LOL. Who needs to go to the gym when you have the GSMNP?

"The Koi fish is one of the most unusual fish in the world. It is a docile fish and will swim to you for feeding or stroking."

Those carp are beautiful, treebait.

Ok, on topic.

I'm going running today for lunch. I'm going to check out the path in the park next to my work:

Wish it were sunny out, like the picture. : (
The view is almost the same as from the window my cube is on. Ahhh, my new job is great.

The run was great! And I got to pet doggies. That's one of my favorite things about going to parks. I can't have a doggy of my own, so I live vicariously through others. And the office gym showers were pretty nice.

Hey, pixaxe killer, we were on topic. Treebait was exercising by digging (Most gyms do not have facilities for that exercise!) and I'm busy backpacking in GSMNP, my gym, between car repairs.

Digging is not an easy exercise. Mountain backpacking gives much greater workouts than anyone ever does in a formal gym. And a shower! What is that? I think that's off topic!

I went off topic tho. Talking about koi.

And technically, this thread is about going to the gym and exercising, not working physically or backpacking. There are some folks who frequent it who encourage eachother in exercising (as in working out for health benefits.) I was just reporting in.

But whatever.

You're correct. I view the gym as a place to exercise. This can include exercises alone, with weights, swimming, martial arts, racketball, etc. Some people will go outside for longer distance running and return for the other facilities. I wonder if I can somehow include the snack bar, which has fruit, coffee, other drinks, snacks and lunches. Food for thought!

ahem . . .its not about the gym. Its about the shower.

Your chatting her up about the GSMNP and digging Koi ponds really doesn't get either of us closer to seeing her "post" workout . ..if you follow me.

Geeez...its pretty hard to maintain a subtle fascade around this place.

Sorry, Lee. I'm kinda of old and phased out! However, I did come upon a nice shower at campsite 71 recently. It would be nice to see her use it. You'll have to wait for my trip report to see the picture. (Reporting will start in about a month after I return home. Most of it will be pictures.)

since I moved I haven't been to the gym. It was on the other side of town which was inconvenient. I just found out they did terminate my contract with them due to the distance. It only took two certified letters and one month to do it though. I will go back to the gym where I first started at but will also look at the new Golds Gym.

Anyone use Golds Gym..Pros and cons please

i recently joined a brand new gold's gym in my neighborhood. it's really nice. they have a huge cardio cinema. the cardio equipment outside of teh cinema all has it's own tv monitor mounted to the front with cable, a remote, and place to plug your headphones in.
they're really well-equipped to handle the crowd also. they had 2 sets of dumbells from 5-150 and just added a whole new set because it was starting to get kind of tight in there.
my only complaint is that they don't have an adjustable decline bench. i have to use the decline bench to do decline situps and i like a really sharp angle which it doesn't provide.
other than that, i've never had a problem getting a cardio machine i wanted, even at 5:30 in the afternoon. bathrooms are always clean. actually they have a couple guys walking around just looking for something to clean.
there are plenty of squat racks. nice line of hammerstrength machines. the nautilus is crap but all of that kind of stuff is, imo.

I looked at Gold's Gym and decided against it. I rejoined the gym I went to for a couple of yrs. The old gym is the same money as Gold's but it has a pool, sauna, whirlpool and a indoor track. So I am getting more bang out of the buck. One thing Gold's had more of and that was TV's and spin bikes

I have been holding my treadmill at 7.0 mph / 65 mins for over a month now. I've met and been maintaining my weight goal (167#) for 120 days now. I'm stressing my right ankle just a little much for my taste, so I think I'll start dialling back the speed gradually.

My woman just found out that although her skeleton is still in pretty good shape, she really needs to lose about 120#, and she says she'll be joining me on the treadmill. She hopes to join me on a hike in a year or so, I am so hopeful at that news, we'll see how her program progresses.

reporting in from a long time off the...
board, but not off the workout. Actually, its expanded quite a bit. I currently ride 4 days a week, minimum 10 miles a day.I hope to get that up to 5 days a week at 15 miles a clip. I am now doing 30 minutes of yoga every day in the morning before work and an hour at night before bed, meditation is a component twice a day every day for 30 minutes each sitting. roller blade 3 miles 3 times a week. backpack the weekends. I've gotten away from the weights, except for toning, the yoga is intense and is THE thing for strength training. Weights will kill the joints and torque the muscles, Yoga builds strength, control, balance, healthy mind, healthy body, and tighten everything up in the most beneficial way. Been on yoga now 2 months and am already doing advanced poses. I can see doing this the rest of my life. I'll be starting up Thai Chi again right after the first of the year.

Heading back to the gym today for the first time since, let's see... 9/22. Wow, that's almost 8 weeks! I've had some tendonitis in my right shoulder, so haven't been able to do much of anything. "The patch" (mentioned on some other thread) worked really well on it, but maybe the main thing is getting myself to stop raising my arm up over my head while sleeping.

Anywho, my chiro said I could start back with the weights this week. Well, technically, I can do the machines, but without putting any weight on them. I'm going to look like an idiot! I can just see it... "Dude, you might want to put some weight on that thing - those muscles aren't going to get any bigger or stronger doing that...."

Diary of a Training Workout
Dear Diary:

For my fortieth birthday this year, my wife (the dear) purchased a
week of personal training at the local health club for me. Although I am still in great shape since playing football 20 yrs ago, I decided it would be a good idea to go ahead and give it a try. Called the club and made my reservation with a personal trainer named Vanessa, who identified herself as a 26 yr. old aerobics instructor and model for athletic clothing and swimwear.

My wife seemed pleased with my enthusiasm to get started! The club
encouraged me to keep a diary to chart my progress

MONDAY: Started my day at 6:00am. Tough to get out of bed, but it
was well worth it when I arrived at the health club to find Vanessa waiting for me.
She was something of a Greek goddess with blonde hair, dancing eyes
and a dazzling white smile. Woo Hoo!!!!! Vanessa gave me a tour and
showed me the machines. She took my pulse after 5 minutes on the treadmill. She was alarmed that my pulse was so fast, but I attributed it to standing next to her in her Lycra aerobics outfit.
I enjoyed watching the skillful way in which she conducted her
aerobics class after my workout today. Very inspiring, Vanessa was
encouraging as I did my sit-ups, although my gut was already aching from holding it in the whole time she was around. This is going to be a FANTASTIC week!!

TUESDAY: I drank a whole pot of coffee, but I finally made it out
of the door. Vanessa made me lie on my back and push a heavy iron bar into the air, and then she put weights on it! My legs were a little wobbly on the treadmill, but I made the full mile. Vanessa's rewarding smile made it all worthwhile. I feel GREAT!! It's a whole new life for me.

WEDNESDAY: The only way I can brush my teeth is by laying on the
toothbrush on the counter and moving my mouth back and forth over it. I
believe I have a hernia in both pectorals. Driving was OK as long as I didn't try to steer or stop. I parked on top of a GEO in the club parking lot. Vanessa was impatient with me, insisting that my screams bothered other club members.
Her voice is a little too perky for early in the morning and when
she scolds, she gets this nasally whine that is VERY annoying. My chest
hurts when I got on the treadmill, so Vanessa put me on the stair
monster. Why the hell would anyone invent a machine to simulate an activity rendered
obsolete by elevators? Vanessa told me it would help me get in shape and enjoylife. She said some other #&%!$ too.

THURSDAY: Vanessa was waiting for me with her vampire-like teeth
exposed as her thin, cruel lips were pulled back in a full snarl. I couldn't help being a half an hour late; it took me that long to tie
my shoes. Vanessa took me to work out with dumbbells. When she was
not looking, I ran and hid in the men's room. She sent Lars to find me,
then, as punishment, put me on the rowing machine ? which I sank.

FRIDAY: I hate that #&%!$ Vanessa more than any human being has
ever hated any other human being in the history of the world. Stupid, skinny, anemic little cheerleader. If there were a part of my body I could move without unbearable pain, I would beat her with it. Vanessa wanted me to work on my triceps I don't have any triceps! And if you don't want dents in the floor, don't hand me the F*C**NG Barbells or anything that weighs more than a sandwich. The treadmill flung me off and I landed on a health and nutrition teacher. Why couldn't it have been someone softer, like the drama coach or the choir director?

SATURDAY: Vanessa left a message on my answering machine in her
grating, shrilly voice wondering why I did not show up today. Just hearing her made me want to smash the machine with my planner. However, I lacked the strength to even use the TV remote and ended up catching eleven straight hours of the Weather Channel.

SUNDAY: I'm having the Church van pick me up for services today so
I can go and thank GOD that this week is over. I will also pray that next year, my wife (the #&%!$), will choose a gift for me that is fun--like a root canal or a vasectomy.
