Been Lost In the Backcountry?
Posted: Aug 31, 2004 11:25 AM Reply

We all get turned around now and then. Usually we get back on track and are on our way in no time. But sometimes the mess up becomes truly epic. Backpacker is looking for stories of the lost generation -- backpackers and dayhikers who took a wrong turn and got seriously lost. Bonus points for having had to spend an unexpected night out and for launching search and rescue operation. Tell us your story of getting lost and found, and you may appear in an upcoming issue of Backpacker Magazine.

Email your story to lostoutdoors@backpacker.com, or post it here in the forums. "

I was really drunk on night and got lost. The search party with flashing lights tried to find me but I got away. Boy I Wont do that again.

how in the world do you get lost in fiery gizzard? its only about 20 feet wide down in the bottom.

Define lost. Is that lost? heh.. I knew where I was, I just suddenly realized that I didn’t have a clue where the path went next.

I looked straight in front of me for the telltale marking on another set of rocks or a nearby tree. I looked up toward the rock bluffs to my left, thinking perhaps I had already come to my steep ascent to Raven Point. I even backtracked, knowing that surely I had lost the trail somewhere.

Is that lost?

when i was there you just had to keep stepping from rock to rock where the poison ivy looked the most beat down. that #&%!$ was everywhere.

If you're alive, then you didn't get lost. Unless a rescue was required.

I got off the trail in the bottom of the rock gorge when the trail took a hard left. I stayed along the creek and then tried to climb back to the trail and slid down a hill and over a ledge. Fell about 15 feet and landed on my back. Luckly my pack was pretty full and somehow I wasn't badly hurt.

EarthNsky -- yeah.. I remember you telling that... that's when we all admitted that a lot of us had been lost there..

Huh, is there a deadline? I've got a trip or two lined up. I guess I could get lost then and establish my claim to fame.

As many friggin' pictures as I take hiking now that I have a digital camera, I could probably find my way back from anywhere as long as the batteries held up.

You know, Daniel Boone was once asked if he had ever been lost in the wilderness. He rplies, "No, but I was mighty turned around once for three days."

My thought is: I'm not lost. I'm having an adventure.
