So, it seems that these storms generally hit the US. Do they every hit South America?

The South American continent or nations south of the USA and Mexico?

No, not that I am aware of and yes.

I was asking abou the South American continent. I know the Bahamas and such get hit sometimes. Is there a jet stream or something that pushes them north?

I stand corrected yes somtimes they hit the northern-most parts of South America.
Usually those that hit there are the Cape Verde type of hurricane.

Yes it is a combination of factors. The Earths rotation, Gulf stream, and prevailing winds. Just a lot of things that flow in an east to north west fashion.

There is another factor. Hurricane activity has increased significantly since Walt Disney built Orlando, Florida. Likewise a 10 fold increase in Earthquake activity has been documented since Disney opened shop in California.

This is supposed to be a heavy tropical storm year. There are more to come. We got a late start. First one didn't come until early August. If you got to the Weather Channel website and pull up the tropical Atlantic map, you can see the disturbances as they move off Africa. What is now Ivan was obviously going to be a big storm as soon as it moved off the African coast.

Latest projection shows Ivan skirting FL and heading into the Gulf, straight towards New Orleans, a city at how many feet below sea level? Terrifying to think of how a hurricane, under the right conditions, could fill that "bowl" completely and put an entire major city under 10 feet of water.

Hang on Florida! It ain't over!!!
Tampa better watch out!

Computer models show it entering the Gulf and passing along the FL west coast into the panhandle.

LOL, Fritz.
They can't really predict hurricanes worth a damn more than a couple of days ahead.
Some models show it coming right thru my front door on the MS Gulf Coast, others show it going up East of FL, not even hitting the US.
Sat or Sun we will have a better idea of the track.

As of 6 p.m. EDT Wednesday, Ivan is Cat 4 with 140 mph sustained winds. Central pressure is 947 milibars (that's low). Some strengthening is expected. It's currently near Curacao.

The outflow on the satellite photos is amazing. It's left a wake over the entire ocean!

Mandatory evacuations in the Keys.

I have a friend whose dad is having open heart surgery in Florida on Monday. Just moved down there in January. What a lousy year for so many people down there.

I'm guessing immigration to Florida is going to drop for a few years. More retirees are going to give Arizona and New Mexico a look-see...
bitpusher

That would be just fine with me.
It would give us a chance to re-think zoning, build a realistic infrastructure growth plan and give the rest of the state a chance to implement a decent building code like Miami-Dade did after Andrew.
humanpackmule

Well, either that, or they'll figure there's no way it'll happen again in their lifetimes, and the entire population of the Northeast older than 65 will invade Florida en masse, looking for "all them bargains after the hurricanes".

9/09/04

Minimum central pressure is 921 milibars, way low. It was down to 919, but rose slightly. Other parameters are equally huge. It's a big, powerful storm.

If it does move north, Cuba and Jamaica will take the worst of it. But what emerges would still be strong - at least Cat 3.

The Miami-Dade building code is fairly arbitrary. It has requirements, "just because." The Florida Building Code is based on the International Building Code. Since the adoption of that code the wind forces are up a good (wild guess here) 15% maybe. The Code isn't your issue, it's the enforcement on the smaller buildings. The buildings we do in Florida (several million sf under roof) are mostly big enough that threshhold inspectors are required. The IBC now requires Special Inspection on basically everything. This will take care of pretty much everything on new construction.
