NY: Albany, New Paltz, Buffalo

IMHO, Rockland and Westchester Counties still count as Downstate New York. You probably want to go farther north...”

I think that's right...Walsh's was right across from the Old Village Inn and the Helen Hayes Theater, next to a mexican resturant and a Japanese resturant right on Main.

I spent too many nights there when i lived in Nyack. I was on Gail Dr...which was up the hill from town. Nyack was/is a great place...though San Fran and Switzerland have been nicer so far...

I don't think the winters are too bad. The coldest month is Jan. with average high of 31 and low 13. Average snowfall is 52" per year.

I currently pay about $90 a month for car insurance as a male in my mid 20's.”

What is rent like? Do people even rent?

“Rent is a lot less than NYC. But so are average salaries. When I was in college about 2 years ago, I lived in Troy, which is about 5 miles north of Albany. My rent was $650 a month for a 3 bedroom. But rent prices here really depend on locations. I’ve seen one place that had condo apartments that were $1million a year, but this we very extreme.”
