Oak Mtn family car camping (AL) - TRView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 10 of 10 messages posted.
“This past Sat we loaded up after the kids finished their nap on Sat and hit the road for Oak Mtn. We got there about 5, setup camp, and had just enough time to eat and get firewood gathered before dark. For supper we had stopped by a Johnny Ray's BBQ and picked up a pound of meat, some sauce, and 3 pieces of pie. Burning marshmallows was a big hit around the fire. Sat morning the big event was for the kids to jump off the short retaining wall and let me catch them. I'd also turn around and let them jump on my back. They'd yell "Giddyup" and I'd trot around camp. We ate, broke camp, and headed over to the lake. This was the 2nd time we'd canoed with the kids and they seemed to really enjoy it. There are 2 bridges you can paddle under at the picnic area. After paddling we checked out the treetop trail. This is an elevated walkway about 20' in the air and maybe 100 yards long. Every 10 yards or so you come to these enormous cages that houses birds that have been injured but can not be rehab'd enough to return to the wild. Lunch was at the picnic area where we heated up the remnants of the bbq on my hiking stove. Funny how my hiking gear is alot cooler now that we use it for our trips. Headlights fall under this same category. Oak Mtn has a model farm that's a big hit with kids. They have horses, donkeys (I always hear Mike Myers voice when I say that), goats, ducks, geese, peacocks, pigs, bunnies, chickens, sheep, and probably more. It's a hands-on type of zoo. All in all, we had a great time. pictures” 6:56:03 PM 9/27/04 “Sounds like you had a good time. Enjoy them now, dayhiker, all too soon all they're interested in is their Gameboy.” 7:34:15 PM 9/27/04 “A statement hit me while at the farm. A few weeks ago in church a heard a video talking about focusing on now. Not the past and not the future. The main statement that was emphasized was, "These are the good old days." While walking over to see the horses and seeing the three of them trudge ahead that statement really hit me. I just kept thinking that days like that day really are the good old days.” 5:56:49 AM 9/28/04 “yupp, sure sounds like you and family had lots of fun.” 6:50:43 AM 9/28/04 “horses and donkeys? cool!!! looks like fun.” 7:45:20 AM 9/28/04 “The pic with the kids asleep in the back seat is hilarious ! I took my kids to Six Flags over GA last Saturday...of course they were snoring all the way home, 3.5hrs, and I was VERY tired and left to do the driving. AAaaarrrggghhhh !!!” 8:56:02 AM 9/28/04 “MDS, we also have one of them after we pulled in the garage. I felt like they looked.” 9:45:25 AM 9/28/04 “"these are the good old days" - that's something I need to remember more often. The past seems so great in retrospect and the future is bright, but today is all a person really has.” 10:26:24 AM 9/28/04 “Yeah, that was really the point of the talk I heard and it struck a chord. We can get so focused on what did happen and what we hope to happen that we don't pay attention to what IS happening. Life is what happens when we're busy making other plans. (paraphrased) John Lennon” 10:36:36 AM 9/28/04 “I love mountain biking at Oak Mtn >:) One of the best mountain biking spots in the SE IMHO... and I've just abour ridden all of em.” 12:10:39 PM 9/28/04
