“OAKLAND // It was a school morning, but Sierra Stiles wasn't gathering her books. Instead, in the pre-dawn blackness, the 8-year-old pulled on a camouflage shirt, pants and boots, and grabbed a high-powered hunting rifle.

The third-grader from Western Maryland had beaten out 1,992 applicants - mostly men - to be selected through a state lottery as one of only 200 to obtain hunting licenses for Maryland's second black bear hunt in a half-century.

Hiding with her father behind trees on her family's farm, Sierra used a .243-caliber rifle to shoot a 211-pound male black bear yesterday morning, the first kill of the season, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. In the end, the youngest and smallest hunter also proved to be the quickest to claim a trophy.

"I'm so proud of her," said Robert Harvey, 65, her great-uncle, who owns the farm in Kitzmiller where the bear was shot. "It's good to get these kids outside, so they can really learn."

Sierra's bear, which she plans to turn into a rug, was one of 13 to be registered with game officers yesterday at the Mount Nebo Wildlife Management Area just north of Oakland, with two others weighed-in at a state office in Frostburg.

“My Dad bought my first gun for me when I turned 12. It was a kid's sized 20 gauge single shot shotgun. Still have it. Dang thing kicks like a mule because it's so light. I never could hit anything worth a dang with it because I would close my eyes as I pulled the trigger, waiting for the shock of the recoil. The he11 with whatever I was aiming at.
At 14-15, I finally killed a deer, so I felt I had proven my manhood and I pretty much quit hunting.”

Me too, and some of them are my beloved relations. ;-)

My dang oldest nephew is dangerous in the woods with a gun. Dang kid would shoot at noise.

Because my family hunts near our family home, and a four wheeler is available to carry it out. No need to lighten it up, plus who likes to hunt around rotten deer guts?

I've never tried it, but it didn't matter with this deer, the heart was in about 100 pieces.”

“All the hunters in a hunt divide up the kills around here.
Only the solo hunts not on leased hunting lands get the whole kill.

Most of the time the hunters will get their meat allready ready for the freezer, wrapped and all.

Y'all are making me hungry for some deer cooked by my Mama!”

Didn't think of that, but I'm not an active hunter anymore.

Most of the land is owned by big paper companies here, twig. They will set up areas, usually by hundred acre blocks, and accept bids from hunting clubs for hunting rights. The clubs exist to pool money from 20-30 hunters to lease the land.”

“You're supposed to be careful where you shoot your moose so you can get it out, by 4 wheeler and come along usually. Most dead moose I see are still whole on the trailer. Because of the time of year that moose are shot they have to be processed quickly.
We have plenty of paper company land as well, but I never heard of what you're talking about Stovie. Plus we have state owned game preserves and private land to hunt on.”
