Scorch!!
Now, for piercings...

...I suggest a wrought iron door knocker hanging from the bottom of your nose!

Hey, get two! Then, those same party people can say, "hey what a set of knockers she has!"

I say go for it. Just make sure its something you wont be ashamed to show mom your kids or employer. I have 9, all of which can be covered, though rarely are.

...4" cross on my right calf
...US flag and eagle on right shoulder
...wrist band on right wrist that says "I am my beloveds and my beloved is mine" in hebrew caligraphy
...chinese symbol meaning "to do ones best" on my left shoulder
...sun god rah on my right pec
...tribal arm band left bicep
... down by law symbol below tribal band
...my daughters initials on my inside left forearm
...my best one is from my left elbow to wrist on the back of my forearm. Its a memorial to my best friend, a helmet placed on a rifle with the rifle stuck in the ground (barrel down) between a pair of boots with with his name arcing the top with his birth and death days on the bottom.

Most of mine are for me in that they arent usually visible. 3 are intentionally visible for a variety of reasons. They arent for everyone. The stigma of tattoos is much less then years ago but when you have large ones on your body that are visible be prepared for judgment.

more important: Make sure the tattoo artist knows what he/she is doing.

Watch him/her and make sure he/she isn't stickn' the needle in too deep. (fat lines)

I have a humming bird on my arch, very detailed. well it was, but it's almost 20 years old now, so it is a little faded and the lines did also get a little thicker. Still, that's an artist I would go to again.

I have a lizard on my left ankle. nice image, but the artist stuck the needle too deep. Lines are very thick. Really not too nuts about that one.

i have one on my lower back also, love that one, but it didn't matter if the lines were thick on that one because it was a tribal symbol.

Gemini brings up the most important point, QUALITY.

Shop around, you get what you pay for. Avoid the big no-no, friends who do ink. I have seen some real crap done by "friends". Unless they are really really good go to a pro. Its forever. Find a local artist and stick with em. Call around and talk to shops about an artist you are considering, its a small world and most ink slingers know each other locally, bad reputations travel fast.

I have nothing against tattoos at all on other people. I kind of like seeing what people choose for their tats.

But I just can't get the image out of my mind of what our nursing homes are going to look like in 40 - 60 years...full of faded, stretched out tattoos.

OK, so here's a post from "an old guy"... probably similar to what you might get from your parents.

What in the he!! are you trying to do??? Fit in with a loser crowd? Get Blood poisoning? Be forever tatood as a "loser" whenever you try to fit in with "society" (ie., "get a job!, etc.!)

I think you're making a BIGGGG mistake, but that's only from the perspective of someone who thinks you may want to do something productive with your life. If you don't... then go-for-it, get as many tattoo's as you want. Just don't ask me to pay for your health care bills, OK?

For crying out loud, getting a tattoo does not make one unproductive in society. Self expression is just that. There's a very good reason why we are all different.

Not trying to crack back ya here, but both of my grandpa's have.had tat's, both served in the service and I don't concider them to be losers.

Tat's are a fad that come and go. Problem is that you have to leive with them, so don't get the "Tommy Lee", but if ya need to, do it knowing what yer getting into.

Myself, I would never...it would make it way too easy to I-Dent the body. I'd like to make'em work for it.

All kidding aside, realize that there is Tats that are *cool* to have and there are some that just make ya look like a hooker. I have a great love for Tat art, but that's just it -- it's art! go to some one who knows what the hell they are doing and are safe. Ask to see some examples of hi/her art work, they should be proud to show it off. I would say that if they so not, run.

BTW - LMFAO @ Stratus. That was big time and on time!

I'm trying to hire a bunch of people right now for some newly-created positions. Those people will have to deal with the public...and therefore be aceptable to them in general if they are to be sucessful. Any and all studies you can find will tell you that visible "body art" is still on the fringes of societal aceptance, and therefore if one is to have the greatest degree of acceptance / success in dealing with the public, them logically and statistically they won't have potentially ffensive, visible body art on display.

So... who do you kid's think I'm hiring?... those with, or without, offensive tat's??
wanderer

I don't have any right now, but if I was to get something done, it would probably be something real subtle that could be covered up easily if necessary.

One of my buddies has like an barbed anklet just above one of his ankles that looks really cool. If I ever had something done, it would probably be something along those lines.

Just my $0.02...

How do you classify an "offensive" tat? Many tat's are very artistic and not at all offensive. Does having a tattoo automaticly make one "offensive"?
And for that matter,
coloring what is left of your hair offensive?
Shaving your brow offensive?
Piercing's other than ears offensive?
And how many in each ear, eh?
How many rings per finger?
Lace or velcro your boots?
12 inches of hair on you face? Better shave your arse or tuck your shirt into those droopy drawers!

Be you, but don't show us who you are. This is an "at will" nation. If we don't like the way you offend our prude customers, you will not or will no longer work for us.

I will still purchase a Subway Sandwich from the friendly guy with the everpresent blue tear drop under his left eye.

People deal with who they are comfortable dealing with, you can't mandate that! We live in a country where free-enterprise reigns, and no-one has to like your crap. You can't tell someone they have to accept you, either they do, or don't. If you don't want to try to appeal to the masses, then you don't have to. Just bear in mind, though, that I don't have to give your sorry a$$ a few coins when you've got you tattood hand out begging for help. AND, that includes a whole lot of other things you probably consider "rights", such as paying for your healthcare, etc., etc. I shouldn't have to give you anything... you don't want to fit-in, you don't have to.

Wanderer, Maybe not offensive, but most tattoos I see aren't offensive. I agree that at one time your way of looking at it was the norm. In my business I rub shoulders with literally all walks of life. These days, I encounter tattoos and body piercings and "weird" hair in literally every walk of life and socioeconomic standing. I know hard-working affluent doctors and lawyers who have tats and piercings just as well as the coffe shop dudes and starving artists. I just don't think your views are necessarily the majority anymore. I think a lot of people wouldn't choose to do that to themselves, but they have accepted that many others in our society today do so as part of their self-expression. And they aren't offended by it either as much as curious.
Ruby

9/08/04

Didn't say that OO, chill.

Ruby, the view I expressed isn't necessarily my own, and it doesn't have to be the majority to have credence. When one deals with the public, one should endeavor to offend as few people as possible, so if I'm offending 20% fewer potential customers by NOT having some offensive tattoo or outlandish hardware hanging from my face, then I'm 20% better off than some competitor who is offending them.

Simple math, really.

To be fair, wanderer has a point. People will judge you for a variety of reasons, tattoos being one.Its part of the package. I periodically get strange looks when I am out shopping with my daughter. I dont mind it, I knew that was going to happen and to get mad about it or to whine about "acceptance" is just plain naive.

However, I have never felt that my tattoos have held me back. I was the only candidate for my job who was tattoos (there were 13 applicants) and geuss who got it. I am around kids (kindergarten through 12th graders) daily and have established a reputation for myself as being polite, courteous and well liked by those I encounter (at least the the "thank you" letters to my boss imply as much). I also have my own electrical business that I run in my free time and most of my customers call me back for more work and the others generally pass my number on to others. It can go both ways. If you are in idiot you'll be treated accordingly with or without tattoos.

Though as a side note I cannot stand piercings and would definitely shy away from a kid with stuff stuck all over his or her face. I just find that silly looking, but thats just me.

Le Plane...................Le Plane
Tattoo "artists" (if that's what you call some of them) are a dime a dozen. As long as you have a tattoo gun you're a tattoo artist...but that doesn't make them a good artist, though.

Go to alot of shops and see what some have done and you'll see what I mean. So shop around for someone who can actually draw...not just ink.

IMO, 1 Out Of 10 Tattoo Artists Are Truely Artists
Go to alot of shops and see what some have done and you'll see what I mean.

Or better yet, check out alot of other people's tattoos and you'll see that some of them aren't necessarily done by "artists".
Buddur

I agree with birch and I see wands point as well.

It depends on how you act and present yourself. If you have an *Arg! I have tat's back the phuck off* type additude, well then people will get turned off.

Back when I worked in *corporate America*, something like this would have been poo-poo'd, because I delt with the same type of clinets that Ruby deals with and my boss would have none of that. There was a certain type of *presentable* attire and look he wanted.

The last time I was in the emergence room for one of my kids, the Ped's doctor had some real sweet tat's all over that were very visible. I thought it was cool.

I guess the bottom line is - just like you have the right to express yourself, someone else has the right not to agree. Keep that in mind when deciding where and what your going to get, and think wbout how you might feel when you get to be my age (35). Although I'm really not into *body piercing* myself (and I'm just talking the real out landish stuff, not the belly, nipples thing) it does have an advantage over tats, as you can remove the hardware and there would be little if anything left behind. Just like diamonds, tats are forever....
