I think the squirrels ganged up on him for not dropping enough goodies on the trail. Durn squirrels!

Somehow this reminds me of the incident when a woman shouted at an NBA ref, "If you were my husband, I'd feed you rat poison!" He answered back, "If you were my wife, I'd eat it!"

This is the most common form of death in the grand canyon. I have a book that has the stories of every person that has died there since they started recording it in the 19th century -- about 800 so far (I know, grim reading but interesting).

Most of the cases are like, "OK honey, now just back up a little more so I can get the whole thing into the picture frame. Wait!..."

I'm wondering which trail...

Last time I was there, there was ice near the rim and we were joking about needing parachutes.

It was a little hairy going down whatever trail we went down in April (find my trip report for details), but doable with a little caution....

Maybe they should put guardrails all around them trails.

An elevator would help too.

That big hole in the ground is dangerous. The govt. should fill it up and make it safe.

New Yawks next landfill should make it safe to hike there.

May be a slight deterioration in the downstream water quality though.

My wife and I went down the Hermit Trail -- not maintained -- a week after a huge rain storm hit in '01. It was so bad they even closed Bright Angel and had just opened it up again when we arrived. One part of Hermit goes over a 20-foot wide wash. When trying to find the other side of the trail I instead found the end of the wash ... and the several hundred foot sheer drop at the end of it, complete with downward-sloping loose rock. Yeah, I can understand how it is easy to fall there.

In talking to a ranger after our hike, we found out the wash is not usually so washed out, and that it should have been easy to pick up the trail. Also, a photographer that had been to the canyon for decades was lost in the rain storm because he was in a slot canyon and had no warning of the impending flash flood.

hey! my hubby jumped on :-)

Yes, I can definitely see how people can fall-- especially if the trail is more of a wilderness trail vs. a maintained one...

But the wife must have been totally clueless if she didn't know he had fallen!

It was the North Kaibab trail.

Last week a guy on a river trip got juiced and walked on in and another fellow fell in North Canyon and cracked his head. Rough week.
