“This is really shaping up to be a cool trip. Looks like I'll wind up meeting DDX, karo, scullcap, toph, embear, and some others too.”

“I personally don't worry about security too much unless I have all my stuff packed up in which case I stash it well out of sight. In my opinion, the majority of hikers are good folk and respectful of other peoples gear. I would rather my camp be set up where everyone walking by could see it rather than it be hidden away for someone to pilfer undisturbed. The field would provide an easy to find site and plenty of room to get well away from any non-TTrs who may be camping as well as to separate the snorers from the light sleepers. Not saying which group I fall into ;)

I can't say for sure but we could possibly set up in the woods directly across the creek from the designated site as well.”

“I am just recovering from bulging disk in my lower back and a pinched nerve in my neck. I may not do much bushwacking and just hang out in the area and take some pics. I will have to check and see if I can get off that weekend also. Is it still the 10-12 of Dec.?

“Have to watch the weather the whole week leading up to the trip as well. If we get significant rain in the days prior, crossing that creek won't be much fun if even possible. They have a disclaimer posted to a tree as you get there stating that if you cross and a heavy rain comes along, you may be stranded on the other side until the water subsides. It would also suck to get down that hill only to have to turn back around...

My son and I were playing hide and seek the other day. He couldn't find me. I saw the call on the washing machine (my wife had hidden it) and would call out every few minutes. Great fun.”

“I'll post that warning on the main trips page. I'll bring a change of clothes just in case. Unless that creek is fast and chest deep, I'll get across. I've crossed Borden Creek at Sipsey when it was waist deep in January. I've had children since then too.”

“You could find us in the dark if the trail is marked. We're going to camp in that big field so that won't be an issue. Just getting to us and crossing the stream will be the hard part.”

“There's several good areas around the parking lot you could pitch a tent, then hike in the next morning. The parking lot is close to a 2 hour drive from the HSV airport.”

“There is at least one local buddy driving in on Sat morning you could hike in with.”

“The trail is very well marked with red blazes. I think it would be relatively easy to follow at night but if you were to get lost, you could just turn and head straight downhill until you get to the creek :)”

“I was looking back at embears photos and was wondering about those red blazes. It seems like white would've been better. They may have used red to discourage night hiking. There didn't appear to be any big drops on the way in from just looking at the map though.”

“Drops? There are a few switchbacks, but the trail is VERY easy to follow and doesnt come near any cliffs or anything.”

“I wasn't clear. I was trying to say that it wouldn't make sense to discourage night hiking since there don't appear to be any drops like you have at Savage, for example. The red blazes probably won't show up at night.”

“Hmmm. I dunno. There are red blazes everywhere though. They might want to discourage night hiking because after you get down into the canyon there are some dangerous slippery sections that have pretty steep dropoffs. That is all after you pass the campsite though.”

“toph mentioned the meteor shower earlier. The 11th is a new moon. It'll be pitch black outside. If it's clear we should really be able to see the stars.”

“I can't, but would love to. I'm hoping that we'll get a little pre-shower, shower on Sat night. That sometimes happens.”

“your navigator...I'm the pilot...I'll leave it up to you to gather directions to the TH. We'll camp thursday nite near the parking area and then hike in in the am on friday. I'll have a second tent and matress and sleepy bag, this way, I don't have to mess with my pack.

Its good to have multiples of everything.”
