Dead at 55
Rocker Johnny Ramone is the third member of the band to have passed away. He was 55. He was a little different in my eyes than just another celebrity. Back in my radio days, I had the good fortune to spend 1/2 hour in a motel room at Busch Gardens in Tampa (1979) with Johnny and Joey Ramone. I had still been a bit green in the radio biz, as most of my announcing positions were on public radio and I hadn't yet graduated to local commercial success yet. I was doing a New Wave show on a local listener supported radio station at the time and landed interview time with the two of them. I went with two other female members of the radio staff and spent a memorable 30 minutes with them on tape. They could have easily torn us up professionally, but treated us real well instead. Two nice guys. RIP, Johnny!!!!

I have a signed 'Rock and Roll High School' original movie poster that they gave me. The shows were so much fun. I remember airing one of their NY performances on one of my shows and laughing about the fact that the show was one hour and fifteen minutes and they played 35 songs!

I remember trying to see them at an odd venue - the Philadelphia Zoo. They performed with the B-52's but we got there late and the last scalper wanted more than we were willing to pay. We snuck around back and climbed the fence - I snagged my jeans and hung upside down until they ripped - perfect for a Ramones show. We climed through the ladies room and ended up in an animal pen - we didn't hang around to find out what kind. We almost made it to the stage area when security caught us and sent us outside. They said we did pretty well and if we tried again, we might make it.

We went in through the ladies room door and climbed out the window to avoid a well lit area. Whatever it was was real musky smelling. Like I said, we didn't stick around.

Bummer.
I've seen them once.
They get up on stage blasted through about 8 songs and stopped midway through another. They all stood up and walked to the edge of the stage and pointed out some guy in the crowd.

"You live in Florida, it's July and you are wearing a leather jacket. Rock on! Come up here and help me sing the next one!"

Gabba gabba hey!

Too dang funny.

Reminds me of one other story concerning my time with them. When we went into the Agora Ballroom in Tampa earlier in the day to iron out some details for the interview, they were in the middle of their soundcheck. When we entered, they stopped and apparently we pissed off Marky, because he stoped playing, blurted out some obscenities and kicked over his drums and stormed off the stage. Made us a little uncomfortable, to say the least. We took care of biz and got out before we pissed any of the others off...

Sad Day
Joey, Dee-Dee, and now Johnny...

Wherever these guys end up in the afterlife is where I want to be!

There's still sizable aftershock left in my bones when I think back to witnessing the Ramones in concert. They roared. It was a non-stop audio barage who's energy could only possibly be eclipsed by the fusing of hydrogen atoms.

Elvis' passing didn't mean much to me. He was a generation ahead of mine. However, when Joey passed away I knew what all those folks felt when the King died. A void was created by his interminable absence that will never again be filled.

R.I.P. Johnny - Long Live The Ramones!!!
