Questions about Cleaning a Platypus...View MessagesViewing posts 1 to 45 of 45 messages posted.
Help! “I seemed to remember reading somewhere (I thought it was on TT) that some people use denture tablets to clean out their platypus hydration packs... But, I can't seem to find the thread-- Has anyone done this or can anyone point me to the right thread? Thanks!” 11:55:29 PM 9/20/04 “plop plop fizz fizz oh look how clean it is. I seem to recall that too, seems like it would work with a mild bleach solution ( one teaspoon of unscented bleach will create a gallon of sanitary water that is drinkable ) The fizzing action would agitate the water.” 12:10:55 AM 9/21/04 I thought they were protected “Were you planning on cooking it whole, or did you want to grill it?” 12:52:33 AM 9/21/04 “Hey good topic since a friend of mine just gave me their old one. I was wondering how sanitary it was.” 5:57:12 AM 9/21/04 “I know camelback is selling some sort of tabs that suppose to clean it. Wouldn't surprise me if it's nothing else then denture tabs. Only at a much much higher price. lol I use bleach and water though.” 6:06:44 AM 9/21/04 “Yeah you can use them. Just make sure you rinse it out good afterwards.” 6:52:58 AM 9/21/04 “grilled platypus is OK as long as you marinate it over night. Otherwise it tastes like a drowned cat. Not that I know what a drowned cat tastes like.” 7:08:34 AM 9/21/04 “You have to be careful of the back legs too. They have spines that are very poisonous. Little too rubbery for my taste too.” 7:23:58 AM 9/21/04 “True. The back legs are a lot more rubbery than the rest of the body. That has to do with the platypus self-defense mechanism. You think its a cute cuddly meal until you try to grab it by sneaking up on it. I had one break my jaw with it's legs. For months I was eating platypus through a straw. Liquidfied with my Bass-O-Matic (Got tired of Bass).” 7:45:18 AM 9/21/04 “ROFL” 8:12:04 AM 9/21/04 “I figured this thread would get some responses... :-P” 5:59:54 PM 9/21/04 “You know I was wondering how you clean a platypus too... can you eat the tails? I imagine they are a little rubbery too.” 6:09:34 PM 9/21/04 “I use bleach, and freeze them from time to time” 6:10:29 PM 9/21/04 “Turtle cleaned mine for me...” 7:16:14 PM 9/21/04 “BAking soda 1/8c and uncooked rice1/8c with a cup of water shake shake shake! Sanitize 3-5 drops bleach shake shake shake, Pour out insert a loose paper towel twisted up into the mouth to act as a wick then hang and allow to dry. Bleach again prior to use!yo bear!;)” 8:10:55 PM 9/21/04 “I have posted before about the denture tabs. Seems I read about it some where and when my wife got some in her surprise 40th birthday basket at work, I snatched them! LOL I do still have my teeth, Thank Goodness! Any way they work real well, but so does a mild bleach solution. Just rinse well after either method and hang to dry.” 8:23:53 PM 9/21/04 “You people are sick, talking about eating a poor platypus, when the question was how to clean one! Everyone knows all you need is a comb and some slightly soapy water!” 9:44:34 PM 9/21/04 “Heh heh, seriously though, I usually just use some dish soap and hot water, then rinse them really well, then let them air dry as well as possible. Works for me....” 9:45:32 PM 9/21/04 “Hey Karo-- how many tabs did you use? I used 4 for a 3-liter bag. Do you think that's enough? Do you still have to scrub it as well? P.S. I happen to have a Platypus Teenie Beanie Baby... keep it in a plastic baggie and then I never have to clean it! :-)” 9:59:04 PM 9/21/04 “PLATYPUS CRUELTY don't you know it'll suffocate in that bag!?!?!?! Poor thing is prolly already dead. you should be ashamed.” 11:16:56 PM 9/21/04 “I gave up on Playti pus when the last one sprung a leak lying on the counter. Now it'd Dromedary or Nalgene only. And I use the soapy water with a little bleach method. No complaints.” 11:27:28 PM 9/21/04 “A platypus that springs a leak will likely die the next time it is submerged and should be taken to a vet immediately. Of course it might be one of the indeginous creatures from Now What? Does it communicate by biting you on the leg?” 9:00:52 AM 9/22/04 “CONIGLIO ALLA MOLISANA STEWED PLATYPUS WITH SAUSAGES 1 Platypus - (about 3 1/2 lb) Salt Pepper 1 Parsley sprig - finely chopped 1 Rosemary sprig - finely chopped 1/4 lb Ham, - thinly sliced ~ (12 slices) 12 Sage leaves 6 small Sausages, Italian 1/2 cup Olive Oil Bone the platypus carefully, keeping the pieces of meat as large as possible. Wipe the platypus meat with a damp cloth. Cut it into 12 even-sized pieces, flatten them out lightly, and season with salt, pepper and a little finely chopped parsley and rosemary. Put a slice of ham on each slice of platypus and roll up tightly. Take 6 skewers. Thread a roll of platypus, 1 sage leaf, 1 sausage, another platypus roll and another sage leaf on to each skewer. Brush the skewers with oil and broil (grill), over charcoal if possible, or on a rack placed as close as possible to the source of heat. Alternatively, the skewers can also be baked in a slow oven at 350 degrees for one hour. Turn the skewer occasionally, each time brushing with oil. Serves 6 Yumbalicious!”10:20:40 AM 9/22/04 “Here's how I clean mine......... Admittedly, the Platypus cleaning chore is not the most enjoyable part of the hunt, but the extra time spent taking care of the meat will pay dividends at the table. Cleaning takes effort, so your heavy hunting coat should be removed and your sleeves rolled up so they wont be soiled. Disposable vinyl or latex gloves lessen the chances of passing infectious diseases and make hand cleaning easier. Blood and digestive juices from organs possibly penetrated by the shot must be removed from the body cavity quickly, and the sooner the organs, which deteriorate rapidly, are removed, the faster the meat will cool. Cleaning also eliminates dragging unnecessary weight when moving the animal. Before starting the cleaning process, keep in mind that it is important to keep dirt and foreign objects away from the exposed body cavity. Removing the scent glands is not considered necessary, but is done with care by many hunters.. Roll the platypus carcass over on its back with the rump lower than the shoulders and spread the hind legs. Make a cut along the centerline of belly from breastbone to base of tail. First cut through the hide, then through belly muscle. Avoid cutting into the paunch and intestines by holding them away from the knife with the free hand while guiding the knife with the other. Unless the platypus head will be mounted, the cut should pass through the sternum and extend up the neck to the chin to allow removal of as much of the windpipe as possible. The windpipe sours rapidly and is a leading cause of tainted meat. With a small sharp knife, cut around the anus and draw it into the body cavity, so it comes free with the complete intestines. In doing this, avoid cutting or breaking the bladder. Loosen and roll out the stomach and intestines. Save liver (yummy). Split the pelvic or "aitch" bone to hasten cooling. Cut around the edge of the diaphragm which separates the chest and stomach cavities, and split the breastbone. Then, reach forward to cut the windpipe and gullet ahead of the lungs. This should allow you to pull the lungs and heart from the chest cavity. Save heart (also yummy). Drain excess blood from the body cavity by turning the body belly down or hanging animal head down. Prop the body cavity open with a stick to allow better air circulation and faster cooling. A clean cloth may be useful to clean your hands. If you puncture the entrails with a bullet or your knife, wipe the body cavity as clean as possible or flush with water and dry with a cloth. Don't use water to wash out the body cavity unless the paunch or intestines are badly shot up.” 10:24:56 AM 9/22/04 The deadly Platypus “You guys are still not taking in the fact that they are venomous. Check out the link (sorry don't know how to imbed it.) http://www.kingsnake.com/toxinology/old/mammals/platypus.html” 10:30:48 AM 9/22/04 Let me guesss.... “Tastes like chicken?!” 10:33:14 AM 9/22/04 The Deadly Platypus “In human victims, severe pain and swelling, with loss of function of the limb, may last for several days. There is no specific treatment for platypus stings. Analgesia is usually required. Tetanus prophylaxis should be undertaken according to the patient's immune status. So eat 'em up!” 10:39:31 AM 9/22/04 “I didn't like my bladder water supply much. Didn't know when it would go empty & the tube froze in winter. I got an insulator for the tube but the mouthpiece still froze. I also got multiple brushes for the bag & a long skinny brush for the tube. I used diluted bleach to clean but the process became laborous. I'm back to plastic bottles as I have 2 bottle holders on my caribou pack. I do like the squirt top caps. Very light to cart out of the woods & crushable if need be.” 10:47:17 AM 9/22/04 “ ![]() 1.Air and smell inlets 2.Beak Snout 3.Heavy Lids 4.Cheek pouch 5.Extendable flipper 6.Fur 7.Poison injector 8.Propulsion paddle” 10:52:43 AM 9/22/04 “LOL-- BM-- where did you get that pic?” 11:00:40 AM 9/22/04 “I was gonna say to watch out for their claws, but it almost seems irrelevant now.” 11:01:57 AM 9/22/04 “I cannot reveal some of my sources. I do question "propulsion paddle". Or maybe it's just a fancy smancy science name for "tail"?” 11:45:47 AM 9/22/04 “What kind of meat is Platypus? Is it dark, white, or red? Maybe it's all three.” 11:49:06 AM 9/22/04 “Platypus ... the new botox! Wrinkle treatment includes small doses of brandy. Removal of platypus from injection area ... extra fee. (Inspired by LNSTR74's link.)” 11:50:51 AM 9/22/04 “Platypus meat is blue because fur sucks for keeping anything warm in water.” 11:54:10 AM 9/22/04 “Tell that to a beaver. The kind that swim, not the ones you try to catch.” 11:55:37 AM 9/22/04 “I inspired somebody. I feel so proud. LOL” 4:14:40 PM 9/22/04 “is it me, or does that particular platypus have a snorkel?!” 4:16:38 PM 9/22/04 “lol! I think it does!” 4:59:51 PM 9/22/04 “So, as someone asked, if you do the bleach method, do you need to scrub it out? I wouldn't think so, because some people use a drop or two of bleach in their water (like on an AT hike) to disinfect it, I understand. And lets just say it's a Camelbak instead, K? :-)” 11:11:24 PM 9/22/04 “Actually, I wondered if you needed to scrub it out if you use the denture tabs... I just rinsed mine out with a lot of hot water....” 1:35:15 AM 9/23/04 “Why is it all you "allegedly" young people have denture tabs?” 6:36:01 AM 9/23/04 “I got the idea of useing denture tabs from Nalgene's web site. They sell them on there for cleaning their bags out. I figured if it worked in a Nalgene why not a Platypus. I just rinse mine out with hot water a couple of times too. Hasn't killed me yet.” 7:12:25 AM 9/23/04 “arent those things dangerous i personally wouldnt try to clean one they got huge claws and stuff!! I bet the bite to” 10:27:38 AM 9/23/04 “They only eat lizards. LOL” 10:38:34 AM 9/23/04
