Thanks NS!!
Great if short workout. Have to withe Kamper to the OB/GYN in an hour.
My goal is to lose 5 lbs this month.
5-7 lbs in Feburary, and another 5-7 in March. The restaurant where I work now is rustic French & Italian. Lots of fat butter & oil. We tend to eat around 10 pm or later then have a couple of beers across the street at our local bar. That has played hell with my metabolism.
With a little one on the way, I'm determined to get in shape.

Have any of you tried those "Expresso" bikes at the gym, the ones with the screen. You basically follow along a virtual route through the mountains, redwood forest, the moon or whatever. Kind of a like a Wii, but on a stationary bike.

The bike automatically adjusts tension for the hills, but you have to steer and shift gears. There are other virtual riders that you try to keep up with or pass. I was really surprised at how hard this was and what a great workout I got.

When the days get longer, I will start riding on a real road again, but these bikes are a good substitute in the meantime.

No problem. Don't do them. There are plenty of other exercises that you can do. Go backpacking.

NS is right, you don't need squats. They aren't good for you. There is a recumbent machine that doesn't tear you up as much. Try that.

I wonder if there is a virtual bar for when it's too cold to go out?

the knee is better. I have some painful flair ups from time to time. Squats were with very little weight (less than 100lbs). More range of motion work than anything.

back at the gym, putting in hours on the bike trainer in my dining room.

Training for a 500 mile bike trip and this season's races.

It's good to be BACK!

squats
Knees and back notwithstanding .. ..squats are one of the single best whole body exercises you can do.

If my lifting regime was taken away, the last thing I would want to go is squats.

having said that . .. .they scare the poop out of me. Because of knee and back.

I squat about 110 - 120% of my body weight.

I am carefull.

There are other, non-weighted squat like things you can do . . .but they are hard to vizualize.

One involves a box step (3 cycles of 15 each leg) for muscle endurance. The other is a single leg squat (lower slowly, one foot on a box) with or with out a medicine ball.

becuase you are not slinging around a 45lb bar with another 175 lbs on it, you are less vulnerable. But they are less efficient b/c its on eleg at a time.

Our Aikijutsu is now a subset of Jujutsu, which has a few more things in it. This evening at class I got to help a newbie. He is an instructer in Tae Kwon Do. He is a real nice guy and will do well. But in doing side and back falls, he kept landing on his elbows. This I tried to correct. It may be OK on the mats, but elbows are easily broken, especially on hard floors, in the streets and on sidewwlks. Falling techniques are taught in Tae Kwon Do!

Initially, he did good doing some weapon work with the class. After practicing the falls, he enjoyed throwing others following his introduction to Kote gaeshi, a hand lock and twist, which will cause a person to go down, and Irimi nage, an Aikido throwing technique. There was a little trouble getting him to puil the other person's arm properly. It is needed to place the person a little off-balance so that the technique will work easily.

Actually, I did not work out this evening. Most of the time I just watched other members of the class. The pretty girls get most of my attention. Just prior to class I had to take my ex- over to a beachside place. She was giving a presentation of some Panamanian property for sale,

He shouldn't have been allowed to teach tkd. Remember, tkd is NOT designed to be a street style. It's formulated for point fighting in a ring. Punching techniques are designed to minimize damage.

I believe one can teach after they complete the required prerequisites. Perhaps the problem, if there is one, started further back. This man had a great attitude and plenty of enthusiasm.

I just mean that learning to fall correctly, specifically not on your elbows, is one of the first and most basic things in tkd. The other school shouldn't advance somebody who can't do a white belt technique to a teaching level. Of course, I'm only going by the brief description of his falling technique.

hired a personal trainer today. I've kown the guy for several years. He is profesional MMA fighter and part time bouncer at the pub I used to manage. He finally got his personal training certificate and I'll be his first client. I'm pretty excited since I seem to have lost my motivation over the last few months.

Two weeks into this new workout and I'm already feelin the benefits. My endurance is up and I've put on a couple of pounds of muscle. I sleep better and eat better. I smoked my workout to the point my trainer is bumpin up my citcuits and reducing my rest time. I've still got a bit of an endorphin buzz goin on.

Last Saturday some of our Martial Arts Group met for five hours including an hour lunch break. It was to practice some advanced techniques. I did not do much but learned a lot from observation.

Near the end the instructor passed out magic markers with washable colors. These were used as knives, when he turned the classmates loose. Again, I just watched. Some of them received a lot of color on their clothes, hands and faces. The experiment showed that many of us need a lot more practice in protecting themselves. Everyone enjoyed the exercise.

That evening we gathered at the instructor's home for a barbarque and swim party to complete a wonderful day.

A few weeks ago I returned to the pool and swam 100 yards. I felt so good with it, I swam a second 100 yards. Then last Friday I returned and swam 500 yards. It will take me a while to return to multiple miles, but I'm not in any hurry. And the steam baths sure do feel wonderful each time I go.

divinity - I didn't swim far. It takes me a while to build up to any great distance. And on the above swims I had to leave the pool because of closing time and this morning beacuse of the start of a class. But it feels good to be doing it again.

There were 14 cheerful, bouncing, old women and one old guy in the pool this morning, when I left.
