if you're paying $175 a month i'm sure you wouldn't spend more than that on doctors visits and prescriptions...of course i'm just making assumptions about your health”

my 2 prescriptions alone at the negotiated rate were almost 200.00 a month..full price was over 300.00 a month.

Stuff like that happens when you get old :(

In the old days insurance rates were community based rates from hospitals. Young, old, sick and healthy all pooled together and paid the rate. Then insurance actuarials figured out the healthy young males cost less.. They offered them a lower rate. Guess what, the community rate had to go up.
If the young and healthy move to a HSA plan leaving older, chronically ill families in standard insurance plans the premiums have to rise.... This works great until you or a family member needs a new kidney.

i think i'm missing something here...i've seen more than one person type that HSA plans are great unless something bad happens...deductibles for HSAs are anywhere from $1000-$5000...the vast majority of people in our country would be able to afford this much for a medical emergency

There are all kinds of HSA's just as there are all kinds of other plans. Some have a high deductible, some have a low deductible, everyone has to make the best decision for them based upon their individual needs & health status. If you take a lot of expensive meds you would want a plan different from people like me who refuse to take a Tylenol :), that's just me & my anti-med stance & beliefs. So Ewker & I have different needs, I have no on-going routine expenses but would want to be covered in the event of a catastrphic illness only, everything else I'll just pay for. Ewker has routine, on-going costs that mandate he select a diff plan, in his case, one that would pick up his monthly Meds tab but might cost more / month than mine would.

We need a lot of options. Family Plans are dramatically different than individual plans.

And for those who complain about the acturial guys tracking the costs to deliver HC to individual groups, that's the only way we'll have the info required to forcast healcare needs.

I am willing to bet big $$ that a lot of this goes away in the coming years & we'll end up w a National Health plan modeled after Medicare / Medicaid.
