Do dogs really only see in black and whi te?View Messages“ ![]() If so, that would el sucko.” 4:13:58 PM 9/24/04 “awesome picture are those ur dogs?” 4:16:28 PM 9/24/04 “Thanks. Yep, that's Heidi and Sierra, my hiking buds.” 4:18:15 PM 9/24/04 “that is awesoem i got germabn shepherd mixes byut they got short hair!!! it is wierd” 4:21:02 PM 9/24/04 “ ![]() Mine are the long-tailed kind. :^D This is Heidi on the shore of Mono Lake and she's a pure bred sweetheart of a German Shep.” 4:27:20 PM 9/24/04 “how u make them in color and the rest in black and whtie?” 4:28:46 PM 9/24/04 “ ![]() how u make them in color and the rest in black and whtie? Oh, that's simple. I just did that real quick in Photoshop by outlining the dogs with the lasso tool and desaturating everything else. Here's the original photo. These scanned dark, I was using a monitor I hadn't used for scanning before so I need to rescan it and lighten it up a bit.” 4:48:51 PM 9/24/04 “Awesome critters and awesome terrain.” 5:25:54 PM 9/24/04 “They are pretty dogs. Actually, I believe dogs can see some colors, and have trouble differentiating between certain colors.” 6:21:02 PM 9/24/04 Thats What The Dogs WANT You To Think “I heard they do. And apparently the darker the shade you are the more they dislike you at first glance.” 6:33:40 PM 9/24/04 “Nice canines there, Buck. Excellent pics, too.” 7:21:48 PM 9/24/04 “cutie pie dogs” 7:25:09 PM 9/24/04 “Thanks! ![]() Here's a shot of my dog Sierra's butt as we climbed up towards Granite Park. ![]() Another shot of them on the same trail. Yes, I take a lot of pics. ha ha! ![]() Heidi chillin' in the shade under my tarp. They make the greatest hiking partners. Well, maybe Carmen Electra might be nice now and then too, but still, my dogs are great on and off the trail as we explore wild areas.” 7:33:39 PM 9/24/04 “Can't wait 'til my knee is better and my Dog is old enough to go. It's gonna rule. I'm envious.” 7:36:42 PM 9/24/04 “the butt shot is best” 7:41:59 PM 9/24/04 “ ![]() Every time I see this pic I start to yawn.” 7:54:47 PM 9/24/04 “well now that i read the word yawn, i yawned. it's inevitable.” 7:57:43 PM 9/24/04 “YAWN” 8:12:27 PM 9/24/04 “Those are great pictures. I love that amber color in the pics. In some it's on the dogs, and in the one it's in the feild color. My Chihuahua is a tricolor, so she is mostly black, and Chihuahuas love to bask in the sun. It's actually a trait they have. If the smalletst beam of light comes in my window and hits the floor, my dog, Capri, will sit in it, but when we are outside and she gets too hot, she will go in the shade.” 9:24:16 PM 9/24/04 “If biology 101 serves... the eyes have two distinct cell types - sickles and cones. one type detects color, the other b&w (light?). Nocturnal animals have a disproportionate number of the b&whities. Though this makes them essentially color blind, it gives them excellent vision in low light conditions. Dogs fall under this catagory. Hear tell it, recent research seems to determine that dogs can, indeed, detect a lil' color. Having Belle along while night hiking is great. She follows the trail, and I follow her glowish stinky yeller butt...” 9:29:01 PM 9/24/04 “Buck - You've inspired me. To do what? I don't know. But I'm sure it's good. I like your webpage also. Hope you don't mind but I'm going to try painting some of your pics. (personal use) Keep up the great work.” 10:25:01 PM 9/24/04 “those deogs are awesome i like all the pictures thanks for posting them buck” 11:47:57 PM 9/24/04 “hehehe Scorchy likes doggy butt!” 8:02:43 AM 9/25/04 “How can you tell one dog's butt from the other? Scorch Butt, ha ha ha!” 8:58:37 AM 9/25/04 “oh my...I forgot about those sierra wildflower gardens.... so pretty and so many blooming at once :D Nice picks. I too like that butt pic.” 9:21:15 AM 9/25/04 “Beautiful pictures of your precious doggies Heidi & Sierra! Buck, may I ask where you are at in the thrird photo? with Heidi & Sierra on the trail...those wildflowers along the trail are really something. Seems like the dogs eye anatomy would be like humans..I don't know, I have always wondered that myself and have heard different stories.” 11:15:58 AM 9/25/04 “Great pics Buck, and kewl dogs too.” 3:55:10 PM 9/25/04 “next summer i am moving out and gettin my huskies!!!! Hopefully the pound has husky mixes cause i am not gonna buy a dog when i could rescue one from the "h3ll" called the pound!!” 4:34:50 PM 9/25/04 “wow broken, just whan I thought you were a total dork you have to say something like that...stop it or I might start liking you ! :O” 9:06:31 PM 9/25/04 “Had a german shepherd once named Amy. Had to shoot her , got into my barn and began killing livestock.Even chained her, that night she jumped through a barn window to keep her killing up.Didn`t want to but had no choice, she`s not the first dog I`ve shot unfortunately.Dogs just seem hell bent on killing things.People gotta learn to keep their dogs at home and not let`em run, they can sure chew up live stock.” 10:13:17 PM 9/25/04 “ime and my siter and bro-inlaw already rescued some dogies this year so far i have been part of 3 rescues and i like all the doggies!!! Helped train a rescue dog and then sent them on to a family!!! But my bro and sisters dogs are my nieces so i gotta spoil them and not yell at them :)” 4:05:30 PM 9/26/04 “I shot some porcuipines that were quillin' my dogs when I lived in the boonies.” 4:10:32 PM 9/26/04 “Thanks! madeintahoe, the shot of my dogs on the trail is going up the Mono Pass trail from the Mosquito Flat trailhead (Rock Creek). This section was about halfway between the trailhead and Ruby Lake. Flowers lined the trail the entire way, it was awesome! Thanks again.” 7:25:53 PM 9/26/04 “what kind of packs did u get for them buck??” 11:40:02 PM 9/26/04 “My favorite doggy packs (and I've tried quite a few) are from a company called Wolf Packs®. I order them online. These packs are el heavy-o duty-o to the maxo. I've had previous packs that were easily shredded as we bushwhacked. I get their Bonzai model, which is super duper flipper dipper heavy duty.” 10:53:45 AM 9/27/04 “Thanks Buck We did not have the wildflowers like that when we did the Pioneer Basin trip along that section of trail..looks like they were at peak when you were there. The poster who felt the need to shot the dog Amy...is very disturbing to me, I am sick about it.. says I had no choice, what about finding Amy another home where she would be the only animal, why was that not done? Dogs have a right to go and run if they are well trained and will listen to voice command if you need to call them back to you.” 12:44:28 PM 9/27/04 “You're welcome, madeintahoe. As for the dude who shot his dog, you'll find dog-haters here, I just let it go. I think most of them make up stories to try and piss of the dog lovers (apparently lots of people on this forum have been severely mauled multiple times by dogs on trails... ya right) so don't let it disturb you. They're just tryin' to rile things up. 95% of the people I meet on the trail absolutely adore my dogs... they always comment on how beautiful they are and how well-trained they are. Then every once in a while I get someone who tells me to put the little-@#%#@$!s on a leash or leave them home and tell me how they've been badly bitten by nearly every dog they've seen. I just nod and smile and continue on because I know my dogs will bring smiles to the next people we see. I even have people taking photos of my dogs. There's too much happiness in this world to dwell on the few dog haters you'll meet.” 3:11:29 PM 9/27/04 “Amy was shot because she maimed and killed livestock. She was given another chance and attempted to kill again.Where I`m from dogs like that are putdown,if she killed my neighbors livestock and he shot her ,it would be understood.Live stock are peoples livelihood, you can`t have dogs killing anf getting away with it.Domestic dogs kill for sport and leave a damage, obviously you haven`t seen maimed and mutilated cattle or sheep. If fluffy maims a sheep, fluffy gets shot,to chase fluffy away only allows fluffy to come back and do it again. I don`t enjoy killing dogs but I can`t allow them to kill and maim either.” 5:25:41 PM 9/28/04 “paddles, I have no idea how you raise your dogs, but my dogs don't go around killing things. Yes, my dogs have even been on farms and ranches and they don't kill chickens or calves or any livestock. My dogs meet up with horses and llamas often on the trails and we all politely step aside while the horses/llamas pass through, no problems at all. My dogs are around cats and guinea pigs and bunnies and turkeys quite often. If you spend time with your dog(s) (other than having it run around a ranch as just another animal) and train them appropriately, your dogs would have no desire to run around killing things indiscriminately. Dogs are very trainable, but it takes "time" and respect and care for them to reflect your own desires. Most people are more concerned with their dog sniffing butts than they are killing everything they see.” 5:40:46 PM 9/28/04 “If you truly "loved" your dog Amy, you would have given her away to someone who 1)deeply cared for her 2)lives in a non-ranching area. Shooting your own dog (family member) because it attacked a chicken or something because you didn't properly train it, or at least give it away to a family who doesn't have livestock near them, is a sorry reason to shoot something you "love". Which I can only assume means you don't love dogs. I certainly hope you don't get any more dogs while you live where you do. That would be very sad.” 5:46:02 PM 9/28/04 “Pssst... madeintahoe, paddles is just trolling and I'm pretending to bite. ha ha!” 5:48:27 PM 9/28/04 “Hi Buck! Well..I do have to ask paddles if he really believes all domestic dogs kill for sport..that is just so ridicules..and to make a statement like that is really upsetting to read!!!! And yes...why did paddles not find Amy a home without any other animals..I even asked in my reply. Sorry for posting again, but had to.” 11:24:19 PM 9/28/04 “my aunts dog was a stray for 2 years and it kills and eats all rodents but it doesnt mess with the chickens but it does herd the horses around except for the mustang she learned her lesson with him!!!” 11:54:01 PM 9/28/04 “hey Buck i just checked out the site!! Man why dont u post your opinioons aobut the abcks and the pictures of ur dogs like other peoepl did show ur dogs off man they totally rock!!!” 11:58:49 PM 9/28/04 “madeintahoe, don't be upset. This person must be a troll (lying person). If a person felt that dogs kill livestock, they would not get another dog like this person did. No one kills their dog, they give it away to someone else or a shelter or fix the problem of the dog getting into the chickens with fencing. The person is full of chicken poop!” 4:22:48 PM 9/29/04 “Guys I`ve had plenty of dogs,Amy was the first to kill.I did not raise her from a pup,I got her from a shelter. She was well traine d but once she got a taste of blood, that was it.Giving her away to someone else, doesn`t guarantee she won`t kill again. Most livestock are killed by town dogs. Please don`t tell me that farm dogs that are good around their masters animals are good around others,I`ve known sheep dogs that herd and protect their masters flock, but run and kill sheep at the next farm. The day Amy was put down was the day she jumped through the barn window and chewed the legs off a number of rabbits....I guess they don`t have rights,Not only did I have to put Amy down but I had a number of suffering rabbits to put down.Amy was a animal no different then my sheep, or any other live stock..I offer no apologizes,It was the way I was raised. My animals are not mistreated,if any thing I`m known for the xtra care I give them, but I can`t have a dog that kills. My current dog is also a a dog from a shelter, however I raised him from a pup,he has never made an attempt to kill or harm any animal on my farm or anyone elses. However if he ever does he will be putdown, where I come from it is expected, because of the risk of him doing it again.Out of curiosity what about the animals Amy killed, aren`t they important to ...or is it just dogs that are important?” 4:42:25 PM 9/29/04 “Amy was a animal no different then my sheep, or any other live stock..I offer no apologizes,It was the way I was raised Your dog Amy was an animal NO different than your sheep or any other livestock? Yikes! Remind me not to ever go to your place for dinner! "Honey, can you pass me some more Amy cacciatore?"” 5:04:32 PM 9/29/04 “paddles, regarding the animals that Amy killed... who's responsibility is it to have a properly trained farm-friendly dog?” 5:05:59 PM 9/29/04 “You can bring your pups over to my place any time Buck. They can run around with my Shepard.” 5:06:45 PM 9/29/04 “Lipstick Hiker: Have you ever lived in the country? There are many dogs that are taken for walks to the woods and put down ,because of killing livestock,no one enjoys it but you can`t have a dog that kills things.Once a dog gets a taste for chickens, sheep,etc.. they don`t stop.Livestock are the livelihood of many people, you can`t have your dog destroying your neighbors livestock. When dopgs worry sheep, they cause abortions, often the ewes unborn lamb will mummify in the ewe if she`s frightened enough.Dogs rip tear and kill or maim as many as they can..and they come back. I`ve had a neighbor lose a a horse to dogs...these were town dogs.Every year farmers lose thousands of dollars to dogs.Your great loveable dog can become a indiscriminate killer when he runs with a crowd. My father in law has put down two dogs not because he wanted to,but because even though they never harmed his livestock, they did wander off and kill a neighbors. He leashed one of them up and it broke its chain and ran to the neighbors and killed again,at that point he had no choice ,he was not being cruel ,he was being practical. The dogs on this thread are beautiful, but they are still only dogs, just as a cat is only a cat,or a sheep is a sheep.I have never understood how people can treat them like humans or call them my children.Yes my dog is a great companion..I love taking him in the truck with me,watching him run at the waves at the beach...but he is still a dog ,a animal. If he killed a neighbors cow, sheep, horse etc..I would not hesitate to put him down. You can call me a troll and many other things...but that won`t effect how I feel. I also know that my neighbors will shoot him if he is found worrying their stock. It is just common knowledge where I live. Lipstick hiker by the way most dogs dig under chicken wire to get at chickens.” 5:10:12 PM 9/29/04
