Gear List!

Wow... this is my heaviest pack weight I've lugged around in quite a while! 3 days 2 nights and only about 3400ft of climbing and another 3200 ft of descent over 23 miles. In an attempt to not kill off my boss I'm lugging around my large dining fly and the stakes for it, my water filter, and the stove and fuel. Top that off with the additional weight of the Tarptent compared to my regular tarp setup and two sleeping pads I'm close to breaking 16lbs in base weight. That's close to what I take in the winter! (of course, my 20 degree winter bag is actually lighter then my 35 degree synthetic summer bag).

Anyhoo... just thought I'd try to interject a backpacking thread every now and then. You may now return to your regularly scheduled contemporary political and social banter ;)

Say that in the wrong forums (i.e. ultralight wanker forums) and you could get flogged!

lol

Actually it's been a while since I've done one myself. Part of it is I know what's in my pack.

What's a listerine pocket pack and why do you need shampoo?

I use the Backpacking gear weight calculator.

I like making gear lists because it keeps me organized and I don't find myself 10 miles into the woods and say to myself (crap, I forgot X, Y, and Z). I have 2-3 options on most types of gear and it helps me decide which ones I want to take on what trip and keeps me from getting confused and leaving something.

This is everything sans consumables (i.e. food and water and cigars and cigarettes and alcohol). I'm in the woods... I don't think the trees will mind much if I'm a little smelly.

I do use the no-rinse shampoo because I hate that greasy hair feeling. Nothing better then going to bed at night with a nice clean head of hair. I get it at REI. Good stuff!

The listerine pocket packs are those little lsd style dissolving mouth strips. Instead of toothpaste I put a little water in my mouth, throw in one of those strips and brush. I started doing this when I was in super ultralight freak mode with sub 10lb packs... and continue to do it to this day. Lighter and more versitile then just toothpaste. My mouth feels cleaner and I don't need to spit out the toothpaste goo.... which is good for LNT and good for not attracting strange animals who smell the sweet toothpaste goo you just spat on the ground.

Those days when my idea of shelter was a poncho and a couple of stakes. When I could get under 16lbs with food and water.

You shared your gear list with me awhile back and I've found it very helpful.

PS on the Listerine strips. I have a hard time rinsing toothpaste out of my brush with my precious filtered water. The strips make that a non issue. Excellent idea!

My 17.5lb winter list.

When I made the list my hiking partner was toting the stoves... so add a stove and you have my solo winter list good into the teens.

16? Holy sheeite!

I really don't have a gear list - I pretty much only have to empty out my gear closet. I pack the day before so I know I have everything. I write down whatever I might need...somewhere.

I haven't forgotten anything yet but I would like to work on th weight.

jeez!

why would i need a gear list? i know what i have and how much it weighs in my head. as long as my pack stays below 35-40 lbs that's fine with me.

I wish I could carry that much weight Scorch! Damn, first time out with Crazy Mike and 44 pounds got me my trail name.

I hope to get under 20 pounds for the first time for my Mammoth Cave trip.

I like that Listerine pocket strips idea! Thanks

Brushing your teeth
I forget what they are called but have you seen those new deals that fit on the end of your finger. You don't need water or tooth paste (it's built in). You just put one on your finger and rub your teeth with them. They work great. They have been using something similar in hospitals for years.

Good list. I saw the list before I read your comments DD, and was wondering about some of the extra stuff (like tarp and tarp tent) - but it all makes sense with your explanation. I've also gone a lot heavier than my solo base weight when taking someone who wasn't already into backpacking.

Yeah... I always take an extra large tarp when hiking w/ someone else. Mainly because it rains 99 times out of 100 when I go hiking... and it's vey nice having a large covering several people can hang out under instead of having to just go back and seek shelter in your tent.

Must Be An Alabama Winter
...I'm close to breaking 16lbs in base weight. That's close to what I take in the winter!

16# is my typical Summer base weight. Winter? Well, we're talking almost 30#.

It’s useless to compare pack weights unless you’re comparing the size of each person. You can’t compare the pack weight of someone who is 5’ 3” 105 lbs to some one who is 6’ 4” 230 lbs. A persons winter pack weight for hiking in a place such as Alabama isn’t going to be close to someone winter hiking in New England. It’s definitely an individual think.

I'll never understand why pack weights don't include food and the water you'll carry. You have to carry them, it's gonna be part of your packweight eventually.
Figuring out the lightest, most satisfying foods is part of packing too.

I had gear lists when I first started backpacking. I don't use them anymore.

Everyone has their preferences, antiperspirant and toothpaste are a must in my pack.

I once carried a 55 pound pack when I took a newbie in the woods. I decided I would never do that again -- carry 55 pounds that is. LOL If I have to carry that much extra stuff, the newbie will have cold food so that I don't have to carry stove and extra fuel. no more spoiling people.

wrong fullmoon.
the correct total weight for anyone, anywhere is exactly 21 pounds. here is my list from my last 3 day weekend. notice my total ended up a little short, so i threw in a 6 pack of yeungling to achieve the correct weight.

GG virga backpack 1.25
siltarp/Ti stakes/cord 1
fleece slpbag 1.6
thermo PL+Z-rest3/4 1.8
jetboil stove w/fuel 1
pur waterfilter 0.8
light pulsar 0.02

X-tra clothes
socks 0.1
1 underwear 0.1
wick shirt 0.1
bugsuit 0.2
nylon shorts 0.1
Crocs 0.5

MISC
knife, compass, TP, ect. 1.5

Food & Water 5.3

Total = 15.4
+ 6 pack of beer = 21

the reason a lot of people don't include food and water is cause it changes constantly throughout the trip.
sacco

Sacco, a larger person is going to a longer sleeping bag and one that’s cut wider, therefore it weighs more, a larger person will need a larger pack in order for it to fit their frame, therefore it weighs more, a larger person will have larger clothing therefore they weigh more. It’s an individual thing.

How come DeoreDX's Croc's are 10.2 ounces and Sacco's are 8 ounces? Different sizes? styles? And what are they, shoes?

The different sizes are based on age &/or gender. No animal will ever bother you if you carry a baby croc. They'll think momma is around and leave you alone. Most REI's rent them out. I let mine get to 16oz. before I returned it for a younger one. And generally I leash mine to my tent with parachute cord.

I don't include food water and fuel because the ammout I carry depends on how long the trip is.

Like I said... my winter list keeps me comfortable into the teens... which is winter in much of the US. I'm not going to fight the Whites or anything... but a little snow on the AT in January won't phase me a bit.

My true Alabama summer list I don't take a sleeping bag. Often I'll take only my 3oz silk liner and a 14oz fleece mummy bag. I was debating taking the Stratus this trip... I probably will sleep on top of it all weekend.

What's better, Crocs or Waldies? And a couple weeks ago I was in a bp store that was selling Birkenstocks that looked an awful lot like Waldies.
Ruby

8/27/04

I tend to forget stuff if I don't have a list, so I usually use a list for trips more than 3 days. Sometimes I just have a bag pre-packed with most of my essentials, so I can go last minute without much hassle.

Also, lists helped me get my weight down. I had more than 60 punds when I hit the trail with my 12 year old son for the 100 mile wilderness. Like Sunny, I vowed "never again."
pedxing

Ruby, Crocs have the heel strap, Waldies don't. Crocs are probably better for stream crossings. As camp shoes, probably not much of a difference.

And if you don't have a list, you are definitely not right. ;)
