That's Hot!: Mammoth Cave Trip ReportView MessagesViewing posts 1 to 15 of 15 messages posted.
“It's not all complete yet, but I have a link for pictures. I should be able to finish tonight. The last time we tried this trip, SloppyJoe and I got rained out. Looking at the weather a few days before the trip started, everything looked great except for the temps. Day time temperatures were elevating every day. When I checked before we left on Thursday, Fridays high was being predicted at 87 degrees. STICKY! I heard from Joe on Wednesday night. He advised that he will not be able to make it due to the passing of his girlfriends mother. I am sorry I did not call you back Joe. I got your voice mail, but no number registered and I left your number at work. My thoughts were with you guys this weekend! My cousin Mark and I got started off a little late on Thursday. We arrived a little after 6 on Thursday and set up for the evening. The Corona flowed and the fire was hot. Morning came faster than we had hoped so we packed up and drove over to the visitors center to meet up with those attending. We waited from 9 until about 10:15 and no one showed. Oh well, no big deal. We make our way over to the ferry crossing and wait for it to take one car from our side to the opposite side and return. The ferry returns and lowers the entrance ramp for us to enter. As we pull up the ferry man asks us if we saw the sign back before we drove up. I said, “No, I am sorry, I must have missed it. Is everything O.K?” He adds that if I would have seen it, it read stop at this point and wait for the ferry to stop. I must have been a whole 5 feet past this sign when he pulled up. I wasn’t going to argue with the putz. I apologized and said it will never happen again. We arrived at Good Springs Trailhead a short time after our little run in with Mr. Poopy Pants Ferry Boat Driver. The cool in the air is slowly being replaced by the days expected heat as we saddle up. We hike a couple of miles and decide to take a short break near where we step onto a side trail, free from horses. It must have been a dry summer, because numerous stream crossings had dried out to nothing. We made our way to our campsite at Sal Hollow for the night and hopefully a few other hikers. We arrive and find a campsite in shambles. http://community.webshots.com/album/192376562rBWruw” 9:01:37 AM 9/28/04 9:08:32 AM 9/28/04 “Thanks ski!” 9:10:11 AM 9/28/04 “No pics of the shambly campsite?” 9:10:12 AM 9/28/04 “We should try again sometime when the weather is cooler.” 9:13:39 AM 9/28/04 “Nothing ruins a perfectly good fall like an indian summer. :(” 9:15:27 AM 9/28/04 I've had dealings with the... “poopy pants ferry operators...report them! jerkoffs have no right dealing with the public. Great report...I really like Mammoth. I hope to get back there this year and do more trekking.” 9:41:13 AM 9/28/04 “Mr. Poopy Pants?!?!? That made me laugh out loud. Can't wait to read the rest of your report.” 4:44:13 PM 9/28/04 “OMG...hahaha...LOL..... Mr. Poopy Pants Ferry Boat Driver.......omg..........” 5:06:22 PM 9/28/04 “so much easier to read the reports with the spaces in between. At least for an old woman like me. :) Thanks! And thanks for the pics too.” 9:54:51 PM 9/28/04 “"Nothing ruins a perfectly good fall like an indian summer. :(" "indian summer and i hate the heat. i got a backstreet lover in the passenger seat. i got my hand in my pocket, so determined, discreet, i pray... once upon a time, i could control myself... once upon a time... i could lose myself.."” 10:47:08 PM 9/28/04 “My pleasure everybody! I did not get a chace to write last night (I promise I will finish it tonight) It took me awhile to hang a print I picked up in Vegas a year ago. Sweet photo of Denali in the background, a moose drinking from a lake in the foreground.” 8:54:07 AM 9/29/04 “Glad yall had a good time. I decided not to go since I had to be back on Saturday afternoon. I definately want to do this though at some point since I am so close!” 10:35:35 AM 9/29/04 “Great trails once you get off the horse paths. A better time to go would be in the spring when the creeks are filled and not bone dry.” 10:39:23 AM 9/29/04 “Ah, if only my allergies would allow me to hike in the springtime....” 10:44:10 AM 9/29/04
