Charlies bunion is a bare rock peak in the smokies. In 1929 after it was logged for the last time a cloudburst washed all the soil off the mountain and sent a wall of soil, rock, trees and water blasting down the hillside.

September 1992 (note the time frame) a torrential rain dumped 4 inches of rain in one hour into the Raven Fork drainage. It sent a 12 foot flood downstream. In some areas water was 20 ft above pool and caused a huge amount of damge further downstream. If anyone has been there and seen the foot bridge at raven fork. That bridge is easily 15 ft above the stream. It was underwater during this flood.

HPM: I was thinking I would try to carry a digital movie camera.. and try to capture the hillside on video.. as it slid down the mountain toward all of us.

One thing I do have to say is that I most definately would change this to be a waterfall trip and simply go and video as many waterfalls as possible at flood stage.

Treebait tells me Abrams Falls was awesome at flood. Meanwhile I was working on getting drowned further downstream. :(

similar stuff happend at Linville Gorge in Frances's aftermath. One bridge that is normally about 10 feet above the river was 15 feet underwater, now there are entire trees stuck in the railings. THe visitor center flooded and was completely destroyed too.

We are all going.. not sure how the itinerary will change, but we decided we are all still going.

If nothing else, there is a picnic pavilion at Greenbrier.. we can just sit under it, and smile as the road floods away.

On a positive note. The normally filled park should be fairly empty. We should be able to drive to various trailheads at will.. even the Cades Cove area.

Don't be so sure about driving around. Roads get closed because of flooding, washouts, slides and the possibilities of these.

It's going to be interesting.. I know our plans will probably change, but it's a good responsible group. I don't see us doing anything INCREDIBLY stupid.. I'm tempted tho. I figure if I can get to the top of Ramsey, and into the fir thicket, we got it whooped, and can get to Tricorner easily.

Yeh, I didn't know the gun was loaded! Slides kill. Go look at the remains of a good slide from across I-40 from the old Walters Hydro-plant a mile north of the Waterville I-40 exit for Big Creek. That slide covered all four lanes and required around 9-months to clear. Or, too bad you can't see the 2-car garage-sized boulder that blocked both lanes leading north out of Gatlinburg. Look at any mountains in the park and you can see where there have been slides. Don't worry about a thing. Go and have a great hike.

Sad day in LA if the Florabama is gone and the Pony has significant damage.

Only visuals I have seen out of the AL coast have shown massive flooding.

Both brothers report minimal damage, no injury. Not much happened here in Hattiesburg.

TD, I would avoid the Smokies like the plague for a while.

Back when i lived in sevierville, actually closer to cosby, i remember sitting on the porch eating dinner at the Gatlinburg Ruby Tuesdays one year and they had been predicing flash flooding of the fork that runs thru gatlinburg and that runs under the porch at ruby tuesdays ....maybe 15-ft or more under it (this was over 20 yrs ago...some of my brain cells have been burnt since then)........we are eatin and drinkin and havin a good ole time looking at the ducks down there, when my husband dropped his fork and grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the table and into the main dining area....he and the others were witnessing this huge wall of water that was coming down the stream, it reached the bottome of the porch floor in seconds...
that was wild.

I have a great respect for flash floods and mountain streams....wear your swimmies~~~~

My sister is now eating seafood gumbo, then off to the airport and the plane schedule looks to be on time.

I am so glad I didn't really "give it to her" about staying since the storm did not effect her.

She still did take a chance, because no one could say if the storm would have hit her.

Yes, the weather is looking better for Gatlinburg. However, for Asheville, NC, they do have a few warnings:

Flood Warning
Flood Watch
Hazardous Weather Outlook
High Wind Warning
Short Term Forecast
Special Weather Statement

. Lake wind advisory until 6 pm edt.
. High wind warning tonight through Friday.
. Flood watch tonight through Saturday night.

This one bears watching. GSMNP:

"September 16, 2004

Hurricane Ivan Advisory
The remnants of Hurricane Ivan are forcast to bring heavy rain and high winds to the park beginning Thursday, September 16 through Monday, September 20. Current forecasts call for the possibility of very heavy rain (8-12 inches) in higher elevations and the potential for high winds. Depending of the track of the storm, serious flooding may occur in the park and surrounding communities. Temporary closures of park facilities, including the backcountry, may be necessary to ensure public safety. This forecast is subject to change. Please monitor weather forecasts closely."

If the forecast improves a little more, I might let you go. LOL.

Hog On Ice...Sipsey is a wonderful float.....but ya have to catch it when it is at least 4 ft at Grayson or you will have to drag your canoe.....5-7 ft is a fun float........and there is a GREAT camping/picnicing place just before you get to the rapids up on the right....we used to leave early and then sit up on the bluff and watch the rest of the canoers and kayakers come thru the rapids......

I've kept power so far. 5 roof leaks. Fun!

They are reporting that the Flora Bama is gone. They aren't saying damaged or collapse, just gone. The Gulf Shores pier is gone too, from what I heard. Peridio Pass bridge is gone. Ono Island bridge damaged. 5 lane road is now a 1 lane road with a 6' drop where the other lanes used to be.

On the B'ham broadcast the point of reference given for where the camera shots are coming from is usually the Flora-Bama.

Looks like Mullet toss 2004 was the last for a while.
