Rocky Mountain National Park (CO)
Exposure Fatality and Two Rescues

On Saturday, September 4th, Sudheer Averineni, a 26-year-old Indian national, attempted a climb of the Keyhole route on Longs Peak, the park's popular “Fourteener” (a “Fourteener” is any mountain over 14,000 feet – Longs Peak is 14,259 feet high). The Keyhole route is still classified as "technical" due to snow and ice conditions, only the second known year since the early 1920's that this route has remained technical throughout the entire summer season. While attempting the summit, Averineni's two companions turned back near the Keyhole formation around 13,000 feet due to deteriorating conditions. Averineni continued on, though, and was last seen a short distance below the summit just after noon. When he failed to returned that evening, a search was begun. Conditions on Longs Peak from Saturday afternoon through Sunday were severe – fresh snow, rime ice, recorded winds in excess of 60 mph, and temperatures well below freezing. Averineni's body was found on the summit around 1 p.m. on Sunday. He was dressed in sneakers, jeans, a cotton shirt, and a cotton sweatshirt. A cell phone was found in his pocket. The cause of death has been determined to have been exposure. This was reportedly Averineni's third attempt on Longs Peak this year. The recovery of his body was delayed until Monday due to weather and winds. The summit of Longs Peak remained closed to public use until that time.

Its tragic and I feel bad for his family, but really - I hope his family realizes what kind of choices this guy made and don't try to blame the park service or something like that.

if it was his third attempt this season he did know what the conditions were like. Surely he could see the snow and surely he knew that it was cold. Certainly he realized that the wind was blowing hard when the 60mph gusts were hitting his face.

I'm trying to beat a dead guy once he's already down, but if he didn't know better, he certainly should have realized that he was taking a BIG chance by not comeing down with his buddies.

Bombs, guns, knives, kites...

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Flying a kite in Pakistan is a dangerous pastime.

Already it's banned for all but 15 days of the year but a provincial minister warned kite-flyers this week that any who cause injury or death with string made from metal or coated with glass could be tried under anti-terrorism laws.

The Punjabi chief minister's unprecedented threat came just ahead of the start of an annual kite-flying festival in the provincial capital, Lahore, Sunday.

Kite-flying in Pakistan and neighboring India often involves aerial duels in which participants try to bring down each other's kites using string coated in a sticky paste of ground-up glass or metal.

Every year, Pakistani media report dozens of deaths and injuries caused by kite flying, mainly of children and motorcyclists whose throats are sometimes cut by metal or glass-coated string.

"It is a matter of concern that a healthy sport is being turned into a game of death," the official APP news agency quoted Punjab Chief Minister Pervez Elahi as saying Tuesday.

Elahi said a crackdown had been launched against the sale of sharp kite string and threatened a permanent ban on kite-flying if deaths continued.

"Action under the Anti-Terrorism Act would be taken in case of deaths due to ... dangerous kite-flying string," he was quoted as saying.

Pakistan's Supreme Court banned kite-flying nationwide last year in response to an outcry over injuries and deaths. The ban was lifted for a 15-day period to allow the holding of this month's traditional kite-flying festival of Basant.

Some Islamist groups have staged protests in the past week after newspapers reported several deaths caused by kite-flying, denouncing the activity as un-Islamic.

I learned something here. I thought the Taliban's law banning Kite Flying was thoroughly ridiculous - but reading this means they had some reasonable basis for doing it (not that I agree with the law, but it wasn't as bizarre as I thought). It goes to show that just because people are crazy it doesn't mean everything they do is crazy (even a broken clock is right twice a day).

PORT SALERNO — Members of the Martin County Fire Rescue Hazmat team responded to a fuel clean-up Tuesday morning after a boater pumped gasoline into his fishing rod holder instead of his gas tank.

The boater pumped about 100 gallons of gasoline at the Finest Kind Marina fuel dock before he noticed the problem, but only about 15 gallons polluted the water, marina employees said.

The rest of the gasoline seeped into the boat’s bilge tank, witnesses said.

The man’s fishing boat was towed from the fuel dock to Sandsprit Park so Hazmat officials could secure the fuel, said Jeff Alter, Fire Rescue bureau chief.

I hope that guy is billed ALL the cost of the operation. Every cent including the gas he pumped which needs to be re-pumped.

He must've thought, "Gee, the gas here is really really expensive!!! My little fishing boat is costing me over $300.00 of gasoline......"

Correct me if I'm wrong....we're talking about a small fishing boat, right? Not a commercial fishing boat.....

The boat has a bilge tank and seemingly a built in fuel tank. This don't sound like a dinghy to me. 100 gallons of fuel is not outrageous for a boat if memory serves me.

I doubt that he was even paying attention. I imagine he stuck the nozzle in, set the automatic on it and let it run. Then he probably turned his back on it to do other stuff like get beer, bait, cold cuts, whatever from the store, get out his skis, poles, or whatever else he planned to do that day. Or maybe he was talking to other folks on the dock. All this time expecting the gas pump to shut off when the tank was full.

How many people fill up their cars the same way and just wait for the pump to shut off when the car tank is full?

Still, he is an idiot for not knowing the difference between his fuel tank cap and his rod holder cap (I am assuming he had screw on cap for his rod holder or he is even stupider than I thought).

This happens many times all over the country every year. Never to me thank goodness :)
