine actauly feelin damn good

I paid the next day though!!!!

“I absolutely HATE going to the dentist. Not because I’m scared but because I hate getting the dirty mouth lecture. Just clean my teeth and shut the hell MOM! I also get the “You’re 35. Why do you still have your wisdom teeth?” lecture too. I know they need to come out but I do hate the idea of them being pulled. There is NO way in HELL I’d be awake for that one.”

“I had 3 of mine pulled two days before Thanksgiving. I was out for it, all I remember was the warmth of the drugs going up my arm from the IV. I swelled up like a chimpmunk, bruised quite nicely, and ate mashed potatoes with little tiny bits of cut up turkey for Thanksgiving. Whatever pain pills the surgeon gave me made me sick to my stomach. It wasn't a fun week, being my fall break from college and all, but its over.”

“bison, you'll be fine. i had the local and don't remember a thing. i went into the waiting room and my mom was sittin there (she was my driver) and she asked how it went and i said "it was fine! they didnt' even put me under!" i was so stoned from the anesthesia and stuff i had no idea what i was talkin about.

the worst part was changing the gauze.

the best part was the percocets. share the wealth with me if u get them ; )

i smoked the next day. very little drags. try not to make the "o" face when u smoke or inhale too deeply, that's what causes the dry sockett.”

“Got there, Went over the procedure with the doctor. Waited in the room for a while, I guess they had another extraction to do first. They tried to sell me on having all four out, but it was kind of a weak sell. The surgeon explained that there was a less than 1% chance that a problem would develop with the upper right wisdom tooth. I said "No thanks, just take the three out." They put an IV cathter in arm, the surgeon grabbed three injection vials, I saw him start to inject the third one, the next thing I remember I was being walked to the recovery room. They gave me instructions on what to do when I got home and that was it. I had no idea the procedure even happen. And as a bonus I've haven't had a whole lot of pain so far. Seems like it really wasn't all that big a deal, as a matter of fact I think I'll go hiking Sunday.”
