Shopping yesterday I found foil packed clams in the tuna section. With pasta.... yum.

Have these been out there long? I'm thinking linquine!

Any other ideas for foil packed clams?

Yeah....make Chowder on the trail!

Dehydrate the broth/vegetables/potatoes.....then rehydrate the soup and add in the clams...

When it's cold out anyhow....

I wonder would boiling the clams in the water you're going to rehydrate the other stuff with work? I'd want hot clams in my chowdah.

I was food shopping last night and ran across boxes of chili. Single serve wax (or plastic, don't know) covered paper boxes, like juice boxes. Burnable, heavy, but might make a good first night's meal.

Great idea!

Would you want to wait until the other stuff rehydrates and then add to heat the clams.

Would want the veggies to suck the moisture out of the clams.

Damn, I knew times were hard for chili and all that, but I don't think selling himself is the answer.

Yo Bit...yeah...maybe throwing them in the boiling water for a minute or so...you don't want to cook them too much otherwise they get "tough" to eat....

I think adding cold clams into your rehydrated broth would make the whole thing too cold. I'd heat them somehow before I put them in. I suppose you could put the whole package in the boiling water to heat the clams up, then dump them into the soup after it was rehydrated.

BTW, I don't think that dehydrating the clams is an answer...

Oh, I didn't think that was your suggestion. I just wanted to get that out there...can you imagine the smell in a house whilst dehydrating clams? Ugh.

I tried the smoked scallops, and they are THE best. Love 'em! The clams are great too because they are not smoked, so they ARE great with pasta.

Everytime I go to the store I buy me a couple packs. I have a big load in my closet (food in the closet!!!) so when I go on a trip, I am ready.

has anyone seen that cooked hamburger meat that comes in the foil package kind of like the tuna and the clams? If so what does it taste like? I thought it might be good for a trip sometime.

I don't like the hamburger meat, but a lot of people do. I can eat it, I mean it's not like I want a gourmet meal out there, but I wish it would come in smaller packages. The package right now is way too big.

You can buy fish bouillion cubes and use that in the clam chowder. Knorr's brand is very good. Powdered whole milk is no problem either.

Anybody tried those new Zataran's ready meals in the pouches? You just dump the pouch in a boil and microwave it. I dont see any reason why you couldn't heat it up in a pan on the trail just as well.

Pretty heavy for packing. Might be OK for a weekend hike.

I got a pouch of precooked Zatarain’s Jambalaya at Wally World and found a foil pouch of Chicken of the Sea precooked Shrimp over by the tuna to add to it.
Now that's good eating for maybe a first night's meal.

are you talking about the dry packs of zatarain's or the new ones that are moist and pre-cooked? The pre-cooked ones look interesting...

I've had the dry ones-- they are good, but haven't tried the cooked ones.

I tried the chicken and herb rice pouch mixed with one of those foil pouches of chicken this weekend. Pretty damn good. The weight didn't bother me really. Better than lugging cans and cheaper than dehydrated stuff.

Found a few links for instant noodles....
Thai Kitchen Rice Noodles

I've had these before-- they taste great! :-)

I was looking for a link on Chinese/Vietnamese/Thai "Instant Rice Vermicelli" (noodles that look like angel hair pasta, but are made of rice. There are also fettucine-styled (wide and flat) instant rice noodles.... The vermicelli ones tend to re-hydrate much faster than the flat ones... They are both found in Chinese & Asian Grocery stores and are packaged like Ramen noodles (with a powdered soup base (lots of MSG, so beware) and usually a packet of a "moist soup stock" type flavoring....

And another link:

Since we're talking about drinks...

Winter's coming (or already here in some parts of the Sierra, Yippee!) & I'm starting to get my winter gear together. I'd like to branch out a little this year on hot drinks. In the morining coffee, of course, and in the evening I've historically done Lipton cup-o-soups. I'm not a big hot chocolate fan, every once in a while is OK.

So... what do y'all drink in the winter to warm your innards?
