We're looking at the big field that's around the creek crossing. I believe someone mentioned that it was before the creek crossing. I'm thinking that would be good for any folks that come in late on Friday.

Yes the the pasture is right across the creek. And there are several other great areas nearby also, just depends on how many others are in the area

The pasture is on the near side or far side from the road? Since we'll be at camp pretty early I suspect we'll get first pick.

The pasture is on the other side of the creek from the trailhead, once you get off the mountain and come out of the woods the creek is right there, you will see the creek as you are approaching the foot of the mountain

That's still probably the best place for a group of 15 or so though, correct? If folks come in late on Friday and don't want to cross they can hunker down on the other side til morning. Is the field close enough that they can yell to us to get creek depth info?

Still planning on coming...
DH, your weather report sounds good. You posted it, and we'll hold you to it. My plans are to drive on Thurs evening, camp wherever Thurs nite, then hike in in the AM. Does anyone have a GPS (not that I can use mine) cordinate for this mysteriosly well known camping site...and...this IS base camping correct???

I don't have GPS on it. If you look at the Quad sheet it shows a cemetary at the mouth of the canyon. This is roughly the spot.

Lovely,

My wife and I just found out that we have:

Friday: supper club (no biggie, I can miss)
Saturday: Her annual ornament swap. Big event in town with about 50 + ladies.
Sat night: Sunday school Christmas party
Sunday: Kids church play and my son is in it.

It seems like there is one other thing we found out about. I'm going to talk with my wife at lunch. She's fine with getting a baby sitter for the weekend, but I'm not.
It looks like I have 2 options:
1. Move the dang date again.
2. Bail on my own trip. Since I haven't actually been to the area and would be exploring it for the first time then this might not matter.

Let me know what yall think.

I was torn. December was a bit booked up and there is that undying need of yours to get me and Buddha Bear on a trip together. I wasn't driving 7.5 hours to turn right back around. LOL!

I would gladly drive 7.5 hours to hike with you (and not Buddha LOL) so I'll keep an eye this. Don't change it for me alone though.

December is a rough time. I found out that my wife was intending me to watch our son on the evening of the 11th, but my brother said he'd watch him and his son no problem.

I currently have nothing planned for the next weekend, but since the 17th is my birthday, my wife may have something planned and I don't know about it.

As of right now, I have nothing else planned for that weekend but was considering only coming for either a dayhike or just one night instead of the whole weekend. THe Walls are so close to me, so if you want to change the trip, thats fine. I can go down there anytime.

The two folks that needed this trip moved from 3-5 to 10-12 also had plans come up. Each trip teaches me a lesson. The lesson for this one is to not plan a public trip during the month of Dec.

Since I really was just a cat herder for this trip it may be that the best thing if for folks that still want to go, to go, and for folks that really had conflicts anyway to reschedule sometime in Jan.

Nigal, if you want to come South for a trip and can't make this one then check Sipsey in Feb. I'm considering changing the location to a more rugged canyon that I read about over the weekend in a book about Sipsey that Bama gave me.

I'll look at the next weekend, but we might go visit grandparents for the family gift swap instead of doing it New Years weekend. This sucks.

OK, I just called my wife and asked did she have anything secret planned for the weekend of my birthday (Dec. 17-19).

Her answer: Probably.

So if it gets moved to that weekend, I'm out. But if that weekend's good for everyone else, don't let my dilemma stop you from rescheduling. I live close to the WOJ, and can go anytime.

What's the nearest town so I can yahoo up some drive times?

Moulton, AL, or Double Springs, AL. Moulton is a little short of the Sipsey, and Double Springs is a little long, but they're both within 10 miles.

Looks like I missed something... is it moved to 17-19? That would be better for me actually. I have to be at my Grandparents house on the 20th (Jasper) to carry them to Chatanooga for Christmas.

Assuming:

70 interstate/60 divided: 8.5 hrs
75/65: 8 hrs to TH
80/70: 7.5 hrs

It's all interstate except the last 45 minutes or so.

It looks like 1 hour further to Sipsey than to Jericho.

My new bosses boss invited us to a Christmas party on the 11th.

It's not required but I'm weighing options as it helps to make yourself known in a corporate environment.

Here's my results from negotiating over lunch. Keep trip as-is and those that can go, can go. I can't go. I'll make a trip up there on 1/14-16 for any that are interested. I realize the Jan date hurts HPM since it gets close to Ocala and hurts stikmon since it's right on the heels of big bend. I won't strand my wife during 2 parties for us, 1 for her, and my sons Christmas play. She says it's fine, but it's not fair to her to do that. I'm really sorry about this. We found out about all of it on the phone this morning.

If the trip is moved...
to the 17th, I'm out. that is the weekend before I leave for Big Bend and I will need the weekend to prepare. As for January, I won't be able to do it as the distance is too great for a weekender. I would only drive that far for a 3 day weekend, and the only one planned for is Mt Luther Weekend, and I'm already committed for a 3 day float trip on the Points. Sorry folks, but Stikmon and Khatru will be traversing the great divide somewhere else on the 12, 13 ans 14th.

what?!?!?!?!
I get to do plenty of solo activities...I enjoy the group thing, but driving 16 hours...ok 9, to do a non-group "day hike" is silly. Plus, realistically, I should stay a bit local, as I will be putting 3000 miles on my truck in December. and that is alot of gas which = $$$. So, I'll stick close to home and save the miles and Jerico for another time.

Never miss a chance to get out, the weather may be perfect and the place is wonderfull. I will still be going and might even be talked into cooking some chickens. Or squirrels, if enough can be caught that day.
