You laugh (or not) but believe it or not, during the heady early days of nuclear energy, they actually considered doing stuff like that. The Russians actually tried using nukes as gigantic earth moving devices, at least once, if memory serves.

I did see this one things they were doing with dropping this stuff that pulls all the moisture out of a storm and turns it into gel, which then falls to the ocean and dissolves. apparently it had success in dissolving some storms and clouds.

I'm getting visuals of a big plane dumping a million gel-containing hankercheifs into the eye of the storm...

Yah that was a couple of years ago. The stuff did successfully dissapate a thunderstorm.

The inventor then mentioned something about this being used on hurricanes. All the weather scientists nearly burst their spleens laughing over that one. The storm volume in a hurricane is several orders of magnitude larger than a thunderstorm.

Spent all morning helping to clear neighbors' yards of Charley debris. When it looked like it was heading south we all took a breath and wondered if all our bracing was for not. Now we are back to being worried. They say we could have about 8-12 hours of sustained 60 mph winds.

In a humorous turn - I took advantage of the REI Labor Day sale - the package arrived today. I've been wanting one for two years now - a Marmot Dri-Clime Windshirt - just in time.

Coop, we took advantage of the LAbor Day sale too. A new 6 person tent, so Laurel has room to ramble. It might come in handy real quick.

Good job Tango.

Um...it just started to rain. Just a litle bit - through the sunshine - and light wind.

HPM & Tree - nice tent. So now I have an excuse / "need" to buy even more camping gear? I don't have a family tent yet.

It was an even better deal cause we had $100 in REI gift certificates.

I'm thinking next year might be a great time for an all about the kids trip southern style.

well....without the firearms, confederate flags and corn liquor anyway.

Skullcap,

If the whale is swimming deep when it farts, the fart carries colder water from the depths to the surface, cooling the surface water. Hurricanes feed off warm surface water.

Would rye whisky be better? Just kidding!

Tango, I'm ok. I'm more concerned about Laurel's teething (molars, they're causing some bleeding and lots of puffiness)than the storm so far. But I have started putting a few things in the car and getting my s--t in order if I have to leave.

I saw a convoy of PSE&G utility trucks headed south on the NJ Turnpike this morning, probably headed down to FL to help in restoring power. PSE&G is the one of the local power companies here in NJ. I wonder if they can make it down there in time...

Anyways, good luck all. Stay safe.

lmao at Coop.

I hear ya man - hurry up and get it over with already right?

Slowed down to 6 mph and is losing its organization - yesterday this strom was just downright scary looking, perfectly organized, classic hurricane shape, like two half cirlces slightly offset, and really well defined eye.

Now, it looks more like a giant thunderstorm cell, with rotation.

Still dangerous, but no longer a killer.

Now to see what happens when it walks off the Bahama Islands and crosses the open ocean and the Gulf Stream. Maybe the Gulf Stream will kick it back out into the Atlantic where it can blow itself out.

When I woke up last night, the winds were back up to 135, this morning they are back down to 105 yea! It looks like I have about 5-6 hours before I see the start of the feeder bands moving through.

It is a pretty morning here, but they say tropical storm force winds are due at noon. I am relieved that the storm weakened. We are not in a flood zone so the big worries are lessened for us.

Tango - any danger of flooding where you are?

The difference a day makes.

At the very least Frances will scrub all the crap out of the air.

The local news is predicting a 4-5 foot storm surge. That's nothing for me. Last night they were talking about 20 foot surf.

I'm betting a good chunk of my scout troop slipped the chain and is out surfing.

I'm going to head down to the beach this morning and later when the winds pick up. Maybe get some before and after photos.

I live 1/4 mile from Lake Toho, but I don't think any flooding. I don't live in a flood plain.

Be safe all!

That's the nice thing about feeder bands. If you don't believe the giant storm is really coming it kind of gives you a kick in the seat to fill the tub with water and put your pictures in plastic bags.

We just got back from the beach. Big surf and windy. Not bad yet but much the same we sure aren't going in the surf. Most of the surfers have hit the hot spots. Laurel had a blast playing in the newly formed tidal pools.

I'll get some pictures up before too long.

Lots of cars from further south up here too.
