In the morning, I roll out of bed...
and do a 15 minute set of calistenics...toe touches, windmills, juming jacks..etc 10 of each item, there are 8 items that I do...then hit the shower. Once home and before dinner, I do the same routine, extending it to 20 reps on each item, then I move into whatever I want to do that night, dumbells, universal machine, cardio, piate ball. I usually do 2-3 hours of something every night. This week not, cause of the throat, but tonight, I'm gonna hit it again, if I can stay awake, haven't slept a full night since friday, and I want to be tired. but, I also gotta start pulling out bags and restock and pack em up for the big trip, so, maybe small workout, just to keep the tone.

You all are doing great!

Just came back from the gym and doing the latest (and last?) alteration to my pre-AT training program. One hour climbing up and down the stairs with pack, 200 crunches, 4 miles at 8% elevation on the treadmill with pack. I don't think I'll increase this for awhile, and then only in 5 minute increments.

Sounds good. Is there a way to do a decline anywhere? You don't want to neglect your calves as well as that whole downhill motion. How much in your pack?

Well, its much later than I planned to be going, but I am headed to the gym right now. Hopefully there's a cardio machine waiting for me there. If not, I'll jump on the track upstairs. I'm actulally excited about going to the gym! Weird!

Pack weighs about 25 lbs, perhaps a pound or two less than what I'll start the trip with. Not certain what you mean by decline. Are you talking about decline as in a decline bench, or something specific to calves. If you're talking decline as in downhill, I have to go down the bleachers too. Calves were barely sore yesterday. Perhaps a little more so tomorrow since I added 20 minutes to the bleacher routine.

you got it. I was talking about the downhill aspect. I'm always in worse shape after a long descent.
Currahee

descending
is the only time my bad knees like to act up. It's tough on the joints.

I figure the bleacher work out should help me achieve 3 positive results at a minimum: increase ankle strength, minimize liklihood of shinsplints on the early part of the hike, improve balance and there's still all that serendipitous cardiovascular stuff. I wish I'd thought of it earlier.

Curahee, the treadmill at my gymn has a 5% decline setting which is nice. I wish it would go steeper though

Trip Report
Okay, so it had been exactly one week since I had last worked out. Hit the gym last night, and really impressed myself!

Rode 2 miles on the bike
Ran 1.25 miles
Elliptical 1 mile

Last time I ran, I barely got through 4 laps (less than 1/2 mile) around the track. Guess my body was ready to release some energy!!

HOpefully I can get back there on Friday. :)

Glad you all brought the thread back up. I need to get back in gear. I've been moving and have felt sick since Mexico and haven't worked out for well over a week. But now things have settled down. It's time.

I'm a little suspicious of the "pounds" marked on the weights of the weight machines, since I do 165 "pounds" on the "dips" machine, yet I weigh less than 160. Maybe physics doesn't apply there....
BowlderMan

Physics are manipulateda bit . When you use the machines, you don't have to use your stabilizer muscles for balance. Also you work out often and can prolly "dip" or press more than your body weight.

I'm absolutely smoked today. After the gym I had to go to work and it was busy all night (I made $400.00, not too shabby). I was bartending by myself so that kept me running. I guess I didn't drink enough water or eat enough to prevent muscle soreness. My chest, back and legs are done in. I'm giving myself the day off to recover. Tylenol will be on the menu.

after being lazy for a while, i've been back into it. keeping on track since i now have my gym in my extra room. getting back to where i was as far as how much im lifting but i got a ways to go for how much i weigh.
i got a pretty cool polar heart rate monitor for christmas. it tells heartrate, calories burned, and how much % of fat of those calories. can't tell how accurate it is just yet.

tonight I get back to the machine...
I;ve been off for near 4 weeks. throat and then vacation...the great thing about coming off a big trip though is that the trip itself is a monster workout and worked my body to its fullest, so now I'm already one notch up on the workout ladder and am ready to build on top of that until the next big trip.

Each backpacking trip should hurtle you to the next level. By the time its canoeing season again, I should be able to toss the new boat (the Drowning Witch) with no difficulty.

It was really great being able to sport a 45lb pack up into the Chisos high cliffs with no difficulty and no fatigue for 4 days. The legs felt GREAT and the back never gave me any difficulty. I never felt like I was struggling and it was a great trek!

I've been busy moving and have been super busy otherwise. I've got to get back on track.
I first need to figure out the 24 Hour Fit near my new place. It's downtown-ish Seattle, conveniently near the REI Flagship store, I might add. I have no idea what the parking situation is, etc.
But I am definitely going to do a run around Greenlake, if not tonight, then for sure tomorrow.

work out at home...
no lines, no wait, no crappy music.

I crank the tunes to my liking and make the walls move. Gyms are great for socializing and body watching, but since I'm celebate (not by choice), going to my local gym has no appeal...

nowslimmer, there are other ways of working out without going to the gym. I take my CD player and go for a hike at the lake. If the weather is nice tomorrow I am going for a bike ride. I might hit the gym just to sit in the steam room to help unclog my lungs from this dang congestion. There are also indoor activities for us not celebate

My fiance just bought us a nice membership to our local fitness center. It's in an old mill built by Henry Ford. It's got this cool waterwheel and gigantic internal gears that I put my towel on while on the treadmill. So, for the first time in my life, I've been going to the gym.

The great thing is that since I've gotten rid of cable TV at home, the gym now gives me a chance to watch television again. They put FoxNews on and I just run fast with rage. I'm thinking of exercising at 7PM every night so I can watch Chris Matthews.

And every time I drive past the McDonald's and feel tempted to go in I just tell myself to fight the multinationals and keep the money in my pocket. It seems to be working.
