CO Springs backpacking

“What would be a good trail for an overnighter in the Colorado Springs area?

It'll probably be in the summer, there will be 5 or 6 of us, and as far as I know, only 1 has backpacked before, and that's been a LONG time.

Also, I read that on your first trip you should plan on only about 5 miles a day, is that reasonable?

“that mileage would be fine, but it depends on terrain and steepness of the ups and downs.”

“get started hiking...Mueller State Park is in that vacinity. There is also a great trail that takes you up to the Crags. You can camp along the Crags trail. There is a stream that you can get water from and great bouldering that is available. From the crags, you have spectacular views of the back side of Pikes Peak.

If your new to backpacking, and heading to Colorado, I'd play it conservative...none of us wants to read about some newbies who got 86'd on the trail.”

How would Buffalo Peak be for a start?”

“whereever you go make sure you read the guide books, maps and even talk to the local FS Rangers or other on the ground resource to know what the conditions out there are. Especially since your taking a bunch of newbies out, a little knowledge can go a long way.”
