lol, if the creek is so high I can't safely cross, I'll probably turn around and go back up, and perhaps wait until Saturday to go down.

Hehe. I am sure those rocks I hopped across last time will be completely covered this weekend. :) It is pretty rapidy water right there too. Have fun guys!

I think it's okay to camp anywhere in the area, so if we can find a clearing before the creek crossing, we might stay there, if the creek is too high.

Sorry bit, all the area before the crossing is the steep side of the gorge you are going down into. Unless you want to camp at the trailhead, there is not really another flat space until after the stream.

OK...that sorta screws things up. Well, this is a headwater, so hopefully it will be down by Friday morning...

According to the topo, there is a flat cleared area about 1800' from the trail near Polly Branch Spring, just as the trail reaches the bottom of the gorge. Of course, the topo is old and this clearing may be grown over by now. There is another larger clearing shown about 1000' from the trail, bordering Hurricane Creek. These areas may be flooded, but it's worth a look if Hurricane Creek is up too high to cross.

It's unlikely that either area is visible from the trail. I'm not trying to knock your recon, embear, just saying that there might be some other options.

This is a bushwhacking trip, right? We should bushwhack!

Bit, that very well could be the case. I was just speaking of the area that the trail goes through. If you are coming in at night would it not be hard to bushwack in the dark to find a camp area???

True, but I'll be coming in Friday morning sometime. If I think the creek is too high, I'll wait around for other people to show, and then we can decide what we want to. Of course, if I think it's too high and there are people on the other side already, I guess I'm just a big chicken...

I will be going in kinda early also, and I will be happy to show, anybody how to cross high and or rapid waters, but remember getting completely wet is expected. And yes, there are places down stream on the trail head side that would be great for camping.

Something has come up that precludes my coming this trip this weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to make the reschedule trip.

Flood Warning for Southeast Middle Tennessee for Thursday. This trip is looking doomed. I will still take off, maybe drive down there anyway and check out the area then go up to either Firey Gizzard or Savage Gulf. Stan says that sounds like a plan.http://www.newschannel5.com/content/

I'd love to see it booming. That's the way Sipsey is. The wetter the better.

If Sipsey is up this high...and Flint creek is out of it's banks.......this may be a very dangerous stream crossing......we have alot more rain on the way......I think I will stay home and put my Xmas tree up and who knows.......I may have to work......
...and BTW....I am having a VERY bad week @ work......and I need hugs....anyone wanna come help me decorate.....make cookies...and maybe take in a show???.....and yes...there IS crying in maintenance......went online this week with out new computer program.......grrrrrrrr.........

The Sipsey area got 3"-4" of rain yesterday. Not sure the Jericho area got that much.

I need to go check out Logan Martin Lake. Sipsey looks as high as it did a few weeks back. The lack flooded the city park parking lot then. Our city park is nestled around a slew on the lake. Very nice.

Shoot, I'd just hike in, in the clothes I wanted to leave in, get wet, and then hang them up for the weekend to dry. MDS, steppenwolf and I crossed Borden Ck in January in waist deep water. Luckily it was only 0.5 miles to the vehicle and dry clothes.

now that I know how good Alt 200 is I don't think I'll bother with the Borden Creek crossing anymore - free parking up at the crooked bridge and an easy 2 mile hike on Alt 200 (ie the bushwhack trail on the other side of the creek from the real 200). No getting wet in the cave or the semi rock climb going over top of the cave either.

I'm not familiar with that one HOI. Do you park at BC TH, cross the bridge and then hike down Borden on the "wrong" side of the creek?

The Walls are the headwaters of the Paint Rock River. It's at flood stage and expected to get worse as this next system moves thru.
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ahps.cgi?hun&Paint%20Rock%20River
The creeks at the headwaters, however, may have seen the worst of the rain by Saturday, when the Paint Rock is expected to be dropping.

The Tennessee is 5' above flood stage at Ditto Landing right now, and it's still raining. Plus, the forecasters are calling for snow flurries Friday night. If I weren't already out on this trip, I would call it at this point.

not sure what the forecast is for that area but they are still calling for more rain till around noon. Lots of flooding to the south of Nashville, esp along the Tn/Al line.

If you go be careful out there.

SS, I was wondering what dround meant.
